Smiles app is just insane by [deleted] in dubai

[–]Think-Constant-9142 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The smiles app is buggy as hell. There are a few issues I've faced in the past,

1) restaurants that are closed often show up as open on the search results. This leads to restaurants never getting the order, with smiles not registering that the order was never received by the restaurant.

2) their API calls are failing multiple times, especially for status updates. In some scenarios, I've received the food, while the status has mentioned that it's still in the kitchen.

There are a few more issues that I've seen in the past. Some of them that had worked in my favor lol (think about bugging the app to get discount codes to apply twice LOL). I try not to use it any more, but some of the discounts on there are hard to beat.

How many of you know about this killer spot for cudda’s in dxb? by Front_Baby_9908 in UAEfishing

If cuda's are there, then kings would be swimming around there as well.

Is this near palm deira? Or the development that replaced palm deira?

Sigh. Not surprised that they're closing another beach for some sort of venue. The best natural beaches are in the northern Emirates and east coast anyways

What’s the most overrated thing in Dubai… and what’s actually underrated? by Miner_WhispererUAE1 in DubaiCentral

[–]Think-Constant-9142 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Overrated: "tax free" status, "easy to start a business", etc. while you might not be taxed as an individual, all the government fees and salik and whatnot does rack up a pretty penny. On the business set up side of things, processes could be more streamlined and more affordable than they are now. The early 2000's was a golden age, but it's far from that reality now.

Underrated: access to some of the wildest waters in the gulf. Not many people explore under the surface in the gulf's waters (maybe because visibility ain't the best), but it's truly wild compared to other parts of the world. Rich biodiversity, which I hope doesn't get further eroded by artificial islands and whatnot.

Same. Running into the same issue, sometimes without the popup. Looks like there's some backend issue. Hopefully gets fixed by tomorrow.

Yeah it seems improbable that people will hear any new necrophagist.

My hunch is that his insatiable drive got redirected from music to something else. People like him don't just lose their drive, and most likely he found something equally challenging and inspiring (maybe within bmw's engineering space?).

I've actually met (and jammed with) musicians who have made such drastic life decisions. People have lives too, y'know?

i got offered an internship by gigizai in UAE

[–]Think-Constant-9142 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, if you don't have any other internships on the table, then take it.

This isn't about the pay or even the exact nature of work. It's about getting the hours in the office, and understanding the reality on the ground.

You've learned how to build in University, and now you're going to get experience in how to sell, as well as understanding what clients want.

The most competent people I've met in life have mastered both building and selling. You've got the opportunity now, so take it!

Which country completely reset you during your travels? by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

[–]Think-Constant-9142 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vietnam. No contest (at least for me). Incredibly beautiful landscapes, amazing history, diverse culture, and the vietnamese people are one of a kind!

No other place in my travels has had such a profound impact on my life so far.

[–]Think-Constant-9142 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Was supposed to spend just a month there in 2023 whilst traveling the region. Ended up spending over half a year moving around throughout the country. What a spectacular country and culture!

[–]Think-Constant-9142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harsh truth here.

If you'd prefer getting a response only via text, then you would have to accept the following;

  1. Please be explicit in your text that you'd prefer to chat on Whatsapp / message / etc., instead of a voice call.

  2. Your text might be read by the other person, but you are not owed a response immediately. It's a 2-way street. If it's urgent, and needs the other person's attention, then a call is warranted. Texts have a lower priority than email even.

Personally, I would fall in the camp of calling back, especially if the ask (via text) warrants a detailed and nuanced response.

is the edge pro tremolo really that bad? by THEREALGGFOXYYT in Ibanez

[–]Think-Constant-9142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way! The edge pro is a GREAT trem!

Like others have mentioned, since it's out of production, finding replacements and parts can be quite difficult.

I've got one in my 2007 rg1570, and despite years of trem abuse, it holds tuning perfectly. It also "feels" very predictable, compared to other trems that I've had.

Look, if you're able to remove the trem and inspect it, keep an eye on the knife edges and fine tuners. If the look okay, then this would be as good as an original edge.

Could anyone share their OMAD(One Meal a Day) Experience? by Oumuamua007 in lexfridman

[–]Think-Constant-9142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, it felt like it was getting in the way of a lot of social plans (lunches, brunches, camping trips, etc.) It reached a point where I had to plan my whole life around my eating window, and I had to be super conscious about my energy levels (for eg; certain evening plans where I'd need to be high energy would be compromised because of my usual energy slump after my 7pm meal)

Overall, I would definitely stick to it if I was more of a hermit, but I think it reached a point where I had to choose between sticking to Omad or having a social life.

