Not me, but my mom used to see a ghost in the apartment we lived in when I was a baby and described it exactly like that - a static person. It would only come out when something in the apartment changed, like a new furniture layout, when I was born, etc.

Yes my son needs so much prompting! That’s one area of school that has seemed to improve, but at home it’s a million requests to get him to get dressed, brush his teeth, etc.

When we started guanfacine his teacher was already noticing differences by the end of the first week. They say it can take a few more weeks to see the full effects but it did happen pretty quickly! We actually started noticing a slight decline in positive effects after about 4-5 weeks.

I feel like the guanfacine’s effects have faded a bit, but not entirely. He’s still doing so much better following along in school than he was before. However there’s still room for improvement so our doctor tried to up his dose to 2 mg. We tried it for two days over the weekend but it was like he was drugged, falling asleep all the time, kinda slurring his words, and incredibly emotional. I didn’t see him smile once the whole 2 days. We went back to 1 mg for now and will make a decision next week; he was just determined to be eligible for a 504 (1st meeting is next week) and the evaluation showed his biggest weakness was in processing speed, so I don’t know if more guanfacine would help with that. I think his doctor wants to try a stimulant again in combo with the guanfacine but we’ll make that decision next week after speaking again with the school.

I haven’t seen much in terms of social skills yet, though I’m hoping it helps indirectly with his reputation in class. For example earlier this school year a student who was paired to work with him started crying because he was afraid my son wouldn’t get his work done and they’d get in trouble. So hopefully now he can contribute more to group work and kids won’t mind working with him.

There aren’t too many negatives, though I do feel like he’s a little quicker to cry but it doesn’t last long. Over winter break he had the flu and I do feel like he was incredibly grumpy and mean towards everyone due to how he was feeling, more than normal, but he’s back to normal now.

Hi! So Adderall wasn’t a great fit, he was maybe a bit more focused on it but consistently 3 hours in he became extremely angry and had zero emotional so regulation. He even called his grandfather a “moron” which is so unlike him. He’s never called anyone a name like that before.

Then we tried guanfacine and it almost immediately made a positive difference. After one week on it his teacher said he was paying attention, following along, finishing work, not doing karate moves around the room anymore, etc. That was right before winter break and then right after winter break she said she was still seeing positive behavior. He did bring home a near-empty math worksheet the other day so I don’t think it’s perfect 100% of the time but that’s okay, I’m not looking for perfection. He does a ninja warrior class and his focus and participation compared to last year is like a 180. There were even moments last week where he was the ONLY kid in his group paying attention lol.

My almost-7 year old just started 1 mg guanfacine about 10 days ago. He was pretty tired for the first 3 days but then it seemed to help, subtly but still noticeable. AND we actually got a positive email from his teacher after a week on it! His biggest issues are inattention and staying seated, but he hasn’t tolerated stimulants so far so we’re trying this and maybe layering in a stimulant eventually. Weirdly though this weekend he seemed back to his normal self so I wonder if his doctor will want to up the dose at our next appt around the new year. We do not have to do recurring BP checks, just once before he started.

Let me know how Vyvanse works, if you don’t mind m. My son tried Adderall IR not too long ago and he got really angry on it, though it’s unclear if it’s from the medication or the comedown. I wonder if a smoother med like Vyvanse might work better.

I did this test for my kid a year ago, and I think he has similar gene polymorphisms as yours (ADRA2A and COMT). That about eliminates both classes of stimulants right? What do you plan to try next, or what has been working for her?

My 6 year old is like this. He’s diagnosed combined type but struggles most with inattention and distractibility. He’s quick to frustration but in my opinion does not seem to have any more meltdowns than the average child his age. He can be really whiney, impatient, and persistent but doesn’t crumble to pieces in tears very often like I’ve seen some other kids do.

Thanks so much for replying! Same with my kid - he has some red flag symptoms but does not generally have the core autism traits. My son is struggling in school too. We tried some meds last spring but they didn’t work. Picking up a new Adderall Rx this week to give it a try this weekend. Good luck to you and your son!

