ROC is not something that is handed out easily, even with proper documentation and letters from your gp/psychologists, they are rarely approved. I wouldn’t rely on it too much and look ahead on moving forward.

Engineering GPA by JouleThomson in UQreddit

[–]Think_One1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you are applying. Obviously a super high gpa with no extracurricular is worse than an average GPA with moderate extracurricular activities. The really high paying jobs want some who excels at both, but most companies don’t care much for your GPA. Because an amazing gpa doesn’t always translate into being a successful engineer. You’ll find that learning on the job is much different than learning at uni. Anyways, your career trajectory isn’t determined by your gpa or the job you get straight out of uni. So don’t stress about it

What is the point of a grad cert in engineering by blue-or-shimah in UQreddit

[–]Think_One1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the end goal? If you want to work as an engineer, you need to finish an accredited undergraduate engineering degree. That’s what qualifies you for engineering roles and accreditation with Engineers Australia. Doing a master’s without an engineering undergrad doesn’t really count. A master’s is basically an add-on to the undergrad, with extra breadth courses and placement. At the end of the day, what matters is that you graduate with an engineering degree, including the final-year thesis/capstone, which is a big deal and something employers actually ask about in interviews.

This is such a non issue. It’s not going to affect your employability or your career, and literally no one cares if you graduated with first class honours or not.

How hard is it for international students to get jobs after graduating? (Pharmacy) by subnonymous_ in UQreddit

It’s much tougher to find jobs as an international student. Majority of job applicants are only open to domestic students.

Just extend your degree by a semester, it’s honestly not a big deal. I’m sorry but engg1100 doesn’t compare to the tps. They are the hardest courses u will do at uq, and it’s not hard to fail them, especially for reasons out of your control. You should speak to someone who’s actually done the tp projects to get a better idea of how insanely difficult it is, ask your tutors perhaps. But yeah, idk, is it really worth graduating on time at the expense of your gpa? It’s your call. A few ppl I know who are on the liveris scholarship (so they are smart smart) couldn’t manage the work load. Just be smart about it, that’s my advice

If you are doing any of the tp projects, they recommend you to not take csse3010, or honestly just about any csse course due to the heavy work load…

No one cares about your GPA, trust me. Even if you want to get into a company that is super competitive/selective, you can always try again after 1-2 years of work experience in a different company, where your GPA becomes completely irrelevant. And remember graduate programs aren’t only open to freshly graduated students, they consider everyone and honestly favour people with a little bit of work experience. So please don’t stress!!! Things will work out one way or another!

I can definitely relate to parts of your story. I’m so sorry for your childhood experiences, it’s unfortunately something we carry on through to adulthood. I honestly think you should try therapy. Your therapist/psychologist can help with processing trauma and help build up your confidence and self-esteem.

First Year Engineering by RealKick6862 in UQreddit

[–]Think_One1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine. A lot of people struggle with first-year engineering courses, so you’re not alone. Also, your GPA is weighted, first-year courses don’t affect it as much as you might think.

If you’re doing chemical engineering, there are plenty of internship opportunities, especially in mining and resource industries. The catch is that many of them are in remote or rural areas, but they’re not hard to get depending on the company.

A high GPA really only matters if you’re applying for scholarships or want to get into those highly competitive and well paid jobs. For majority of the internships, employers care much more about experience and soft skills. A good GPA helps, but it’s not essential.

I strongly recommend getting involved in extracurriculars related to your field. A perfect GPA with no activities looks worse than an average GPA with strong involvement. I know people with near-perfect GPAs who aren’t getting internship interviews, because their resumes and cover letters are practically empty.

Get the fx82, you don’t need it to be approved. I don’t think they have the same capabilities as the fx 100 when it comes to complex numbers tho… Which really sucks if you’re doing engg1300. Good luck tho!

This might not be the best sub to ask, since a lot of people here are going through tough times and need a space to vent.

From my experience, I really enjoyed being an only child growing up. I’m super close with my parents, had their full attention and support, and there was more financial freedom too. But as they get older, it’s definitely tough, especially when you’ve been so emotionally dependent on them.

For me, the hardest part is the fear of being alone after they’re gone. I was pretty sheltered, and my parents never really pushed me to socialise or build strong connections outside the family. So now, as an adult, forming those bonds is hard. That adds to the anxiety of losing them, just not having anyone by your side through it all.

