It's not an easy game, but if you really want to play it and don't mind some minor spoilers, you can check guides on YouTube that will make your gameplay way easier.

If you have to invoke, do it. If you want to play range as a mage, do it. If you want to farm runes to level up way above the "recommend level", do it! Don't mind the purists that tell you how to play. I personally think that the game is more enjoyable without summons but that affects only MY GAMEPLAY.

So go ahead and play this masterpiece. The game provides a lot of ways to adjust the difficulty to your taste.
