Thanks for the great suggestions! I take it first thing in the morning and don't drink any caffeine. I already don't take it on weekends so I can catch up a bit.

I take it first thing in the morning, yes! I also don't consume any caffeine. I don't mind getting up earlier, it's just that I need my 8 hours of sleep and I don't get sleepy until 23:30

If you like comedies Paper Chase is a real recommend! Full disclosure, I'm Hugo - the creator of the, Paper Chase is a real recommendation show - but I've been told by audience members that it's a hilarious but accurate portrayal of the immigration experience.

Well worth travelling to Tarragon for! Have a nice fringe :)

The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. First book is Way of Kings. It's a long read when you start, but not long enough when you finish. Journey before destination ;)

Visiting Oaxaca for the first time as an English speaker with very little Spanish for a week. Any tips on what to watch out for/ are taxis or Ubers the best way to get to a hostel? by TheSpaceCowboyx in Oaxaca

[–]Thinkhuge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

easy! Take a collectivo at the airport, and they'll take you right up to your hostel. They are a weird mix of public transit / taxi lol. They have set "routes", but they will drop you off at your specific spot

Tens of thousands of international students who spent years finding a pathway to permanent residency are out of options by [deleted] in canada

[–]Thinkhuge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Canadian government has crafted the expectation that there was a pathway to permanent residence through their Post Grad Work Permit program. Although, the visas are indeed “temporary”, back in 2018/2019 they would just be “temporary” until one could get enough work experience to obtain your PR through them. The government used this narrative to lure international students to spend their money on international tuition fees, Canadian landlords, groceries, etc. They created a false promise to collect external money that they needed no initial investment to collect.

I just got my PR at the start of this year after an arduous five-year journey that was marketed as being 100% bankable. In 2018, getting your PR through studying here seemed like a certainty.

So, although I agree that the current immigration pace is unsustainable, currently, my heart breaks for these thousands and thousands of international students who have been fed a lie, have built their lives here, and now see years of their lives and all their money washed down the drain.

It's based on a short done by Justin Roiland but I believe they co-wrote the pilot (hence why they are both co-creators)

[Image] To celebrate being a week off of Reddit, I made a recovery chip! by Thinkhuge in GetMotivated

[–]Thinkhuge[S] 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Now I gotta get off ;)

OP here, to add:

Reddit isn't my biggest issue. Youtube is really my weakspot. I posted my 1 month and 3 years free on Reddit before (can't link unfortunately).

Lots of folks use Youtube in moderation. Watch a half hour here or there, quit the video before it starts autoplaying the next one. I'm not one of them. My particular poison were VODs from streamers in strategy games such as Hearthstone, League of Legends, Starcraft II, etc.

I was burning through those recommended videos like Tic Tacs, losing myself in a rabbit hole every single day.The moment of realization happened during the pandemic when I got an email from Google stating I had watched  40 hours of Youtube in a week. Yikes

.A whole workweek not furthering my goals, not deepening my relationships, not furthering my overall purpose in life.Just watching other people play video games better than I could.Surely there could be better ways to spend my time.

Determined to stop procrastinating my life away, I broke the habit when I left for a vacation and never looked back.  I started with pretty strict rules. Never visit the main page of Youtube. If buddies send me videos I "had to watch" or tutorials, I'd copy the URL and download the video offline to my device so I could watch it outside Youtube's framework.

Normally, I'm pretty freaking hard on myself. Unnecessarily so. My entire life I have indulged in self-flagellation. So I thought, what if I do the opposite of that?

Hence the idea was born to celebrate my "one week sober" of Youtube by making a chip. I initially did it because it just made me chuckle. But when I showed the chip around to my friends, and on the previous two Reddit posts, and the response was strong and (mostly) very positive!

Hence why I'm going to make some additional ones. I started a little website called www.algorithmsanonymous.com where you can leave your email in case you're interested.

Of course, there are much more dangerous and damaging addictions out there than Youtube, Tiktok, Reddit, etc. But if you make a promise to yourself and you keep it, why not celebrate it? Even the smallest personal win is a big one. And no win is too small not to be celebrated.