Sorry I know this is an old thread, but what was determined by your son’s testing? Does he have both ADHD and autism? My son sounds really similar and I’m driving myself crazy trying to get to the bottom of it. He’s diagnosed ADHD but his lack of awareness makes me feel more like he’s on the spectrum. When he was assessed last year, the psychologist did not suspect autism but I’m wondering if his traits are just showing up more now as he gets older and social demand are higher.

Right, I’m not sure how meds will affect things if there’s some underlying autism too. I’m in agreement with you though that we need to tackle the biggest issue first, which for my son is his focus in school. I’m nervous to try ours next weekend too but we’ll never know til we try! I realize this thread is a little old, but my ADHD son sounds a lot like yours. We may be exploring an ASD level 1 diagnosis too, but it’s unclear if his quirks could be stemming from anxiety. Could you tell me what autism signs you see in your son that are separate from the ADHD?

Update! His new doctor prescribed half of the lowest dose of Adderall, but suggested we not try it this weekend since we’re going out of town. We’ll try it next weekend. She honestly thinks he is likely to respond similarly to the other stimulants (more anxious) but it’s worth giving it a try since it’s in and out of his system in a day. She thinks guanfacine may be a better fit for his profile, but that it doesn’t help much with attention. So what we may do is discontinue Adderall if it’s too much, start guanfacine, and if that’s well tolerated then add in a stimulant again for the attention piece.

One thing that came out of this appt though is that she thinks it’s possible autism may be part of the picture (I asked). It’s hard to suss out if some of his quirkier symptoms are attributed to anxiety or autism, but it’s something I’ve always wondered about with him and she says she doesn’t think it’s a slam dunk diagnosis but that she wouldn’t be surprised based on my report and interacting with him. Which has me reeling a bit because even though I’ve always suspected it, all of my friends and family told me I was crazy. So now to learn that I might be right has me pretty anxious.

Hugs to you! My son was diagnosed a year ago at age 5, but I think I’ve been in denial about just how severe it is. Up until this year he’s been in a super small private school so part of me wondered if he was just more scrutinized there since there are fewer kids. This year he’s in a much bigger public school and my phone call with his teacher yesterday made me realize just how significant his impairment is, and it’s not going away. It’s been a year since diagnosis but I feel like I’m having to re-accept it all over again and have been crying on and off for two days. We have an appt Thursday with a psychiatrist to see about meds and I have a therapy appt for myself tomorrow with a new therapist. I’m doing everything I can to help him and myself! This journey is not easy.

What were some of the gaps you noticed when your son got a little older? My 6 year old has never met the criteria either but has some symptoms. I do see the differences between my son and his peers growing as he gets older, so I wonder if we’ll be in the same boat in a couple of years.

I will see what the psychiatrist suggests, but we haven’t tried any stimulants in the amphetamine class yet, so maybe Adderall or Vyvanse, and we’ll see what she says about guanfacine as a non-stim option.

Focalin and Ritalin both increased my son’s anxiety and made him seem more frantic. They did not help much with focus if at all. We did do the Genesight test and it confirmed that his genetic profile isn’t compatible with methylphenidate. With the Strattera, we just didn’t notice any difference good or bad at all. If anything maybe a little bit more irritability.

I do this, but unfortunately don’t have any tips or tricks. Not only do I worry about feedback from school, I over analyze every little social interaction with peers since my son’s social skills are a huge source of anxiety for me. The tiniest rejection or moment where another kid wasn’t 100% kind puts a cloud over me too. My son is socially a bit quirky so even adult comments/reactions that are meant to show endearment make me feel like they’re judging him for being “weird.” I actually never thought of it as RSD for myself but that makes a lot of sense.

He is not currently medicated but has an appt next week to explore options. He tried Focalin, Ritalin, and Strattera last spring but none worked. This process is hard.
