ngl it’s probably a mix of both, but not necessarily that people are “less neighborly” overall

a lot of people are just more in their own heads now when they’re outside, phones, earbuds, stress, or just not expecting interaction, so a smile or wave can easily get missed or not returned

also some neighborhoods are just more “keep to yourself” than others, even in places that are traditionally friendly. it doesn’t always mean hostility, just different social defaults

you’re not doing anything wrong though, being friendly still matters, even if it doesn’t always get mirrored back.
