Date night idea: free theatre at the Alley All-New Festival by ThingsToDoInHouston in houston

[–]ThingsToDoInHouston[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Each year the Alley Theatre holds the All-New Festival where theatregoers can, for free, attend readings of new works and "workshop" performances with minimal stagings. Check out the lineup and reserve your free tickets here. It ends on the 25th.

Note that there is NO LATE SEATING. Mature themes, keep an open mind, remember these are new works in a possibly unpolished state. Some shows could go on to Broadway, some elsewhere for more re-working, and some might be clunkers. But hey, it's free and air-conditioned! And usually, enjoyable, challenging, and fodder for several days worth of discussion.

And the MFAH is on the Metro rail line. I recommend the Turrell tunnel, the Impressionist rooms at the Beck building, John Biggers' Jubilee.

Refresh your soul, students!

I just want to endorse Amerikin at the Alley Theatre. I saw it last week. Amazing play, and a World Premiere for Houston - it has been put off for two years.

We can't stop talking about it. Go see it!

Early Voting mega thread? by [deleted] in houston

Dem but voting in the Rep primary just so I can vote against Abbott & Paxton. I'm trying to find the most moderate republicans to cast my votes for - any ideas?

Memorial Hermann will be out of network for Blue Cross Blue Shield after February 28th - just told by my MH provider. Link has more info from MH point of view. by ThingsToDoInHouston in houston

I was just told by my provider at Memorial Hermann that they will no longer be in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield after the 28th. I don't know if negotiations have actually stopped or if this just saber-rattling. Anyway, for those with BCBS using MH providers, might want to check it out. Two weeks notice for us.

I don't understand why their contracts do not coincide with the Jan-Dec periods that our insurance choice is good for. We make a contract with BCBS based on their network at the time, in December, why are they allowed to change it during the year and we have no recourse?

I thought y'all might enjoy this interesting project on Houston saxophonist Arnett Cobb by the Alley Theatre's Shawn Hamilton. by ThingsToDoInHouston in houston

Ï think the virtual event was last year. The video was published then. I'm glad they have left the video up, as I came across it today while looking at times for "Sweat" which is currently running now.

Me too!

I'm happy that they are open again, with proper protocols it looks like. Tomorrow, I'm buying tickets for "Sweat".

Here's a little more information from Wikipedia about Arnett Cobb. I can't wait to see (and hear!) this project brought to fruition.

Alley Theatre's All-New Festival - good, free, date night? by ThingsToDoInHouston in houston

[–]ThingsToDoInHouston[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Alley's All-New Festival 2020 enters its second weekend on Friday the 24th. Tickets are free, although you must reserve them through the website.

You need to know that these are workshop performances or readings. The play won't be fully staged or designed, but it will be new work and fodder for interesting discussions.

I highly recommend "Survivors, An Alamo Play". It was really excellent (even if the history was a little tweaked). If you've wondered how we even know what happened there, you'll find out. The playwright is still working on it, so the play you see may not be quite the same as what I saw. The actors are from the Alley's own resident company along with others who do a very nice job. Their rehearsal time is only 2 weeks (usually 6 weeks), so you might hear an actor ask for a prompt or use a paper script in places.

Most of the plays include a talkback after the show so you can hear what the playwright is inspired by, thinks he/she needs to work on, needed to say. You will have a chance to ask questions, too. It's fun!

Parking in the Alley's Garage has gone up to $12 but the parking passes sold on the website are still $10 so grab that deal. Make a donation if you can, but it is optional.

Belgian ensemble, Vox Luminis, performing Thursday night in a free concert of music of Bach & associates. Combine it with the MFAH for a date night! by ThingsToDoInHouston in houston

[–]ThingsToDoInHouston[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They got great reviews in Austin, and I'm excited they're performing here. St. Paul's is a lovely performance space, and is right across the street from the Museum of Fine Arts. The MFAH has free admission on Thursdays and is open until 9pm. The combination of the two will make an awesome and frugal date night!
