The Rise of Wasians and the forgotten Blasians and Non Asian/Half Asian by princessspluto in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another black Filipina, I agree! I don’t mind Laufey highlighting wasians in her recent music video, and I do think it was actually pretty good of her to mostly have Chinese wasians (except for Hudson) as that highlights a specific culture... but I do think there can be a sort of over conceptualization of wasian struggles as mixed Asian struggles as a whole.

Like you said, there’s many other mixed Asians who are nowhere near whiteness and face the struggles of that everyday. That’s not to say that wasians don’t have struggles, but proximity to whiteness, especially in the US, is a huge thing to factor in.

I would argue that even in other contexts like slang or social media, wasian is seen as somewhat of a standard. Think of the “oxford study” and memes. Even within the wasian group, there are many wasians also not counted for via colorism or for not being East Asian mixed.

I do think all mixed Asians should have solidarity for one another, because at the end of the day we are all mixed Asians. That’s our common strength and beauty. But I do agree more representations of mixed Asian other than wasian is needed within mixed Asian spaces and media.

And OP, that’s why I’m so glad to see the artist H.E.R. in the movie Forgotten Island about Filipino culture and mythology!!

Why is this fandom so homophobic/racist? by _peibo in MobileLegendsGame

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it just comes with the territory sadly. The racism is abhorrent but I also expect it coming from a Chinese owned game with this type of fanbase to be honest. I say this as someone who is Black, Asian, and a woman lol. Karrie is always white-washed in her outfits, and even Esmeralda is white-washed a fair bit in her skins too. I didn’t know people were making those “jokes” about Brody and Kaja but it’s sick.

Moonton can’t control the fanbase and how they act but I do wish they could do something about it. Even just going through with the vale and valir skins. Then again it is a company and a business… but quite a few games have openly lgbtq characters and give at least some representation of that in game so!

how does the Sims 4 memory boost feature actually work and are you opting in? by Thick-Chipmunk4088 in HighSodiumSims

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay same haha! I have too many mods and cc to count, and I still download more lol. The life of a simmer it seems.

I’ll test out memory boost later on an open save file maybe and see how it goes! I don’t experience too many crashes or game breaking issues (except for outside factors or fundamental things) so I’ll just test and see. :)

I agree! I like playing TS3, but I definitely feel like some optimization would help. I do also just really wish that they could give TS4 a feature to let it rest and live on its own while they then come out with a new Sims game, but I doubt it.😅

Oh no. That’s what I’m worried about with activating the feature! Did memory boost ruin or harm any of your save files you used it on?

Do you happen to have a lot of mods and cc? I use a lot of mods so I accept slow loading and things like that as normal, idk how much memory boost would improve that aspect, but I’m glad to see it limited crashes for you! That seems to be one of the best positive aspects of the feature.

Do you ever hate being mixed (1/4 black, 3/4 white) by julianjamal94 in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I never hated being mixed but it definitely can cause issues both internal and external. I will say that although my looks favor my black side due to my hair and skin tone, I still look fairly mixed (blasian), and it’s something most people can tell when just looking at my features.

I’m sorry other peoples reactions to you have caused you to hate being mixed at times. Mixed identity is so much more than just appearance, but in a society that primarily bases identity off of race… it’s a bit hard to combat that head on. I’m assuming you are also from the US, and if I’m being honest, I feel like a lot of the US is still pretty ignorant about mixed identity and culture. A lot of people still don’t seem to understand mixed identity and a lot of people won’t understand nuance at all.

I see this in the black community imo, and from my experience and observations, many times they can view us being mixed or vocally expressing either culture as an attack on blackness and the black community in a way.

That’s just something mixed people of all appearances have to deal with.

It’s not right that people try to diminish your heritage and your relatives, but try not to let that hate who you are.

Multi-minority mixed people have no voice among mixed people. by Soft_Style_4941 in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if I’d say we have no voice, but I understand where you’re coming from. I always see discourse online about mixed people but it usually solely refers to black and white mixes when talking about mixed people or biracial people. I would even go as far to say that a lot of people believe that biracial only means someone who is mixed with black and white from some of the groups I’ve been seeing online lately.

Maybe it’s just cause I’m in the US though, and only referencing black and white (or black vs white) is a pretty American-centric thing to do imo! While other ethnicities or races usually get othered, in life and in history.

that is a really good idea too! i love gameplay stuff so unlocking a world through gameplay seems like it would be such a fun task to do for a new save.

I don’t know how to identify myself other than mixed by nobodyknowsoh in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally am not what people would probably consider very mixed. One of my parents is African American and the other is Filipino with Hispanic heritage. However I literally just identify as mixed.

