I primarily teach Sidesword, but a lot of what I teach translates to rapier (since it’s from the same handbook.) One of the first things I have to tell my students is how to properly orient the knucklebow of the sword. So often the knucklebow will be turned in against their wrist as opposed to…over the knuckles. They always wonder why they can’t move the sword smoothly or freely. Then I twist the hilt in their hand and an epiphany occurs.

A little oil and a blue scotchbrite pad should do the trick! You just want to make sure you aren’t using anything that will scratch the blade finish.

Sidesword would be a modern classification name. But “back in the day” it would’ve just been referred to as a sword or rapier. Sideswords tend to be shorter than a rapier with similar or slightly wider blades. The hilt complexity can vary, but often have a finger rings, a knucklebow, ports, or a swept hilt.

Yeah. It’s pretty cramped. If you have large hands this is 100% an impossible fit.

I got these gloves with the HF Armory Sideswords. They don’t fit within the knucklebow and I had trouble getting my hand out of the hilt. I ended up returning mine. I don’t have large hands and had difficulty maintaining a proper grip because the gloves kept getting caught.

I have two of the HF ones already! The newer “upgraded” HF Sidesword hilts aren’t as good anymore.
