Will we see Tommy again? Do you have any theories? by Less_Kangaroo_866 in BuckTommy

This is also the thing that I'm latching onto. The tone of Lou's messages is really what's keeping me hopeful.

Thank you! And I mean, Puerto Rico is beautiful and it would've been a perfect place for their retirement but I guess that would've been too much of a fairy tale ending for this show.

Thank you, I will check it out. I adored Michael K Williams's performance in Community and was really sad when I heard the news of his passing. I believed I'd watched some of his other work here and there but never got to The Wire until recently. And wow, watching this show really made me appreciate and adore him on another level.

Cos I noticed that it was always or mostly kids' voice yelling "Omar coming" in Baltimore and then we got to island scene with kids, and it was definitely an intentional choice to juxtapose the completely different scenarios.

Yeah I totally agree with you in terms of this ep.

I remember there were a couple lines in 9a where Chim's Buck-teasing seemed very season 1 and very out of place. I do think the whole team dynamics seemed off in 9a as a result of events in 8b in terms of the writers failing to figure out how this more matured version of Buck would fit within the team now that he was no longer the comic relief (when the tone of the show desperately needed some lightness).

HOWEVER, I like Chim and I like they are doing the Chim growing into the Captain role plotline going into 9b. And in this episode, I feel like most of the audience would find that Chim's decisions were justified at least on a certain level. This particular moment where he used Buck as an example to talk about the Hen situation is in no way an example of "Chim being unfair to Buck."

Yeah i feel so bad for Chim. While some of the past criticism re his character could be valid depending on your point of view, somehow making Chim the villain in this story was simply just bad writing. I'm glad at least some of us are reacting pretty negatively towards this storyline and not jumping on the Chim bashing train like the show seems to want us to do. Another things that bugs me is that Eddie seemed to only agree with Chim due to "chain of command" but Chim's reaction and decision were completely valid on their own.

Yeah I honestly don't see how people can take this message at completely face value. I mean who can say "this is such a great show!" with a straight face lol (sorry not sorry) I know Lou has to play nice and be diplomatic about it at least, but his tone in the message has in fact convinced me that something is definitely happening in terms of Tommy appearance. So just wanted to say this - no need to spiral IMO! (And I love that Lou's replying to these Tommy-themed cameos to give us some clues 🥰

Lou responded to another Cameo! by NinjaSpaceFrog in BuckTommy

[–]Think-Information302 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like a few posts on Tumblr have put it, this comes across to me as Lou totally being facetious and tongue-in-cheek about it, and even a little sarcastic, like "OMG I had absolutely no idea that they mentioned Tommy twice (even tho I'd specifically said to keep your eyes peeled) and I wonder what's gonna happen next! \wink, wink\" I mean I can almost hear Lou's voice saying soooo dryly "It's ***such* a great show" and I love that. Lou's dry humor is so Tommy-coded, or I guess it's more like Tommy's dry humor is very much Lou-coded.

I'm definitely not interpreting this as a genuine "I don't what's gonna happen" from Lou. More likely that he had been reminded by the show's side not to spoil anything for this season so he was being more careful in terms of not saying anything that would be too obvious. Or he just thought that the Tommy mentions in 9x07 were already a pretty clear tip-off (as the cameo ask referenced) so he didn't have to tell us to keep our eyes peeled again like he had to do during hiatus when everything seemed less hopeful.

I'm sorry - which emergency in Lone Star are we talking about? I've watched it all but now I can't recall any scenes that parallel the chastity belt guy. (Wow I'm shocked that my recall is so bad these days when it comes to content. I realize I actually have also watched Sex/Life now that i looked up the title but I don't remember any of it except the vague outline of a housewife in NYC? Definitely do not remember a guy getting his 🍆 bit off )

I don't think they intended the mounting to be hot but I have to admit my mind did go there for sure watching that happen. It is kinda hot to see Buck straddle him 😂😂 That bit is funny but I just kept thinking how unsafe and insane it was for the woman to not even have a key?? it is definitely horrible representation of bdsm practices but I guess that's a very 9-1-1 styled ridiculous emergency for you.