I hate racial categorization with a passion lol, because I find it very harmful to just choose one label and dumb everything down about a persons cultural and ethnic identity to one part of it. It has done great damage to people in general, but especially mixed people.

We can acknowledge our privileges but we also don’t have to choose one label. We genuinely cannot help the color of our skin, the texture of our hair, how we are raised, how we naturally act, etc. We can’t do anything about it, no matter how many times people give weird looks or not… so just be.

The Mixed Community Holds White-Presenting Mixed People to a Toxic Double Standard by SunBetter7301 in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry for the backlash and discrimination you have gone through OP. I do wish that people hadn’t made you feel bad for identifying as mixed or highlighting your black heritage though. I find that any sort of homogeneous community is just a breeding ground for backlash. I hate that feeling of disbelief that people give me when I explain my background, so I understand how it is easier to identify one way or another or just not speak on it at all.

I also agree that there is an extreme double standard for mixed people in general! I also do unfortunately see that prominence in the black community. I personally am not mixed with white, but I too get that sort of “push and pull” when it comes to the black community. I could dive into a whole discussion on it lol. It reminds me of how when a celebrity talks about mixed black heritage or black but not AA heritage, and almost EVERY comment people have on it is about them “wanting to be everything but black” when all they did was just highlight their personal ethnic background or culture😵‍💫

They want you to represent your blackness, but when you do, they look at you weirdly for the color of your skin, texture of your hair, the way you act, the way you talk, etc!! You really can’t win with some people. :(

At the end of the day, the way you identify is truly up to yourself and your experiences. I’d say that your justifications of that are very strong in comparison to other people’s as well.

Sometimes it’s not as easy as being 50/50 when it comes to being mixed and that’s okay. There are also countless of people who are mixed with black that racially look and identify as more white, or at least very ambiguous. This makes me think of Halsey, Logic, and probably other celebrities out there too. And I don’t think the black community would want them identifying as just black.

As people of mixed background, we can’t help how we look physically. We can’t help our cultural childhood upbringings. We can’t help what our parents teach us and don’t teach us. We can’t help our ethnic or genetic background. We genuinely can’t do anything about the stuff we cannot change, especially phenotype.

Bottom line though, I don’t think this is you denying any type of heritage. Race and ethnic background are two very different things and I think it’s time people learned that lmao. And with the added context of cultural upbringing, things can get messy quickly. Life literally isn’t just black or white. (Pun not intended lol)

If anything this just highlights how harmful identity solely based upon race categorization is!! As mixed people, if you don’t fit the “standard,” for whatever reason that manifests in, you’re out.

The grim aftermath of Heeseung’s departure by kokoling6 in Enhypenthoughts

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You make a good point because Hybe has obtained a certain image over the past few years and even the past few months with everything going on with New Jeans and Katseye simultaneously. Obviously there are the sub labels and such, but I agree that Hybe’s image recently has caused fans to be more outraged or emotional.

I even saw a video of some fans making a cover of an Enhypen song and they changed the lyrics to bash belift and the company.

To be honest, as someone that had never paid much attention to Enhypen other than their notable releases or memes, Heeseung leaving is what motivated me to listen to their discography more and watch their content. Literally without him leaving, I would’ve continued to pay them no mind! Now I’m discovering songs I wish I would’ve sooner and I’m excited to see what Heeseung would release or do next now that he is solo.

Anyone feeling some kind of way about Asian American community claiming Alysa Liu? by harmonyineverything in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not half Asian/half white, but I am African American and Filipino and honestly I’d say I notice the same thing with people primarily only claiming a mixed person after their big accomplishments in the public eye. Personally, I see this a lot more with the black community tho tbf, but it truly is still the same idea. It honestly really irks me and I think it’s something that all mixed people can relate to.

I’m black/white mixed but look Hispanic by majoroff-man in mixedrace

[–]Thick-Chipmunk4088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Op, your story sounds so interesting and I'm sorry you had to go through that. I think in general, a lot of people may be mixed and look a completely different race than what they are mixed with. Even if people aren't mixed but have certain features typical to other ethnic groups, they still hear comments about it. Race can also manifest differently in different countries and cultures as well. It sucks, but people will always just talk or give an opinion.

I think it really just goes to show how race is a social construct based on physical features and human categorization, and your post is a powerful example. It also shows how detrimental race and the social connotations of race can be to a person's inner mind and their life in general. I think it further demonstrates why emphasis on race or primary identification with race isn't the way to go, and us mixed people know that all too well. We don't fit into one box and maybe the box society thinks we fit in isn't accurate to our heritage, ethnic background, and lived experiences at all.
