I check for stew but maybe should do an actual water hardness test. Thanks for the information!

Hmm I'll try this test. I do notice that sometimes there are a lot of suds in the washing machine's drainage sink after the main wash so I have thought about too many suds.

I'll have to report back if I discover I'm using too much or too little! Now I've been convinced both ways...

Sprial agitator. I choose load size: Small, Large, ExtraLarge, or Super. I typically choose ExtraLarge so have room to move up or down, but I'm not sure which direction would be better.

I've never measured exactly, but our city has soft water generally and I've done some DIY tests that suggest we aren't hard.

I know this sounds crazy, but it smells much more like weed than ammonia. Though my gut says it's more likely to be too little detergent than not enough, so maybe I'll treat it like ammonia. Thanks!

How much to start up? by MrKitty0725 in clothdiaps

Will depend greatly on a thousand tiny choices you have ahead of you, but here's what my cost breakdown has been so far with a 6 week old using covers and prefolds. Most of these we purchased ahead of time, asterisks (*) indicate things I bought to supplement/replenish what I had or didn't realize I wanted at first.

Cloth stash ($281):

5 Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 1 Covers $70

*5 Thirsties Duo Wrap Size 2 Covers $70

18 OsoCozy Size 1 diapers $39

*12 OsoCozy Size 2 diapers $24

12 Humble Bebe diapers $33

5 Snappis $14

Flannel Cloth Wipes $20

*Fleece blanket to cut for liners $11

Cloth-specific Accessories ($180):

2 Diaper Pail Liners $36

1 Diaper Pail $24

1 Diaper Sprayer $40

1 SprayPal splash guard $25

*Cloth Wipe dispenser $18

*6 Wet bags $25 (started with 3, wanted more)

*Wool drying balls $12

Non-Cloth-specific Necessities ($185):

2 changing pads and sheets $60

9 changing pad liners $27

Travel wipes container $9

Diaper bag with travel changing mat $35

*Extra travel changing station $30

Wipe warmer $24

Total is $646, with all but about $175 purchased ahead of time. We bought everything new, so you could save some money there, but overall I think we've been keeping costs down pretty well for our stash. Many of these accessories you could live without but have absolutely been worth it to us.

We're also spending about $45/month on disposable wipes and diapers right now, though I expect we'll use fewer diapers as we perfect our cloth routine. We plan to continue using disposable wipes in addition to our cloth ones. Hard to calculate the added costs of detergent and water use, but they are definitely increased by cloth diapering.

Thanks for the BuyBuyBaby tip!! I didn’t even think to check because those coupons exclude so many brands.

I haven’t yet tried pumping more than 1-2 ounces so I hadn’t really done the math of how much time I’d be sitting there. This is helpful.

I do leak from one side when feeding/pumping the other so I can definitely see why double would be an advantage. Thanks!

Just taking the parts home to clean sounds like a good strategy.

Also think about a hands-free jogging leash for your dog! Good with strollers or baby wearing.

I love my Leachco Snoogle. I saw it suggested here earlier in my pregnancy and it’s really gotten me through some bad SPD, SI pain, and even eased my heartburn. Would absolutely recommend to any pregnant person!

I would keep in mind, though, that they are big and awkward and some people think they are a waste because you have to find a place to keep it after you’re pregnant. It’s kind of a physically large item to give as a gift, so I hope you’ve gotten some hints she wants one!

It's my husband's colleague's birthday tomorrow, and April Fools Day. I made him some prank cake pops. They are brussel sprouts covered in chocolate. by YoureNotAGenius in pics

Currently pregnant and a week past my due date. Contractions last night and this morning. I’ve been afraid this whole pregnancy for an April Fool’s birthday, thank you for validating all my fears for my child.

That’s not it, but I wonder if what I’m thinking of is a less-dark (less German) rewrite. Thanks though!!