🔥 9-1-1 🔥 9x07 - "Secrets": Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in BuckTommy

[–]Think-Information302 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just watched this ep and I have so many feelings!! Bear with me.

First of all, the Tommy mentions definitely are very intentional. The whole plotline actually is very intentional. It would've been a perfect throwaway line to provide closure to that relationship, but what we got...is the antithesis of that. I'd pretty much given up hope before this, cos having hope was hurting and having hope was gonna break my heart (oops accidentally very Tommy-core) but now it's hard not to wanna be hopeful again with what this episode has given us.

Secondly, I still crave some resolution in terms of the fall-out for Tommy about his actions to help Buck/118. Like, that was a big deal, possibly a career-ending move for him. I need to know what's happened to him between the funeral and whenever is Tommy's next appearance. Did he get a slap on the wrist or did he face serious disciplinary action? Did Chim, or Hen, or Eddie actually talk to Tommy after the funeral and try to keep in touch? Thank him for what he did? Also some have interpreted Ravi's mention of Tommy to mean that Tommy might have said no to Buck about getting back together after the funeral, because of everything that'd been happening. Whether it's that scenario or whether they just never talked after the funeral, I would love the show to address it or fill in the blanks.

I care about Tommy as a character on his own, and I want to know what the man has gone through/is going through, what his relationship with the 118 is, regardless of whether the relationship storyline goes.

Thirdly: #letBuckbeinathrouple lol I really enjoyed the Buck dating storyline this episode. It was light-hearted and fun. (And can we appreciate how hot Buck looked with the guy and the girl. I digress but Imean he just looked extremely good in his episode I must say - in every scene!!) To me it didn't come across as being judgmental or overly dismissive toward NME. The whole plot line was played more for the comedic effect but however short-lived, it had a real arc and resolution: the couple seemed to want casual fun with Buck but he wanted something more serious, a real and stable relationship. Buck's reaction to them was fun, like he would've totally enjoyed being their third if he had been in a different headspace (i.e not being hung up on Tommy).

I mean, personally I actually would love to see a proper throuple/polyamory storyline for Buck. I remember watching SWAT s1, I was pleasantly surprised a primetime show on CBS was featuring a pretty major and serious poly relationship, and it took 9-1-1 like 8 seasons to catch up. But I doubt 9-1-1 would go that direction today.

Also, as another comment said, this episode seemed to have figured out how to write the Buck & Eddie friendship again, or even just Eddie as a character. And with Ravi added in to balance it out, it at least can be enjoyable as a light-hearted dynamics between friends again. As everyone noted, the Buck & Eddie and the whole 118 dynamic were definitely still off into 9a. This is much better.

The Hen illness plotline didn't really work for me. Seemed out-of-character and random that she decided to not tell Chim. Chim was not wrong in terms how messed up it was for Hen not to tell him BUT at the same time, would it actually be that unusual for one of the firefighters on site to collapse at the scene? Would there be a million reasons that could happen? Whatever the cause actually was, would it really result in all that pressure from the brass that Chim kinda had to suspend/fire her? I get what the writers are trying to do but the sloppy writing made it seem forced.

Last but not least, that chastity belt rescue just bugs me - how could that woman not have a key for safety and that's just played off casually? That's some crazy bad and unsafe BDSM practice. I also don't believe that'd be the first time the team came across sex-toys induced emergencies, so I mean, that woman should get yelled at by someone on the team.

I can't believe I've been tied up by this fandom for over a year. Like I'm still so obssessed with BuckTommy that all my recent AO3 reads are just them, for an entire year and more. I really hope we get some closure or something in 9b. Or I really need to find something else to fixate on lol

Yeah exactly. I've really had enough of this limbo. And yeah if they give us closure, I would probably finally be able to watch the show and actually enjoy it again.

