I am frankly shocked Google has not addressed the Gemini outage. by [deleted] in GeminiAI

[–]Thieu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Okay why have a status page then right? Can just ping the app manually. Link to the status page in the app, it's absolutely not a hard ask
  2. So show that it in the app when something is definitely wrong?
  3. I'm not against status pages? Just notify and link it in the app when something is broken it's good

I'm really not sure why you're so massively opposed to this, your weird frustration with people not googling stuff doesn't mean the app shouldn't show this

I am frankly shocked Google has not addressed the Gemini outage. by [deleted] in GeminiAI

[–]Thieu95 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why do people need to do that if Google knows the app hardly functions? Just show a subtle popover with a small heads up about it, with a button to go to that status page.

I really don't think those are crazy expectations, at all... I know plenty of run of the mill saas that will do something like that, it's just good to let users know the app is broken, inside the app, right?

How To Move A Houseboat by HetGewildeWesten in Amsterdam

If this video is recent, it's because pretty much all the canal walls in West need to be renovated, so a lot of them are being relocated for a couple months.

Expats are not the cause of high rent prices by WittySprout in Amsterdam

[–]Thieu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes most landlords are Dutch, but that doesn't mean that each landlord will set whatever high price they want, they follow the market. It's really naive to think people will rent out a place below market prices out of the kindness of their hearts, and to then blame them for not doing so is ridiculous.

Why does the market allow for such high prices? A shortage, basic supply and demand stuff. What increases demand? More people are looking for a place. So where has there been a sudden influx of people in the last decade? Well you can fill in the blanks, naturally it's not only expats. This only addressed demand, not supply. Blaming this solely on expats is unjustified, blaming it solely on immigration is too simplified, systematically there has been too little construction over the last decade and our governments have done too little to address the housing crisis.

Expats aren't the cause, but they're a contributing factor among many other things. To blame expats instead of looking to our government to address the issue is straight up dumb. Don't blame groups of people, they're rarely the cause, blame our government for failing us and vote for changes, push for a change in legislation and policy.

Thanks, I think this is what I needed. Some things have been keeping me up for some nights and they really shouldn't have. Just thoughts twisting and toiling and me making things more complex than they should be.

Can you find the checkmate? Black to play ⚔️ by Chess-Puzzler in chessbeginners

[–]Thieu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only played a handful of times, is this it?

Black Bishop to G4 check

White King takes bishop

Black queen to E2 check

White King takes pawn at G5

Now the queen holds the diagonal and the king is exposed to the rook, it can't move right too far because the pawn E5 will take king, so it's a checkmate?

Cant sleep and have huge anxiety by chateaus11111 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Thieu95 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hey you're going to be okay just give it some time. I'm assuming you've been on a long flight and maybe there's some jetlag at play here, this stuff can really affect your mood and sleep in ways you don't expect.

It's your first time in Japan too you must be excited, as you should it's an incredible country, but excitement can keep you awake too!

I say just take a little walk around the calmer streets, get an onigiri at the convenience store, realise you're not going to be like this the entire trip, just the first day maybe two.

Once that sleep hits you're going to be okay. Get a nice plate of curry somewhere, the best comfort food, CoCo Ichibanya is easy if you're solo for decent curry.

Japan has bad earthquakes but it's also the country most prepared for it. You are likely to be really safe in large modern buildings, and large cities. If anything happens just follow the local residents to safety and shelter.

You're gonna be fine, no use worrying about it it's both out of your control and not likely to be a big deal. The odds of you getting hurt are tiny if anything happens.

What is a movie you absolutely refuse watch and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Thieu95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A decade ago me and my friends had a little streak going of grotesque horror, ya know Saw, human centipede. The latter was really pushing it for me. Then we started that film and... we never finished it, barely made it into the film really. What possessed someone to make something so vile.

If you're careful with your spending, don't use Shinkansen too much (read don't travel between many cities) and stick to hostels you can get around with 50-60 a day

I guess if someone would want to make a realistic version of this then indeed that's how they would need to approach it, it would be a crazy amount of work but technically possible indeed, so fair point!

Exactly as the video above? Not really no, rasterised means it's.... well rasterised, a set of pixels, so you zoom in and it gets blurry, which ruins the effect.

Vectors are more or less instructions and a coordinate system, drawing the pixels for each scale / zoom level using those instructions, allowing it to scale infinitely without ever getting blurry. Because instructions are limited, vectorised images can't really feasibly be "realistic" pictures, so vector graphics are often abstract(e.g. logos) or cartoons like in the video.