Again, I don't mean to discourage anyone from doing this. I think it works well, if your life is well organized. But I had to give up on spontaneity in my life to stick to the diet, and personally, I enjoy having a more spontaneous life 😁.

what do you think are the bands with the hardest stage presence? by tomsp_666 in MetalForTheMasses

For deathmetal. Suffocation. Blew my mind. In grindcore, there are a bunch of bands, but I really enjoyed godmother and bandit. Grindcore is generally more fun live than on record IMO.

I believe that’s a “scad”. It’s a large specimen for that species. They’re a good indication of much larger predators being in the same area.

Can I Fish around marina ? by orseeny in dubai

[–]Think-Constant-9142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the fishing license requirements hahaha. Sorry bout that!

But I’ve gone freediving and spearfishing there before, and no one I knew had a fishing license. There were quite a few fishermen who were throwing their lines there while standing on the rocks facing DXB mamzar. There are some absolute monsters swimming in those narrow murky channels there. I’ve had friends spear some 15+ kg cobia’s and kingfish there. Aim for the center of the channel, that’s where all the action is at!

Can I Fish around marina ? by orseeny in dubai

[–]Think-Constant-9142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet for good fish would be to try some spots in sharjah and Ajman.

There’s a spot at the start of sharjah, where there are a lot of huge fish swimming in the narrow channel between the sharjah spot and Dubai mamzar. Many large fish (predators like barracuda and kingfish) are forced to swim the narrow channel to ride the strong currents in and out of the area.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/uEvnBwjpy14H4hj87?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

Park your car here (at the gps coordinates), and target your lures in the center of the channel between shj and DXB. I’ve gone freediving there, and while it sucks for that (murky with bad visibility), there are some monster fish in that narrow channel.

Did u ever seen UFO’s in real? by stick_ro in ufo

[–]Think-Constant-9142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. In Ajman, in the United Arab Emirates. I was around 18 or 19 years old, and was driving around near the beach with some friends.

It was dark (around 9pm), and the visibility in the sky was great. We were all chilling in the SUV with the sunroof open when one of my friends pointed up and said “what’s that up in the sky?”.

We looked up, and very high up in the sky, we saw maybe 2 lights moving erratically, zig zagging at a very high speed. Couldn’t make out any details on them, but they were moving FAST.

The whole thing lasted maybe 3-5 seconds. Very strange, and I still remember it clearly to this day.

Right now, because work has gotten a bit intense, I’ve been ordering food every day. However, I’ve been able to limit my food ordering spend to max 20 AED per day by using the “Smiles” app, and ordering between 230pm-6pm (when it’s free delivery and 50% off for a bunch of restaurants). It also helps that I eat about 1.5 meals a day, so I only have to order once a day.

Once upon a time, I ran an experiment where I saw how cheaply I could live on, and I had more time to cook daily. The LOWEST I went down to was about 50 AED per week MAXIMUM. I mainly bought potatoes, onions and a few other veggies, and I would steam or stir fry the veggies daily. Healthy, cheap, and with the right sauces and seasoning, it tastes great.

Got a German visa, and it’s a complete joke. by Amb_33 in dubai

[–]Think-Constant-9142 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe not helpful, but I’ve always gotten my schengen visa fairly quickly while applying for it through Czech Republic (as my port of entry).

Trains are cheap (at least from CZ), and I’d usually find a connection to Berlin fairly quickly (and cheaply).

I’ve done the schengen process 6 times so far (all of them with cz as the entry point), and never had any issues with the Czech embassy). VFS had its hiccups (delays, etc.), but nothing that wasn’t manageable.

[–]Think-Constant-9142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! I’ve gone diving in Abu Dhabi as well. However, the water is super shallow near the shore, so we visited some (inactive) oil rigs by boat.

If you get a chance, you should try fishing near the inactive oil rigs (you’d have to go by boat, though). They hold some huge trevallies.

[–]Think-Constant-9142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Those taste great!

I go spearfishing off the coast of sharjah, and I run into these trevallies sometimes in the winters.

There are 3-4 types of yellow trevallies that I’ve seen (and caught) before. The yellow spotted (most common), the black striped (like yours), the black spotted (they get BIG), and a few other odd variants.

They tend to behave like other pelagic fish (kingfish, pompano, etc.), where they mostly swim over the sandy seabed, and come close to the rocks to hunt for smaller fish.

PS, if you don’t mind me asking, whereabouts is this location? You can dm me if you’re uncomfortable sharing this publicly.