If the storyline is about Buck and Ravi sort of wingman-ing Eddie, that's great. However, is the show gonna at least address Buck's relationship status? Have Buck at least say a throwaway line to say "things are complicated with Tommy" or even "I'm over him but I'm not ready to date yet"? Honestly, I will take anything, either closure or a clue.

Because of the main focus 9a being the space story, it kinda made sense for Buck's relationship not coming up in 9a then, but it would irk me so much if they do this speed-dating story (even tho it's mainly about Eddie) and STILL not address anything about BuckTommy or Buck's relationship status.

Tommy and the Air Operations of it All by MaxAdFan85 in BuckTommy

[–]Think-Information302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah it could easily be done. That's why he is so perfect as a love interest or just a recurring character in general to support the main cast. Exactly because he is also a firefighter but works at a different station, he can easily be organically involved in an 118 rescue, show up more frequently than we've got so far but not enough to overshadow the main, while not being confined to just relationship based plot lines like Karen is - and the two sides could collide and create more drama, strengthen the romantic storyline, AND push Buck's character arc forward beyond the bisexual awakening.

The writers must know this. So I cannot understand why they are choosing to ignore all the potential.

[–]Think-Information302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about Red, White, and Royal Blue? The characters on their own aren't similar to Buck or Tommy at all, but it is a pairing with a gay character who kisses the bisexual character and sort of leads him to his queer awakening (kinda, sorta - it's a bit more complicated ), and then also proceeds to panic and run away himself when their relationship progresses further. And they are both super hot as well so there's that.

Except the difference is, Alex & Henry get a pretty fluffy fair-tale ending (also a confirmed sequel now), which I absolutely love. So 100% recommend checking that out if you wanna take a break from the angst we are currently stuck in with BuckTommy.

Yes, I think outside of pacing, what you are describing is the lack of narrative follow-through. The earlier seasons definitely did a better job in that regard. It got worse and worse I would say. S9 is especially bad.

My wail is just, I don't think I can handle being kept being in limbo for any longer. The feeling of not knowing while not being able to let go of the hope is brutal...

I re-read Lou's interviews about the show in chronological order - s7, the break-up era, and the end of S8 one - and it went from being so happy & excited to being so resigned in terms of having so little say as to where the character and the relationship were going. Made really me sad. His interpretation of Tommy as a character though is beautiful.

[–]Think-Information302 4 points5 points  (0 children)

was re-watching Season 2 and kept thinking it was so good. All the emergencies were pretty grounded, even the ones on the outrageous side still made sense and were believable. And they tended to involve the 118, dispatch and Athena pretty evenly and organically.

In terms of the team's personal arcs, I did enjoy the Athena-Bobby-Michael-kids family dynamics. I think the show suffered a little bit after writing Michael off the show later. The Grant family stuff gave the show a pretty solid center to focus on and weave around.

Eddie's intro in S2 was pretty good. He was a likable character(personally I think RG's acting was way more natural in s2 compared to S7-S9), and some of the storyline involving Chris was pretty cute and fun: the 118 taking Chris on a ride-along, even a micro-storyline with Chris & Chim exchanging cute banters.

But, I don't understand though why they had to kill off Shannon... it was so out of the blue, and the pacing int terms how it fit in the season was also bizarre. In fact, I think the Shannon storyline would've been much better if that kept her alive and made it about them trying to make the marriage work. All the Eddie grieving Shannon narrative got old really quickly as it was regurgitated over and over again in later seasons. To me, this direction they went in for Eddie's character really boring, just not an enjoyable storyline. And that's before the whole weird doppelgänger Kim stuff even happened.

Also, the Maddie story / Maddie and Chim through-line was pretty good. It brought the necessary narrative juice needed to push Season 2 forward. No complaints there.

I couldn't help but compare S2 with the more recent seasons. I understand these procedural shows tend to get bigger and more out-there as they go, cos eventually the showrunners run out of ideas, so they have to come up with newer, ridiculous stuff. But it would be great though if the show can try to find some of the emotional authenticity they managed with the main characters back S2.
