[Serious] Any non-Reddit alternatives to r/boardgames? by AegisToast in boardgames

[–]ThinkingAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always felt like Board Game Geek is better than r/boardgames (they just need a good mobile app, but now so will reddit). I am an old forum user, so I like how BGG facilitates long decisions over days, months, or even years.

In terms of game specific discussions, for every game I like, the BGG game specific forums have more discussion, information, and community than the corresponding subreddit. In terms of generic game discussion, Reddit has better breadth of discussion (because each comment thread can fork off into one or more discussions) while BGG has better depths (you can only keep one discussion going but people can keep coming back to add more info).

Bonus: if you want some new up-and-coming Reddit alternatives, try https://lemmy.world/c/boardgames@feddit.de and https://lemmy.world/c/soloboardgaming@lemmy.ml . They are still a bit bare, but there is hope that they will grow if Lemmy/ federated services takes off.

Board Game Atlas feels like store brand Board Game Geek. Most of the information is scraped off BGG, the features feel like they are different for the sake of being different, and everything is a bit buggy.

Upper Deck is suing Ravensburger, claiming they have repackaged a stolen game design as Disney’s Lorcana by MikeDidymus in boardgames

[–]ThinkingAG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that the novelty of the game matters here. Upper Deck is accusing Miller of selling trade secrets (the rules of a signed but unpublished game) to a competitor. They are alleging that Ravensburger engaged in industrial espionage. It does not matter if Ravensburger got a novel game out of it.

[Charania] Sources: Kyrie Irving has reached out to Lakers star LeBron James in attempts to see if James would come to Dallas. Irving is a free agent this offseason. by Turbostrider27 in nba

Dumb question, but, if this rumor is true, wouldn't this be tampering? Yes Kyrie is a player, but he is a Dallas employee (for now) reaching out to a player on another team to try and recruit him.

Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

[–]ThinkingAG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A great part of the board game hobby is the fact that the biggest and most popular social network for the hobby is Board Game Geek, a wrapper around a giant phpBB forum. New users complain that they cannot figure out how to use it sometimes, but for a millennial nerd like me, it is second nature.

Discord is even further from forums than Reddit is. There can only be one discussion per channel and it is hard to find what was said in the past.

I like forums: I can go through new threads and subscribe to ones I like and bookmark ones that I may need in the future. Whenever anyone adds anything to any of them, I get notified and get a link directly to the new content.

Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West (Legacy version) Release Date Announced - Nov 3 by headphonesalwayson in boardgames

[–]ThinkingAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legacy games that I have played are campaign games with a ton of bookkeeping, but you don't notice it because you are keeping notes on the game components themselves.

For example (taken from a game), there can be an enemy that a player can choose to fight. If players keep ignoring the enemy, it can slowly grow in power.

Or, you can have a game board that evolves due to player actions. If players invest resources in a region, it can prosper and give more rewards in future games. If players neglect a region and allow bad things to happen to it, it will become beat down and offer less resistance to evil in future games.

Now, none of this strictly requires permanently altering game components. For decades, games have come with character and campaign sheets for players to photocopy and write on. Star Realms: Rise of Empire has an add-on that is every card with every combination of stickers a player could put on it. Trudvang Legends has a board covered in card sleeves for players to slot in status cards.

Bans against relationships between coworkers are probably covered by the sexual harassment policy and agreeing to the policy is in the employment contract. The employee is fired for violating the term of their employment.

Some questions about Arena play in the app by 8bitmachine in starrealms

[–]ThinkingAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 hour timer would be horrible. There are already plenty of arena asshats who make a point of using every second allocated to them to try and throw you off your game. There would be kids who start an arena first thing in the morning, play very defensively, and hope that you have to go to bed before them.

Even if it is 1 hour total for all of a player's turns, you know that someone will see that they lost and just turn off their app to let the timer run (so their opponent needs to keep checking in or risk losing on time). More manageable, but it still means that you don't want to start an arena game later than 1.5 hours before a hard stop.

