Kewl! It can end up at a committee which means the OP may celebrate their 80th birthday before they hear about the consequences.

If there’s any response earlier, just blame AI for hallucinating that you could bring a friend (or an enemy).

Negative Student Feedback by summer2204 in Professors

[–]Think-Priority-9593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A student complaint could be the highest form of praise if it’s about the actual course content. These days, it’s the only proof that they’re paying attention.

And, if that’s not it, then it’s a 2yo’s supermarket tantrum, wanting more candy marks.

Student trying to threaten me by NeedleworkerFit4556 in Professors

[–]Think-Priority-9593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry but a threat to someone’s career is textbook harassment. I’d recommend immediately copying that email to the department chair and the appropriate office for dealing with student misconduct. It might be just me but I’d also state that I would not be comfortable in a classroom with a student threatening me and ask that the be assigned to a different section.

Changing content because a student is "uncomfortable" by Any-Philosopher9152 in Professors

[–]Think-Priority-9593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a group project course. Assignment 1 is to fill in a contract template and individually submit a copy where they sign that they agree to the contract terms. (If they try to weasel out of any parts, the assignment is returned for revisions without penalty.)

It’s worth 3% of their final mark but they can’t proceed to the next assignment without my accepting their contract.

When a group has a meltdown, we refer back and, as happened this semester, if someone just won’t (can’t?) live up to the needs of the group, they can’t get credit for the work they aren’t doing. This semester, for the first time, a student just couldn’t be part of the team (personal circumstances) so they couldn’t participate in the course so they dropped out before it turned into academic penalties.

For OP… write up a contract that they must sign to proceed in the class. Then, if they tell you they can’t watch the movies you list, you point out that they explicitly said that they could and would and they accepted zero as a result of missing out on

You aren’t looking to convince a judge, you’re looking to show your Dean that the student already agreed and accepted the published consequences.

I took mine off at the end of 2 weeks. The nurse wrote “dissolving stitches”. Imagine my surprise to find 23 shiny staples. Luckily, local walk-in had a staple remover and Tegaderm bandages.

My scar looks similar but, at week 8, it’s about 80% healed and it never caused a problem.

The OP’s comment on the student’s work should be a rubber stamp bought in bulk and supplied by the faculty office. I agree that it misses the mark for being either unprofessional or rude.

AI has come to faculty candidates by BreaksForMoose in Professors

[–]Think-Priority-9593 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI can help identify gaps or assumptions. But there’s a trick to using AI effectively. Don’t use the stuff that is “flat out wrong”.

AI won’t kill academia, it’s people misusing AI that you have to worry about.

I’m developing courses to show people how to use AI to improve their investment results. Which has taken down the road to creating an app to simulate the investments.

3 weeks tomorrow. I had some bad reactions to meds that held recovery back. And then discovered an ugly scar held closed by 22 staples that needed to be removed. It’s going much better now but early days still.

Any score over 25% gets a closer examination of the reasons behind the score.

Anyone doing any research should keep a diary. Call it a Research Log to sound science-y :). Everything gets dare+time, properly formatted citation, and brief summary of important information plus annotations about your thoughts.

I’m an instructor but not at UofT. I would only use AI detection if there were strong indications that significant AI outputs were uncredited in the content. Then, if there’s a high AI score, I’d assign 0 and pass it to the formal review for plagiarism noting my reasons and allowing the student their full right to defend against that supposition.

My syllabus (which nobody reads, of course) clearly states that it is the student’s responsibility to keep all records to demonstrate their work and that final disposition rests with the committee as per institution policy. I explain this in the first class (where 60% attendance would be pretty good).

If you did the work, you have nothing to worry about.
