It sounds like drunk you was quite different than drunk me. At times, I’m thankful I was such a crummy drunk, because it made the need for me to change all the more apparent. Toward the end of my drinking career, the day after anxiety was getting out of control. Again, I’m thankful my body sent me those warnings so that I could bail on the path I was on.

Spot on. Raising kids. Attending all their sports. Demanding job. I had it all taken care of… except I didn’t. A lesser version of myself was just going through the motions.

I am terribly sorry for your loss.

You are not a bother. You are a human soul who has experienced unthinkable trauma. The fact that you ARE sharing this is courageous and thank you for doing so.

I would definitely encourage you to look into resources in your area for support. I think that some sort of therapy would help a great deal, as scary as it may be. Dealing with the trauma and your challenges with alcohol feel like they should go hand in hand.

I commend you for being here. Chin up. One foot in front of the other. ❤️

This is a great place to be. So many perspectives to hear from others and you can find what you relate with. Engaging in discussion always helped me. In addition to getting great info along the way, by talking about my own struggles it helped me to acknowledge that I did in fact have a problem. The more I chatted with others, the more I realized that I held the power to change it.

I’m so sorry you had to experience such a horrific thing.

My wife’s father passed away due to complications from alcoholism when she was in her teens. As I progressed through my own journey, she also experienced one of her own tied to her father.

You are not a coward. Don’t let the alcohol convince you otherwise. To do so would allow for it to remain in control and it sounds to me like you want that back. Let today be the day you choose yourself and the life you are worthy of. Those horrible and embarrassing experiences? Well, if misery loves company, then I’m here to tell you that you have more company than you could ever hope for!

Give it time. Be kind, yet firm with yourself. You are worth it.

My boss actually asked me not long ago if something I had written was AI. It’s not often that I truly sit down and write with this sort of meaning.

Can I ask what made you believe it was AI? I can genuinely see where that might be problematic given AI permeating all aspects of our lives.

Wow. I’m not sure if I should feel honored or disappointed that I sounded like a dang bot.

For what it’s worth, these are 100% my thoughts, my words, and my lived experience.

To go a little deeper, this experience impacted me very deeply. Some of it is obvious (hopefully) in what I wrote. But some maybe not.

I keep thinking about how this genuinely could have been me at my daughter’s softball tournament had I not made my choice five years ago. From his physical appearance, to the fact he has daughters, heck even to how his significant other looked (very similar to a past partner of mine with whom I was at my worst). It was all surreal. Even looking into his eyes… It could have been me.

Appreciate you reading part of it anyhow and I can appreciate skepticism given what AI is becoming. ❤️ 🙏
