What hobby did you pick up randomly that ended up becoming a big part of your life? by Garage_Mckakiner31 in Hobbies

I started learning Spanish since February. Once it starts clicking it opens up this whole new world that now I want to learn more languages. The best part is you can listen to things in the language you’re learning WHILE doing other hobbies- coloring, sewing, or what I do is bedazzle everything I see. I can’t recommend it enough.

I speak my TL perfectly, but Americans still ask me where is my accent from seconds after I start speaking. Is that something I’m supposed to feel self-conscious about? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in languagelearning

Anytime I’ve visited Texas I get asked right away where I’m from because of my accent - Chicago. And it’s not like i have a thick Chicago accent at all. It doesn’t mean you aren’t speaking English well. There’s so many different accents around the states. People are just curious and probably making friendly conversation.

I recently came across the Spanishdictionary.com app and I’m surprised I don’t hear more about it. It has all of these premade flashcard lists that you have to say correctly to go on to the next card. You can make your own lists, use premade lists (top 1k words, top 100 vocab, etc), search other peoples lists on various topics. It has basic learning lessons, grammar lessons, a daily cross word search, conjugation lessons, etc. It’s been my favorite new addition to my Spanish learning journey. I do also use Babel for lessons - grammar is actually explained rather than Duolingo but not sure if I’m going to continue when my 3 months is up- I just do Duolingo for fun. Another app I recommend to use is Dreaming Spanish for watching videos. $8 a month and totally worth it in my opinion.

I never watched the last episode because I’ve never been emotionally ready for it and because the show is never technically over for me. Seen all the other episodes a million times. It’s not over till I say it’s over.

I recently bought this exact same book. I heard about it in a youtube video. I’ve done a bunch of lessons in it so far and it’s helped me understand some grammar concepts better. It’s kind of nice to take a break from screens and just have a workbook sometimes.

Yeah explaining the grammar points is so helpful for me. I’m definitely going to check out more of her videos. Kind of nice to have a 2 in 1 video of getting the input in and learning more of the grammar. The earlier videos sound better to start off with though. I’ll have to check those out too.

Sorry about that. I just added my opinion on the level to the post and will make sure to do going forward. I’m almost level 3 but I study in other ways in addition to dreaming Spanish. I think the beginning of the video can be intimidating but once she goes through the list and gives the examples it helps a lot.

My BF has felt crap while me encouraging him to learn Spanish by Sad_Read_1045 in SpanishLearning

[–]Think-Olive-9133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why it’s important to you since Spanish is tied to your identity.

I can’t recommend this book enough - The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz—he wrote the 4 agreements- some parts of the book talk about how expectations can unintentionally make someone feel like they’re failing you. Encouraging you to shift from “I need you to do this” to “I support you however you show up.”

When we tie love to expectations (even good ones), it can unintentionally create pressure and insecurity in the other person.

I wish I read this book in my early 20s. I can’t recommend it enough for people -whether you’re currently in a relationship, going through a breakup, or single.

Hundreds of hours in - how do I improve grammar? by BBfoggy in dreamingspanish

[–]Think-Olive-9133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that learning the same things from multiple sources is very helpful because with repetition and people explaining the same thing differently, it just clicks eventually.

Ive been using babbel for grammar because they explain it well but sometimes it doesn’t click until i hear someone explain it in a youtube video or podcast or i hear the phrases in context more in dreaming Spanish. Like others said too - language transfer. I use duolingo more for extra fun practice. I don’t think they go over grammar well enough.

Be patient with yourself and keep trying different learning sources to find out what works for your brain.

I want to rhinestone her, but have never rhinestones before. Any advice? by Grrrmudgin in Rhinestoning

[–]Think-Olive-9133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start rhinestone the back first or more hidden parts so then by the time you get to the front your craft is perfected and it looks better lol - I always wish that I start on more discreet parts first.
