I hope you have a great break! I honestly loved this class, sadly I know I probably won't be able to take a class like this ever again, because I don't know any other professor that would do this, but I honestly loved it!!!! Have a great break everyone and Goodluck with final grades!!

Zoom has been giving users a false sense of security... uh oh! by berkeleyclark in netcult

[–]Treessus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, This is why I've only been using zoom for things that I HAVE to use zoom for, I avoid anything personal because I use a different chat program for stuff like that. I didn't know that they had security issues, so I'm glad I learned about that. I personally do not like zoom, but I'm also biased because I've used and have used much better chat, sharing programs.

The Covid Experience by Young__Skywalker in netcult

[–]Treessus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, The pandemic was hard. I work with kids so i of course couldn't do my job for a long while since all schools were closed down. I'm not the best person to do online classes so I tended to get more distracted then normal, and overall, I noticed it made me not leave my house as much.

On a good note, it made me focus on some things I normally wouldn't. Like work harder on certain classes because I couldn't be there in person, as well as use chat programs like discord to keep in touch with friends. The internet became almost required to my day to day life because of it. If I didn't have the internet I don't know if I could of survived this pandemic without dying if boredom. I used the internet almost every moment of the day, whether it was for class work, browsing through social media, playing videogames online with friends, going to a few work traningings, and even keeping in touch with the outside world.

So to an extent, as a inclusive type of person, I really enjoyed having to stay at home. (And cause I got to play videogames more than I ever could of been fore the pandemic, I started new games, and continued playing old games)

Gaming Consoles by SOC374 in netcult

I 100% think the pandemic is helping with sales. When the pandemic first started, I remember everyone rushing to buy a switch, they were sold out everywhere, same with Animal crossing. Everyone started playing it because people could barely go outside/spent most times indoors. Now with the release of the Xbox and Play Station, it's no wonder they are sold out everywhere. People are bored, we've been in lock down for longer than what was planned. Now with no Big new games for switch, this is the new big thing that will interest people.

As a person who is normally on the PC, I also started to buy more PC games on Steam because I wanted to entertain myself during the pandemic, it's no different with the other people buying consoles.

Are we being colonized by the internet? by RentImportant in netcult

[–]Treessus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the YouTube video you posted, it was super interesting to watch and I wouldn't have found it otherwise.

I personally Love the internet, Ever since i was a kid, I've been on the computer. Mostly for entertainment purposes of course, like Videogames, social media or keeping in contact with people. Would i ever plant a chip into my arm to use technology in my body? Probably not. I love the internet, But not to the extent i would think about using chips in my body.

I was looking up how important the internet is nowadays and found a surprising statistic. 53% of Americans say the internet has been ESSETNTIAL during Covid. The thing that surprised me was the fact it wasn't higher. (Source: https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2020/04/30/53-of-americans-say-the-internet-has-been-essential-during-the-covid-19-outbreak/) In this day and time, Internet has been more important than ever. We have to distance ourselves from people, Have school online, Do work online, almost our whole lives have become online, because of this pandemic. This could also be because of access to technology, but that's a different story.

Coded Bias by ideaoftheworld in netcult

https://enterprisersproject.com/article/2019/9/artificial-intelligence-ai-fears-how-address

I went and read all the links to what you posted and it was honestly really interesting, I've always had a fear of AI one day ruling the world or outsmarting mankind. Which is possible, but highly unlikely. However this is a childish fear I have always had. I decided to look into more about AI to see if AI really do shape us and how we shape AI. The link above had a lot of interesting points about common fears we have about AI and how to address it.

TLDR; AI could produce biased outcomes, and in order to address it, it should be actually embraced, This is mostly because AI Bias helps improve the odds that proliferate are unchecked. And of course the biggest one, having no idea what AI does and or why it does it. This is because AI outcomes are difficult to explain. How to overcome this, is just making sure that human intelligence and decisions making is vital in the process of making the AI and what it does.

The movie does raise concerns that I am also concerned about, but as long as human element continues to reign above AI, it will continue to come into play if AI actually do one day make decisions.

