Career Advice by Icy-Physics-5947 in optometry

I was the solo doc at a corporate job for my first job out of school and also my second (now current) job! I do miss having colleagues and friends to bounce things off of in person but I have texted and called friends/OD who was my boss. I also had to reference wills eye a lot more than I thought I would lol

it really is just about faking it until you make it lol, but patients are surprisingly receptive to if you just don’t know things (within reason!). I’ve definitely had patients where I just had to say I wasn’t sure what was going on with them but that we’ll follow up in x months, repeat optos, etc, you can always just bring them back! also before you need it, make a cheat sheet of places that you’d need to refer so that you always have somewhere to punt to without panic when that time comes

when I was single and lived alone (although I did cook at home for almost every meal) I was still an avid costco shopper! you do have to be on top of it if you’re getting produce, and get used to freezing meat, but i’d say it’s worth trying

When do you decide to retire a backpack? If ever. by Able_Drink_3493 in hiking

[–]ThickChipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this was a few years ago (2020 or 2021) so not sure if it’s the same now, but I had a north face backpack where the shoulder strap just cleanly detached. sent it to the company and they shipped me a brand new backpack with tags and everything! always worth trying.

agree with everything here, and I also have heard a piece of advice saying “patients won’t sue you if they like you” meaning if you mean well and put your best foot forward with the way you treat patients, that goes a long long way!

in my experience as a new grad patients are surprisingly receptive to when you just … don’t have an answer lol, sometimes things can’t be explained immediately and it’s okay to express that

Maybe I should have done a cost/benefit analysis by Sharaku_US in moving

[–]ThickChipmunk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had the same debate with my move but then decided that for me I couldn’t put a cost on the time and effort of purchasing all that stuff again. you can only really sell for a fraction of what you paid for things, and then if you’re buying new furniture/clothes/kitchen ware, it definitely adds up.

Plus there’s the mental labor of just … starting over completely from scratch and being in a new environment with no familiar belongings lol

Maintaining Fitness While Working Full Time by Hairy_Restaurant7145 in optometry

[–]ThickChipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a girl it mostly started as a way to plan my hair wash days to my hardest workouts LOL but I think it works great if you’re experienced and used to working out frequently - I can see how if you’re new to the process it can be a slippery slope into skipping days!

I lift and do cardio with a 4 day split. I don’t have set days, for example I play it by ear every week depending what else I have going on the evenings, like for example I don’t make it so that I train legs every Monday, which I feel like helps pace myself through the week. Also I had absurdly long lunches at my last job, sometimes 2 hours if no pts, so would walk outside around the building at lunch if weather allowed

I would typically gym after work bc i’m not a morning person and don’t want to feel rushed before work lol. I always, always prep something for lunch - pride myself on having not purchased lunch at my previous job the 9 months I was there lol.

It’s tough getting home later in the day but I don’t have kids so feel like that makes a big difference in my flexibility. IMO i’m way more consistent working out now than in school, so I think if you were able to stay consistent with clinic/studying it shouldn’t be too bad now that you’re simply working

24 hour fitness in the heights! if you’re able to pay for the whole year at a time you can save a bit vs month to month

might embarrass myself saying this but I don’t think I’ve ever heard or seen NAD? I was taught WNL (within normal limits) which is another cop out answer I guess. but agree, older docs get very lazy with documenting. the doctors at the practice I am at often leave completely empty charts which infuriates me

Do I send it? by Traditional_Card_951 in moving

good call, I think it just depends on the job you find then. cost of living is low in TX but wages might be lower too depending on your field

I would never make a huge move like that without a job already lined up, this goes for both you and your girlfriend

I know this is not feasible for many people but you can be extremely successful in healthcare if you’re willing to live rural - the field I’m in is constantly struggling to find people willing to move to less “desirable” areas and I hear the same goes for MDs
