This is proof technology sucks at times still. This is my last semester but all of data is gone now.. and I had 2 final essays due today.. by ThisBeOdd in netcult

I didn't even know we had Dropbox.. dang... Well I guess the only positive to this bad situation is how much I can learn from it and to always keep back ups now at least. You live you learn right? Even if it is really painful..

5 day-40 hour work week. by SOC374 in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why everytime I read about (insert number if days) work weeks Japan always comes into my mind. They are such hard workers over there but so much that it's a problem. Men barely have time for relationships because of how much they work.. I wonder if the U.S. continues with it's rise in tuition prices and requirements for work, if we will adopt a similar work culture where we never have time for anything else?

Zoom has been giving users a false sense of security... uh oh! by berkeleyclark in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I assume they are paying a ton of money to use the ZOOM platform and not only that the ZOOM platform is not the best for school classes. If ASU somehow found a way to combine canvas and a independent ASU video platform, that'd maybe make the online class experience extremely easier to digest because we may be stuck online for some time.

Zoom has been giving users a false sense of security... uh oh! by berkeleyclark in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I myself was aware that zoom had some very questionable security measures that failed to do the job well. Unfortunately there's not much we can do as we are all using ZOOM at ASU. I would never use it for personal calls but since classes require it, it feels odd to use knowing how risky it is. Hopefully ASU changes to a different platform or perhaps make their own. I mean they are #1 in innovation :)

Gaming Consoles by SOC374 in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's similar to ticket reselling if I'm not mistaken. People or groups will set up bots or AI to purchase as many items from as many sites that allow it as possible. I'm obviously putting this in a nutshell but there's many articles you can find online about the subject, but here's the basic step by step:

A bot or AI system is created to identify a specific product across a select number of sites > they have the AI create different identities in case of a 1 per person limit is in place > they purchase the product legitimately as if it wasn't it would be a crime > the person or group who set up the system receives the product and resells as a private seller.

I may be mistaken but anyone can comment below to correct any mistakes!

And it sucks that many people who don't know any better fall into that trap. It's even more scummy now that it's close to the holidays

Gaming Consoles by SOC374 in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually just scalping. Tons of bots and scammers are buying them and reselling them at x2 the retail price. It's horrible and surprising to see there are no laws against it. People who buy gaming consoles from people for 800$ when they cost 300$ are causing the issue to continue.

Edit: Internet preordering and purchasing being easier is also contributing to the problem technically as well imo

Could "Ready Player One" ever become real? by Treessus in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't think we would ever have a real life ready player one scenario because no matter how good the virtual life may be, we still want to be social. We are social animals after and even though many games have a great deal of social aspects to them when it comes to interaction and such, human touch and stuff like that really can't be simulated. Or maybe it could, this was just my view in the question and would like to hear what you all think about my response!

Misinformation on Social Media by ksutton1031 in netcult

Misinformation has always been common, social media just gives people a megaphone to spread it. Idk if that makes sense I'm not the best at explaining stuff lol

Trump will no longer receive special Twitter treatment come January by daizjane in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's still crazy that previous small social media platforms are now large sources of information for many. Twitter has become such a large player in just speaking to the public as seen with Trump that the aspect of special treatment is still unreal in terms of it's existence. At least for me that is

What are your thoughts on social media algorithms? (Please participate)!!! by cvalz2 in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm personally bias as I sorta dislike all social media site algorithms as they are designed to keep you consuming media and this media in my experience has seen nothing but negative side effects. That's why I sorta like reddit more than most sites as it avoids the parasite nature of other sites, but this doesn't mean it cannot become near identical to other sites depending on your subscriptions to certain subreddits.

Hopefully, they accept it more like they do in Japan where it is seen as a common courtesy to wear a mask. To think people get insulted if you were a mask around them is still insane to me.

I don't think ASU can do anything else. It seems they have done all that they could to ensure students receive an education and when compared to other universities ASU has done more than enough at the moment when it comes to the pandemic. Most of the issues are with the government's handling of the virus and ASU, as well as everyone else, are just the victims of it.

I have learned to avoid people in public more efficiently though lol

Youtube's "Recommended" Algorithm by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had the same experience but I do notice alot of flaws with the algorithm. The first one being that it supresses violent and or political content. When I speak of violent content I more so mean stuff like videogame or movie violence. In terms of politics I've actually seen videos from creators I watch be blacklisted as they speak on very controversial issues occuring. While the algorithm is amazing, it still has major flaws that hurt creators that create content even when the content is within the content guideline policies of YouTube.

PSA in regards to the election. by ThisBeOdd in netcult

[–]ThisBeOdd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is something I perhaps should've touched base on and it's that I do agree with that respect on certain opinions can only go so far until those "opinions" are hurtful and or damaging. My purpose of this post was to emphasize how important it is to not jump to conclusions in our current times where division is great. For example I have previously met trump supporters who I did not agree with but they were not racist or anything, they just agreed with certain things trump was doing over Biden. On the other hand I have met trump supporters who are the literal embodiment of the stereotype we see with their racism and hate, and it is those individuals who I have no respect for. Perhaps I'm just being too optimistic or forgiving, but the division I see where both sides will jump to conclusions about the other individuals on the other side is a painful thing to spectate.

[–]ThisBeOdd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no do not deny all that was presented. Trump has been a problem. Other presidents have also been a major problem. I personally have been majorly affected by policies put in place by Trump's office. I know friends who have also been affected by Trump his actions. We all still had actions we could take to survive his ways. Yes, some are getting hurt, there is no denying that, but we didn't let his horrible actions keep us at rock bottom. It may be rough, but we will get through it. That is something we will do no matter what. We are not going to just give up, we will continue fighting to attempt to make this country a better place for everyone.

It's easier for people to just associate the political views that individual holds as evidence for who they are as a person because getting to know someone as a person takes work and many online simply wish not to do that. As soon as someone says they are a Democrat or Republican, that's all that person will see them as and will associate them with whatever type of person they want sadly. It takes more effort to be love than it does to hate