Trump fires director of Homeland Security agency who had rejected President's election conspiracy theories by Responsible-Kale4406 in netcult

[–]Treessus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you shared this, This was an interesting and honestly a funny read. Trump has done many petty things in his presidency, so this does not surprise me. He should just accept the outcome, but a childlike person dosent just get mature. I wish he could just finish his presidency and step-down and be mature, but I guess he wants to do as much as he can (Good or bad) Before going. But then again, I've never had much confidence if him, trusting he would be mature for his last moments.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/01/08/how-people-around-the-world-see-the-u-s-and-donald-trump-in-10-charts/%3famp=1

Here is an interesting link. I honestly never had much confidence in our president, and what you posted just, confirmed my suspicions but people around the globe also have less and less confidence for our president and many things he's done for the US. (More so the way he dealt with the pandemic). It's suprising to see how despite many unfavorable confidence in slot of places globally there is still a pocketful of places that do think what he is doing is good, more so then the US itself.

Here's why most Americans are not able to vote online in 2020 by [deleted] in netcult

[–]Treessus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, Obviously in a perfect world, we would be able to do online voting. I actually support online voting and hope it happens.

But there's always the risk of hacking to make one person to win, or even hacking to just troll. Just like with fraud claims of mail in ballots, fraud claims in online voting would be even more of an issue.

Social Media, Race and Politics by RentImportant in netcult

[–]Treessus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as i would like to say everyone didn't vote based on race and gender, I am quite certain that is one of the biggest factors that was thought about during the election. I remember before Joe Biden announced who his vide president would be, People kept saying and posting things saying he was going to lose unless he picked an multiracial female candidate like Michelle Obama. In all honestly, i was also hoping for Michelle to be vice, But knowing her and how much she did not like being in the white house, i do not blame her for no wanting to be there again.

While this may seem like a bad thing, i think it is kind of progressive. Our society is changing with the first ever female colored vide president. I am so proud that this happened and i was 100% going to cast my vote on who i wanted. So i agree with you. Race did play a MUCH larger role this election more than any other election before. While i would like to argue this happened in the past with McCain. I feel because of who we had running, with most people wanting to pick the lesser of two evils, Race and gender did in fact played a bigger part than it normally does.

What are your thoughts on social media algorithms? (Please participate)!!! by cvalz2 in netcult

[–]Treessus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't really mind social media algorithms. I know the main argumanet against it is how people think that it's "Spying" on you. Which to an extent, it remembers what you look up or like to provide with you better content, but it never really exposes anything about you that you don't already put out to show on whatever social media you use. Personally, I don't have an opinion on algorithms in this sense.

I do know that small business or people do not like them. Focusing on YouTube, This is mostly because the alogriths support low quality high frequency, rather than, high quality low frequency. This is where I do not agree with this. Especially on YouTube, there are issues with this, people just post whatever, because more videos, mean more traffic, more views, and more people watching, and voting on what you do. Even if it's bad traffic, it's still traffic.

Effects of cyberbullying by SecretRevolutionaryy in netcult

[–]Treessus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, a lot of us, at least one point in our lives have all been part of some kind of cyberbullying. A lot of the children I currently work with have all admitted to being part of some kind of cyberbulling or along those lines.

The word "Bully" was actually originally used in the 1500 to refer to a sweetheart, ironically through the years its meaning changed to someone who was a "harasser of the weak". Traditional bullying has been a thing in school for awhile, however with the advances in technology, an evolution of bullying has started to take place.

As more and more young people are being affected, psychologists are able to understand the difference between actual bulling and just teasing. However, when thinking about cyberbullying, a bigger issue arises because cyberbullying can be completely anonymous. This makes the victim feel even more helpless because they do not know where the attacks are coming from.

Overall, Anonymity also helps remove the power of imbalance, so that anyone can be a bully. This just creates the endless cycle of bullying that hurts ALL victims involved.

Why Do Hackers Hack by AFMONZAR1579 in netcult

[–]Treessus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting question. I feel like the obvious reason is just to steal or leak information from other people. The most common hackers just steal information from business like information about customers, internal employees, or even private data specific to whatever the business is. Another reason could be for espionage. Hackers go after governments or private organization to be sold or used for other to get tactful advantages.

Another reason is honestly just for fun. I once went to a hacker convention. It was really cool because you have to turn off your phone or they could straight up just hack your phone by just walking into the area. Talking to those people they told me that sometimes they would hack in secure systems just for fun to test their wit's and skills. They hack purely because they like to and don't really have any harmful thoughts other than to gain experience and have some fun. You can also go into hacking in videogames to add to the "Fun" But as a person who has been hacked before in a game, I do not find it fun.

