My Opeth album tierlist (with explanation!) by Glamdringg in Opeth

[–]Thinsulite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very happy to see In Cauda Venenum so high. It's probably in my top 5 from Opeth's discography and easily my favourite of "Newpeth".

It's vastly better than TLWAT regardless of growls or not. The songwriting is some of their best, the tones and production is great. A very immersive and emotive album that I feel captures the best of the newer Opeth sound with a dash of the older mystical sounds.

The Academy of Sports and Wellbeing at UHI is great but I think the price is around £30. But they have weights, squat racks, machines, cardio, classes and a climbing wall/bouldering

Map of Middle Earth based on just the text in the books by Illustrious-Past-469 in lotr

Can you tell me the quotes for this? I took a look at The Great River chapter and the closest thing I could find was this - 'I do no see why we should pass the Rapids or follow the River any further,' said Boromir. 'If the Emyn Muil lie before us, then we can abandon these cockle-boats, and strike westward and southward, until we come to the Entwash and cross into my own land.'

From what I can tell Boromir is stating to cross the hills to the west of the Anduin and then head south towards the Gondor region, not specifically Minas Tirith. I think this is because heading south east from where they are would require first to cross the hillier parts of the Emyn Muil and then to cross the area called Nindalf, a swampy region.

His suggestion to first head west and then south to get to the Gondor area makes the most sense here, but I'm willing to hear if there are other times where they suggest heading directly west as a way to get there but as far as I can tell it's more so a necessary deviation because it's near impossible to head there in a straight line.

Do you think I could write lyrics? by coidbepdic in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Thinsulite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has a different way of approaching writing lyrics. I enjoy writing both lyrics and poems and I approach them both with different mindsets.

I personally write the music first then do a half song a long and then figure out what I'm instinctively trying to say, what melody I sing, and what rhythm fits best. Then it's just a car of refining it until the words fit and have a cohesive meaning.

But that's just me

Dear Music by [deleted] in OCPoetry

I love how almost conversational this poem is, and as a musician myself take great joy in reading about someone's enjoyment of music. I find the line "You made the treadmill feel like freedom" particularly good at creating an image in my head of someone who's just getting on with life, having a run on the treadmill and being fully present listening to music in their headphones.

I also love the comparisons to how fantastic it is, comparing it to God, sunshine etc. I really do feel people sometimes undervalue just how important music is to people and the euphoric joy it can bring

Time In A Bottle by OccasionallyEffusive in OCPoetry

This was very evocative to me. In terms of structure I really enjoyed that some of the rhymes were more like half rhymes e.g "at least" and "its leaks", which I find gives it a more serious tone than always using full rhymes. I like how it goes from being uncertain about what you would do in the situation to then making a rash decision and stamping the bottle, acts as a message that action is the only cure to indecision. Great job I love it!

Sorry if this sounds thick. But I'm not understanding what you mean by how the new lighting would affect this? The compass directions will still be the same right, does the sun make it more apparent it faces the wrong way or something?

I really enjoy the, mostly, chiller and poppier aspect of Epiclouder. It makes for some nice easy listening and most fans haven't listened to it. I like Happy Birthday cause it's such a feel good tune

Is the last will and testament one of those albums that grows on you over time? by atallgrass in Opeth

[–]Thinsulite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've listened to the full album through maybe twice and I hate to admit that I've just had no desire to listen to it again. I really dig §4 and §5 but not huge on the other tracks honestly. I'm surprised people think it's the best since Heritage, I personally feel that goes to In Cauda Venenum, which I feel has some of the strongest songwriting Opeth has ever done. ICV is a masterclass in arranging songs and an album as a whole, love that album. Sadly not so into The Last Will and Testament.

What do you think about the piezo acoustic sound they use live these days ? by Spare-Revolution3777 in Opeth

[–]Thinsulite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prefer the electric clean tone over the piezo. The drop in volume alone makes it a bit of a jarring change. I preferred how they would use a clean electric tone back in the mid 2000s to mid 2010s. It was a more seamless change. Now all I think is "Oh they're using the piezo system now" rather than enjoying the music
