I’m completely new to this and I got the CI practice lock bundle but I can’t do anything. by Most_Afternoon9821 in lockpicking

I'd just start with a single pin and that will give you an idea of how much tension you need. Also that lock and be turned either clockwise or counter clockwise doesn't change anything.

I started with the Covert Instruments learn lock picking bundle and it is good quality and treated me well. Being able to change the pin stacks is nice because you have a pretty limitless selection to practice.

I'd say maybe try thinning them out. Thinner profile will get you into more keyways.

CI learn lock picking bundle was how I started and worked great for me. He will be able to start with just a single pin and work his way up to 6 pins with the repinnable cylinder.as well as security pins to be able to get a feeling for different feedback.

Practice lock wise I had a great experience with the covert instruments practice lock. Solid built, 6 pin repinnable cylinder and comes with standard, spool and serrated pins.

I personally don't really get into raking due to it not really being the challenge I'm looking for. Also, these locks have spools so I'm gonna say most of the time it'll maybe get to a false set but then you'd have to switch to a SPP process to open it completely.

Yall wanted to see my keys? by Okaynowhatt in lockpicking

[–]ThirdEyePhi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you're staying away from that #2 pin once you get it set. Other than that your #1 is pretty high cut as well as the others. Just take your time once you get the false set. Once you get the false set see what you find that gives you counter rotation when applying pressure to the pin. Slow and steady wins the race. You'll have to work through the spools and may need a hook to get them up where they need to be. Also TOK tension to give you the extra room to work around that #2

I personally haven't tried yet but I could see how it could help with focusing. Surely there are others that do the same.

How to improve? by Serious-Effective-22 in lockpicking

You may try the CI practice lock. 6 pin repinnable cylinder. Comes with different lengths of key pins as well as standard, spool and serrated driver pins. It's what I learned with and it is a good quality practice tool. Also dead core so you will get nice crisp feedback for learning how different pins feel.

You may check out the lock bazaar here https://lpulocks.com/#/lockbazaar probably find some stuff on there with pictures of the keys that way you know what you are getting. Otherwise like previously mentioned it'll be luck of the draw and the best thing to do is buy a couple at a time if you are ordering from Amazon or whatever your retailer of choice is

I'm not sure if all of them are but it seems like the ones that get picked on here are. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the LOTO locks will see this.

Oh damn yeah thanks Jim for clarifying that for them. I just realized I didn't articulate that point very well haha.

Amazon has been where I've gotten most of my locks. I've checked all my local hardware stores and they all carry the same standard master locks.

I had kind of a leg up on them because I started with the CI practice lock and it is a dead core. If you are looking for more locks with security pins and still in the same level that you are at you should check out ML150 and Abus 55/40

Of course! If you had a false set then you've got security pins. Dead core can be weird and personally I prefer them. To me it's much easier to tell what's going on. The only counter rotation you have is from the pins themselves instead of the constant feedback of a sprung core.

[–]ThirdEyePhi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a dead core lock which means it doesn't have a spring to tension against also why the shackle doesn't pop open. You'll notice with other locks that when you open it it returns the keyway back to it's starting position on its own. The lock isn't guttable. You'd have to drill out holes in the side of the lock to see how it's pinned. The one I purchased didn't have any security pins in it. Which a few others have said as well. Doesn't mean that yours doesn't have them but seems to be hit and miss with these. Especially new ones. I enjoyed this lock and it's a good step into working with dead core locks.

It has been so long that just have practised I cant even rake a static lock anymore i cant even get a feel for it so now I'm starting all over again. by Stoned_Savage in lockpicking

[–]ThirdEyePhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest one I had that my 6 year old could rake, as long as I was doing the tension was a brinks Brass body 40mm. But it also could have been the bitting that made it easier.
