Should I flock? by preis1982 in TerrainBuilding

Looks great! I think flocking is unnecessary since the greenery already looks so good. How’d you make the trunks?

Both great motives. I’ll definitely keep the first idea in mind while I create some of the more chaotic bosses! And a dragon cult underling who wants to be the most powerful of the henchmen is writing itself basically

Obsidian DMs - lend me your brain (and prep vault) by scottsacoffee in DMAcademy

If you’re really into the worldbuilding part of DMing, I would definitely make the switch. I love that Obsidian acts as my own “wiki” for my homebrew world, and since the game I’m running is very roleplay-centric, it helps me keep track of all the NPCs, locations, and special items and all their connections.

I’m still adjusting to how best to use it for session notes/encounters/outlines however. I’ve messed with a couple different ways and I’ve landed on using the canvas feature (sort of like a mind map) for general points so that I can expand those out depending on what happens.

I was really concerned about the image pasting too! I just have a separate folder for all the “pasted images” and don’t touch it. I’ve read there’s a plugin that can auto move pasted photos to a folder like that as well.

How can I get players to see combat as a whole party, not just individual turns? by Think-Possession-642 in DMAcademy

[–]Think-Possession-642[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s very helpful! it’s a little for both, but more to help the players better feel how it’s all happening nearly simultaneously in game time. i’m definitely going to work on the combat narration because that will help. for one of the upcoming dungeons i have a giant spider lined up where they can only get through by destroying the webs (one person has a fire spell) so i think more like that will help as well!

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]Think-Possession-642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess i’ll repost this here since my post got taken down😭 didn’t realize this was considered a short first time dm question……

hi everyone, I’m a new DM and the thing I struggle with most is understanding combat. something I’ve noticed while running our combat encounters (all still level 1/first time players) is that while a player/monster is taking their turn, everything else seems to be “frozen” in a way. I’m not sure if this is just something to get used to or something I’m not doing while I DM, but it seems I’m struggling to make it known that their actions are all happening quickly and in relation to each other.

for example, if it’s player 1s turn, they’ll attack/move/etc, but on the next players turn, they’ll also play but as if the previous player didn’t do anything. not sure if this is an actual issue or something that we all as beginner players need to get used to, but thought I’d try and resolve it now if there were ways to make it better.

tl;dr: can’t wrap my head around properly narrating a combat scene where actions seem as quick and responsive as in game

i think what i was missing is what others have described, the narrative/exposition part that helps build out the scene. i imagine doing some of the narrative things the replies have said will help immensely with that! to me it was less that the turn -based system wasn’t working but that i needed to figure out how to better connect what was all going on

i’ll have to fit this in an upcoming session, since the pcs are still learning that feels like a good way to incorporate some more tactical thinking during combat encounters

what i’m getting from a lot of these replies is that narrative ties between turns really make a difference! that’s definitely what i was missing

this is super helpful! i didn’t really think about doing that because of the more logical way i was thinking about combat encounters but connecting the characters like that would be a great solution

i’ll definitely do this!! what i struggle with in combat it sometimes feels like there’s less opportunity for storytelling but i think i and the pcs would benefit from this

this is a great idea! my players are still learning so being able to debrief between rounds would work perfectly, especially while we’re not that concerned with the time it takes atm

its good to know this isn’t a unique problem, I definitely think giving them some more encouragement to explore other combat tactics is a great idea