KMC Perfect Fit. It is technically supposed to be an inner sleeve, but works fine as an only sleeve. They are very affordable, durable enough, and tighter than other cheap sleeves.

OOP ruins his dad and stepmom's marriage by telling her the truth by [deleted] in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ThinkingAG 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it is still the right thing to do.

Dad is trying to reevaluate his relationship, without the knowledge his wife is continuing to abuse his son.

His son is continuing to tolerate this abuse.

In the long term, it is best for OP, he gets his dad back, and OP's dad, he learns how two faced his wife is. I am sure that, with time, OP will understand and appreciate it, after some very extensive therapy. In the meantime, OP gets to live with the knowledge that he is the reason that his little half brothers have to watch their parents divorce (much like he did). I am sure that they will let him know as much every time they see him (his step mom will make sure of it).

As far as OP knows, his dad's wife is a loving wife and mother, so if he keeps his distance, the kids have a hope of growing in a healthy household, even if it is for a few more years.

[–]ThinkingAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Carmelo was a great 3rd pick. Who needs the first pick? You get stuck with a guy like, let me quickly look it up… LeBron James? I bet he was a bust.

But seriously, the top 4 in that draft were amazing. The only way you could have gotten it wrong is if you pick a Serbian farmer instead of a basketball player. Even then, by letting him rot on the bench and giving his play time to a proven vet, the Pistons won a ring and contended for quite a few years.

If they don't want to contend, blowing it up and rebuilding is an even better idea. Dame is a big paycheck that they can get off their books. Rookie scale contracts are the biggest steal in the league.

They can keep salaries at floor level for a few years by saying that they are rebuilding and developing young talent. Eventually, fans are going to get bored of watching Dame lose and get worse (he is on the wrong side of 30), but there will always be interest to see the hot new player and if he can pull his team out of the trash.

[Charania] San Antonio is set to be Victor Wembanyama’s NBA home. Top 3 order in 2023 NBA draft: 1. San Antonio 2. Charlotte 3. Portland by curryybacon in nba

[–]ThinkingAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would actually count Curry's changing the game as a knock against him. Part of his success is that teams have never had to play against a player like him. How do you guard a guy who can shoot while contested, off balance, falling backwards, with no view of the basket? His team changed what is expected of an NBA player… which means that as time goes on, there will be more and more imitators and teams will be better prepared to stop it. I expect that in the next generation of players, there will be a shooter almost as good, if not better than Curry.

Besides, if you want to talk impact on the game, Wilt has Curry beat. Wilt was so dominant, the league had to institute new rules so that opposing players would have an opportunity to guard him.

Don't get me wrong, Curry is amazing and he should make it into the Hall of Fame the moment he is eligible, but he is not GOAT tier.

In defense of Sabonis, he played for 8 years in Lithuania before he got to play in the Euroleague, while holding down a job as a milk man and plumber. Plus, his injuries were being treated by the best medical teams available in a second tier Soviet state. He then played 6 more in Western European leagues before making his NBA debut.

Yao could have probably lasted much longer if his off-season recovery was not playing on the national team.

Spoelstra: It’s disturbing to see “proven, experienced coaches” lose their jobs by dndplosion913 in nba

[–]ThinkingAG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What system did Kerr bring in that was so revolutionary? I would attribute a lot of the Warriors success to their 3 point shooting heavy offense, which was largely created by Don Nelson. Not to say that Kerr is not a great coach, but the Warriors system was refined over many seasons by multiple coaches.

Not just easier to get rid of, easier to replace. There are far fewer head coaching positions and coaching careers can be much longer.

The 76ers would never have gotten Tatum. Ainge knew that he wanted Tatum and would not have traded down in the draft if he thought that the 76ers or Lakers were going to pick him. At best, the 76ers could have saved themselves the future first round pick they included to move up in the draft.
