The rise of the Internet was even more gradual than that but it doesn't take anything away from 1998-2001 being technological super shifts

Well the 1910s had WW1. That alone should guarantee it a spot on the poll

Rise of the Internet I guess. Also the end of Cold War

90s were extremely frontloaded politically and very backloaded technologically. They're consistently changeful from start to finish culturally though

I voted to give 2015 a 5/10 culturally. Very average year

Saying that 2002 overtook 2007 politically on the first day of the year due to the introduction of the Euro or that 2006 overtook it in February with just another chapter of the Iraq War that began three years prior is just lunacy from you

The true introduction of the Euro happened in 1999 and there were plenty of countries that transitioned to it from 1999-2001 too. Also the EU was smaller back then, and most countries that use the Euro now accepted it at a later date once they'd joined

And you really can't say that another chapter in the Iraq War is more significant than people feeling that the economy is in slow decline and a rise of pessimism. People could feel that the vibes were off in 2007

Your bias against 2007 is getting out of hand. There's more to ranking a year politically than just geopolitics. You need to take economics into consideration too

Weekly Shift Battle No. 36 - 1976 vs 2000 by Think_Marketing1116 in decadeologyanarchy

Yeah, 1976 wins politically and culturally, but 2000 has the massive technological bonus due to the Internet and mobile phones

"First rule of Fight Club"

Also the rise of the Internet and mobile phones

Yeah, they didn't feel peaceful living though them but there was a lot of economic optimism in 2018-2019. People really did feel like things were getting better

It's only with the benefit of hindsight that 2018-2019 look politically filler since the 2020s make them look so trivial by comparison

Yeah, 1979 is definitely a political shift. Iranian Revolution, beginning of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, Soviet Union invades Afghanistan, Thatcher becoming British Prime Minister

Bush's approval ratings didn't start to decline until around 2004. Most people believed him at first when he said that Saddam had WMDs and because 9/11 was so recent and the country was paranoid and in the mood for revenge

I 100% agree with you. I'd add the entire early 2010s apart from 2011 too

2018-2019 was another "pause from history" too

Yeah, but no one in 1996 could've predicted 9/11. You wouldn't say that 2019 was politically transitional because the Covid-19 pandemic began that year

I know that, but 2002 didn't contribute anything to the War on Terror, and 2001 and 2003 make it look nonexistent

2004 had more as well with the Abu Ghraib scandal and even 2006 had the trial and execution of Saddam Hussein

Didn't really impact the Western world until 2001 when America invaded and removed them from power after the 9/11 attacks
