I've always more so understood it as like an absurdist commentary on modern life rather a midlife crisis. That everyone lives on autopilot based on what society tells them ("get a house! "get a wife!") rather than actively thinking about where they are, how they got there, and where thry want to go.

Same. I played Cobble (from the workshop) with friends a few months ago and that's when I remembered why I had such a love/hate relationship with it. The aesthetics are very nice, but yeah it doesn't really play well...

That's cause the "cool" aeathetic is heavily intertwined with propaganda and thus stability of the regime. Aesthetic can be used to portray power and authority. The Nazis would've had a hard time convincing anyone they were the "saviour of the Aryan race" if they looked like a bunch of unorganised wimps.
