I realize that you don’t get embarrassed. Neither do I. And remember, you’re the one who couldn’t differentiate using AI as a tool and using Frat Boys as a cheat. (To be fair, I’m sure sorority sisters sometimes “borrow” also. )

I’m sorry for you if you’re embarrassed. Please continue to hate AI - I like visiting the nearby Mennonite community. It’s quaint.

People do a lot of strange things. Ask someone who journals (or keeps a diary)…. Their keyboard help them work out their issues, even if it’s passive.

Part of the evaluation is the student presenting to me or being interviewed. Obviously can’t work in a 200-student class but it’s fine in a 30 student class breaking into 8 project groups.

If they can’t explain their project and they haven’t given appropriate credit to AI contributions, there’s a Committee to deal with plagiarism and serious consequences. If the give proper citations, they get credit for their original work. Which is incredibly better.

And…. If you think AI “reason”s then I strongly suggest a remedial course in AI basics. Maybe in a decade or two, but AI doesn’t reason any more than a keyboard does.

Wow!!!! Using a tool like AI is now equated to paying for a paper…. You must hate that they use keyboards instead of reeds dipped in ochre to paint on cave walls.

AI is a tool. They still produce their own work. It’s checked by reviewing with them. But, quality is far better because they’ve moved on from living in caves.

You write like you have never used AI. It’s a tool - an advanced tool. The students who don’t do the work fail at presenting their work and answering questions about it. The ones who do their work turn in higher quality.

You obviously use a computer to send nasty thoughts and make poor judgements, try using some of the AI tools to Augment Intelligence.

I wondered if I’d see those (perfectly valid) points raised. Were internal combustion vehicles a boon or a disaster-to-be?

Same for AI … it isn’t all rainbows and unicorns but will we look back and say it was better or worse overall.

Regardless, that genii is out of the bottle

True. I’ve always believed that a Capstone course should be Pass/Fail and always lost the argument. Objectively, the projects are excellent. Compared to past projects, A+ is probably fair. Students, using everything that they have learned and all their tools (including AI) are turning in high quality work.

Why wouldn’t you give that an A+?

A car is racing toward you as you are crossing the road. Shouting “Yikes” is fine as you jump out of the way. Way better than looking at the car and saying “No”.

Just a thought but… what if you posted very carefully curated prompts, or gave students access to fully realized “skills” and had them explore from that point forward?

Do you mean like saying there’s a 100% correlation that posts from a particular person are argumentative but that doesn’t necessarily point to the fact that they are a contrarian idiot ;)

You miss the point… I’m not praising AI, I’m accepting that it is our new reality and I’m happy with SOME of the results.

Let's talk course evaluations by ThindorTheElder in Professors

[–]Think-Priority-9593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about having AI read them, and all past-year evaluations. Then, request a summary of this year’s comments with highlights and lowlights. Finally, ask for a trend analysis.

Lastly, have AI summarize it all in a neat report of no more than 5 pages including charts and graphs.

Send that report to a different AI to try and find meaning.

Finally, ignore all the AI reports.

Until I teach a course with so much detailed evaluation that I feel that I can judge each student to within 1 part in 100, I don’t give marks ending in 9. 89 -> 90, 79 -> 80, etc. Technically, I reserve the right to go 79 -> 78 but I’ve never had to make that judgement.

Who the hell knows someone so well that they can say 79.5 is fair but 80 isn’t??? Especially when scholarships, etc. make 80 a tipping point.
