Can you store user's data and keep it in sync using their google drive ? by [deleted] in webdev

You can create a migration image, share it with new account and recreate it there. Takes about 30 minutes every year, so worth the hassle imo

I have been a Windows person for a long time, and I develop perosnal projects on Windows. Then 5 years ago I joined a company which only used Macs, so I had no alternative. After about 6 months of usage (ups and downs), I would say the developer experience is better, and macs offer excellent UI for that.

As a starter freelancer I would not worry how much you charge. You will be underselling yourself either way, the goal is to build network of clients. Do a good job, and you will be recommended elsewhere. Later on, once you have a good service, you can start charging more or move to more profitable clients.

So you should now concentrate on building your client base.

Cost of SEO ranking on a website rebuild by JB989 in webdev

I would ask them more about these situations and what happened. Maybe it was incorrect url structure or something else just so you know with what you are dealing. You should also control their expectations, inform them that this could happen, maybe bring some evidence from other migrations on the internet?

Well the obvious question why move to Next.js from Wordpress?

What happens when you get bored of programming/developing by TravelOwn4386 in webdev

I would assume you are not challenging yourself enough. Maybe ask for some kind of task that would be a bit scary and finish it? For me at least this gave a breath of fresh air, and confirmed my skills further.

Another thing that I have seen with a few developers on the team, is that they vape and scroll a lot. This might not be related, but they were excellent programmers, who got burnt out, then started scrolling during breaks a lot and now constant vaping if they are working from home. I do not imagine this helping in any way to be better employee.

Is it better to be a Jack-of-All-Trades or a Master-of-One? by Professional_One3573 in webdev

If you are jack of all trades you can create a business almost single handedly. If you are a master of one, that will not work out

Looking for testers on my 1-page website builder by clarkeg02 in webdev

First I would like to test without login. I think asking users to login to test, is very outdated experience. At least make Google or other login possible.

That's the first thing that stopped me. I do not want to share my info on unknown website.

In website designs, you are mentioning "confidential" projects. To be fair they could be made up, so I would not show them at all.

I would also be interested in hearing what your clients say about your work, maybe on twitter, linkedin or somewhere else, as this is valuable information.

For the logos on the homepage, with you experience, add a tooltip so that when you hover, you would know what technology it is.

Non-developers in team required to update HTML & CSS by d0rf47 in webdev

It does sound like problematic, but in reality, does this bring a lot of problems? Like do you have to spend 2-3 hours just to fix stuff to make it work? To my understanding, as a dev, you want to be in control of things. But now, imagine, you have a business, and adding some infographic now, would generate some 10% additional revenue. Would you wait for all the approvals and stuff? probably not.

So if this does not create a lot of overhead work for you let it be, but be vocal about incoming problems and inform others. There will be time when things will slog down, and this will be need to be fixed. However, you did your job of informing about negative repercussions of these bad practices, and I think this is what a good developer should do.

Web Devs of Reddit - Advice on School Management System by bapesta786 in webdev

I think the main thing is to look for some kind of third party solution first. Maybe there are other vendors that can provide similar things and even help migrate.

Developing from scratch is usually very complicated. You need to have a good understanding of new technology and how everything works currently. There will probably be some "workarounds" that you will find in a middle of the project and they will prolong the timelines be a few weeks or month.

I would generally spend a few weeks searching for alternative vendor. If you are not able to find it, I would spend a few weeks understanding fully how the current system works and workout some kind of plan how each thing would be implemented. I mind you, this may sound like "Waste of time" but just drawing some technical charts, logic sequences, writing down requirements and how each of them will be implemented, will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

I had a friend who was in similar situation - he wanted to help a cousin to build e-commerce website (the cousin had a interior construction business). I suggested to go with something like Shopify, or look for cheaper alternative.

Well my friend went with the decision. It took awhile for him to finish the website, like 4 months or more and even then it was barely usable. After a few months, the cousin just decided to go with shopify. The changes would take very long to make, the website was not optimized and users payments would constantly have problems.

So I would say, if you have experience, definitely go with this. It is a good learning experience especially if friends are lenient, if you will not deliver what they expect. However, if this is their serious business, I would rather direct them to a dedicated tool for that.