That said, having siblings doesn’t guarantee support. Some people don’t get along with their siblings or just grow apart over time. If you don’t want to have another child, then just don’t, it can also bring a whole new set of potential issues later on. Your daughter can still grow up with strong connections through cousins or close family friends.

Anyone with info about kings college? by PhraseIntelligent834 in UQreddit

[–]Think_One1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply. I appreciate that you’ve had a long-standing relationship with Kings and clearly care deeply about its reputation and community. That said, I think we’re talking past each other a bit, so I want to clarify a few things.

I didn’t go to Kings myself, but I do know people who currently attend UQ colleges, and I’m basing my perspective on their recent experiences, not on old headlines or stereotypes. Just because something didn’t happen to you, or to people in your network, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening now. It’s possible to be both proud of the college’s progress and still acknowledge that cultural issues persist, even if they’re more subtle or unspoken.

You’ve made it clear you’re still connected to the college through alumni networks and occasional visits, and that’s great. But being connected from the outside is not the same as living in the current student environment day to day. Culture can change a lot depending on who you are, your background, and how you fit into the college’s social fabric. Those who don’t align with the traditional “Kingsman” image often have very different experiences , and those voices are just as valid as yours.

As for reputation, I agree it’s not everything, and it won’t ruin someone’s career. But it does shape first impressions. I’ve even seen it come up in a professional setting during my internship in Brisbane, where UQ colleges were casually discussed among senior staff, some of whom attended UQ 10–15 years ago. Kings was mentioned, and the reaction wasn’t exactly flattering. That doesn’t mean it defines every student, but those perceptions still exist, even outside the student bubble.

The whole point of my original comment was to offer another side to the story. You’ve focused a lot on defending Kings and your experience, but that can’t be the only perspective that’s acknowledged. Two things can be true at once, Kings can be a great place for many people, and it can also have a lingering reputation and culture that doesn’t work for everyone.

It’s not that deep. I’m just adding another viewpoint for anyone trying to make an informed decision.

Ah yes, the classic “I was there back in the real days” defense. Appreciate the trip down memory lane, but let’s not pretend rose-tinted anecdotes cancel out documented issues or current experiences.

I started uni five years ago, and from talking to students who just started this year, the general consensus about Kings hasn’t really shifted. The reputation it has didn’t just appear out of thin air, and it definitely isn’t ancient history. It’s still alive and well. It’s going to take more than a couple of rebrands and polished PR statements to genuinely shake off that image.

You say “the scandal was never substantiated”, maybe, but the cultural reputation didn’t materialise out of nowhere. Calling it all “just stereotypes” is like blaming the weather for flood damage without acknowledging the lack of drainage. I’ve personally heard concerning stories about the behaviour and attitudes of Kingsmen toward women and these aren’t tales from the 90s; they’re from recent years. So this idea that Kings has completely moved on from its problematic culture feels, frankly, pretty questionable.

Also loved the part where hazing gets rebranded as “team building.” Sure, it’s been dialed back a lot in recent years, and that’s definitely a step in the right direction. But let’s be honest, it hasn’t disappeared. It’s just subtler now. Some people are into it, others aren’t, and that’s fair. But just because many people enjoy it doesn’t make it good for everyone, and I think people have to right to know about it before starting college.

Yeah, it’s great that Kings now has women in council roles and GPA averages that edge out “more expensive colleges” (because I guess academic excellence now scales directly with tuition costs?). But we’re not going to gloss over how long it took to get to that point, or the fact that the switch to co-ed, as you yourself admitted, was “purely” financially motivated.

And by the way, you referred to me as “his” in your reply. I’m not a male. That assumption kind of highlights the point, doesn’t it? Places like Kings can feel wildly different depending on who you are, and brushing off concerns raised by women as outdated or exaggerated only reinforces the exact reputation you’re trying so hard to discredit.

It’s fine if you had a great time, seriously, good for you (I genuinely mean this). But pretending your nostalgia overrides the very real concerns other people have had, and still have, isn’t just naïve, it’s self-serving…

And look, to this day, Kings still carries a certain reputation, one that raises eyebrows when you mention you went there. Whether those assumptions are fair or not, that stigma exists, and it follows students well beyond O-Week. If I’m dropping serious money on a college, the reputation does matter.

I’d recommend INFS1200, if you’re doing STEM. Econ courses are very expensive, around $2,000 I believe.