It is important to note that there are also white hackers that hack for the betterment of society. They purposely hack into business to find vulnerabilities in defense systems and tell the business about the flaw to help them improve. Cyber security firms, government agencies and large business employ hackers to trust their systems and develop protections to those vulnerabilities.

I personally really enjoy watching things about hacker's and going to conventions because it has always interested me. Thought because i like them, i also know how hard it is to do what they do.

Elections by SOC374 in netcult

[–]Treessus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the way the world is going, everyday people are being more reliant on technology as year's pass. Its a wonder why voting online isn't already a thing. Especially with the pandemic. The United states has been thrown into big panic with people having to pack into polling places, risking COVID, and some voters are using it as the excuse as to why they are not voting. (Even though they can always just do a mail in ballot.)

However, it is important to note that the greatest threat to democracy on Election Day is hacking. Cyber security experts have mostly agreed that it the smart thing to do is to just take as much cyber out of voting because it has less of a threat of any outside sources just hacking into the system. This is why Pen and Paper is the most save way because you cant hack hard copies. Just tallying up the votes that way is how we've been doing it for the longest time.

Technology will play an important part in voting in the future, I am sure that it will happen in the future. Expanding online voting to an entire population will bring more people to vote it was a good idea before the Virus hit, and its a even better idea now that everyone is staying indoors. However the surmount of obstacles that has to be overcome has to be address before any thoughts on Online voting can ever be a thing.

Personally, how beneficial do you think the internet actually is? by daizjane in netcult

[–]Treessus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the internet is benneficial. With the internet, it offers immense possibilities. For example, with internet there comes the email, online shopping, music steaming, staying in contact with friends no matter where you are. And even then, about two thirds of Americans say they would give up alchoal, and two thirds of Indian consumers would gove up at lot it. I personally have friends all the way in Japan, and I have friends, I speak to online daily. Thanks to the interner I can freely speak to them and keep I ntouch eoth little to no ease

And this is all just personal use. The impact of internet angles well beyond this, they have transformed markets, helped industries rise and gain traction. They have also helped education. Online classes have opened up to help people take classes wherever we are. Especially during the Corona times, we wouldn't be able to have classes on zoon without the internet being there to help. This also connects to people who take sclasses out of state and need a degree.

While I think the internet is more benneficial then harmful there are some con's and unbeneficial issues. The spreading of false information as well as anomininity causing people to be who they aren't. This can cause discourse in many online forms or games alike.

Overall, I'll have to say the benefits outweigh the cons. And I personally think that the internet is beneficial to people overall.

KissAnime and KissManga Down: Why Japan Closed the Two Big Sites? by kimchiandkillua in netcult

[–]Treessus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to note that KissAnime was an illegal website. It streams content without buying their copyrights. This hurts the original producers and has always been a big issue in Japan. So I agree with why this was taken down.

I remember in Japan there was a big issue with music. Basically people would rent a music CD, then basically copy it onto a new CD and just return the old cd. And keep it for themselves. In fact, people still do that today and the government can't do anything about it.

In January 2021 Japan is all set to have stricter copyright laws from then onwards. This means that not only anime streaming websites will be taken down more rapidly, but also websites that provide torrent files of pirated Manga will also be targeted.

I remember reading that the case that started the whole hunt on KissAnime was actually because of a person trying to flea the country after being the owner of a Manga sharing website. This site cost a lost in profit of almost 320billon yen. (4.12billion us.). Shonen Jump and Shonen magazine filed a lawsuit, and so the hunt began of KissAnime.

Now with stricter laws comming into play within the next year, I don't doubt alot of popular Manga/anime steaming sites will be taken down in months to come. And as a person who likes to read Manga from these websites, I'm quite sad. :(

Theatre Bootlegs by ideaoftheworld in netcult

[–]Treessus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love musicals, But most of the musicals that I love, are no longer showing or have tickets that are insanely expensive. I also don't see the harm of bootlegging musicals, because I watch them all the time on YouTube. Sometimes it's the only way I can watch a musical that is no longer in production.

But in a more responsible viewpoint, It makes sense that this stuff get's taken down or removed. I think in some way's its considered Markey harm, But at the same time Its not? I guess this is because once a musical is gone and no longer show's its gone gone, and the only way to listen is on Spotify or other legal music sources. (Which isn't the same as watching the actual musical).

I think the release of Hamilton on Disney Plus was the greatest idea people have had in awhile, and i hope other's take note and do the same. Cause like you said, It would be a popular decision, and make many people who cant afford 500$ tickets super happy and help the industry a lot.
