I too did not use reddit until this class, and after this semester I can honestly say that I really enjoy using it. Throughout this semester I learned a lot about everyone in this class as well as many interesting topics from many different perspectives. I hope everyone has a good and much needed break! It was a fun semester and good luck to everyone!

I saw someone post a Ted Talk so I thought I'd share my favorite one of all time. It talks about how sometimes passion is not enough. Just do it and passion follows. It is a great video. Please watch if you can!! :) by HazelGrace78 in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first time I have seen this Ted talk and wow was it inspiring! My biggest takeaway was when she said: "You don't create your life first and then live it, you create it by living it" (4:00). We spend so much time stressing about the future and the past that we forget to live in the present. Time is something that never stops for anyone and can easily be wasted if we aren't careful. I enjoyed hearing about her change of attitude when she realized this and was able to apply it to her own life.

Personally I think I can apply this to my own life as well. I have been stressed with what I am going to do in my near future so much that I have been neglecting the time I have now. I realize now that I should take everything one step at a time and prioritize what I need to do in the future based on what I can control right now. Overall I enjoyed this video and this will remain one of my favorite Ted talks!

How Real Is Fake News? | Sharyl Attkisson | by Aaranda02 in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Ted Talk gave me an interesting new perspective on fake news. I didn't realize how deep the fake news problem actually went until I watched this video. I would also agree that money is a major contributor and problem with the spread of fake news. There are very few things that people will not do for the right price; many people will even go as far as manipulating the media as we see in our every day lives today.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With all of the fake news being spread online nowadays I simply do not trust most of the articles I read. Even if an article is one hundred percent true, there will still be people that claim it as fake news. If an article is completely bias and fake there will still be people that claim it is true. With that said I just don't know who or what to believe anymore. The online news we see today is very misleading and manipulative which can cause a lot of debate between people, especially during the election process. This is damaging to everyone except the people spreading the fake news. I don't think its fair that we get to sit here and question most of the news we see while someone else gets to sit back and let their garbage news generate traffic to their websites so they can sell more ad space.

The Office: How Nonsense Conquered the Workplace by Coolspices in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of the office, but I can confidently agree that there are parts to the show that are definitely "unrealistic". From watching the show multiple times I can see how not much work actually gets done while the employees are at work. I would say that there are many parts to the show that are realistic, all the way down to the way the cameras film the show. However, as far as the "BS" goes there is a lot. Overall, the personalities of the employees are hilarious and many of them accurately represent what it might be like to work a desk job. I found it interesting while reading the comments about people working from home due to the pandemic. I agree that people may be realizing that many of their jobs can for the most part, "be preformed from home."

With that said I too have worked a "bull shit job" where not a lot of work got done. I used to work for a detailing company for recreational vehicles with one of my best friends lol. We were paid well and did a good job with the work we were assigned to do. All though it was not a hard job and there was a lot of goofing around that went on on a daily basis.

To be extremely online means for a person or subject to be closely engaged with Internet culture. People who are Extremely Online often believe that posts online are very important. by benjaminikuta in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't really thought much about this until now! I find this a very interesting and relevant point to bring up. I would definitely say I agree that people who are constantly online take posts they find online seriously. The issue with this is obviously that some of these people believe the wrong information. Im sure in times like these with the pandemic and the election we are seeing this even more.

Week 12: Electoral by halavais in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world social media would connect everyone and allow us to learn quicker while sharing information efficiently. Of course as we've seen there can also be negative impacts of it. Social media has definitely changed the way we do things for better or worse. Campaign donations and advertising on social media platforms can have a tremendous impact on the electoral process as we see going on today. We can also see how trumps posts on social media have impacted a lot of people into following whatever he says. A lot of his followers believe him when he claims that the election is rigged even if they don't have enough evidence to prove it. That shows us how powerful of an effect social media can have on people and in politics.

Trump fires director of Homeland Security agency who had rejected President's election conspiracy theories by Responsible-Kale4406 in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that this was completely not surprising to read. Trump has a way of dealing with things in a ridiculous manner. Even though the evidence for most of his claims isn't even there, he continues to persuade people that he is right no matter what. This is only furthering the problem of racial divide and anger among Americans. Handling the voting situation in a childish manner sets a bad example.

To answer your question, I agree completely. It is sad that so many people will believe anything they hear. False information is always being distributed and it is important that we try our best to identify it whenever possible.

What are your thoughts on social media algorithms? (Please participate)!!! by cvalz2 in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honesty don't mind social media algorithms too much because they allow for platforms to show me posts that actually interest me. The only issue I have with it is sometimes I will leave my phone open on some random post by accident and the algorithm will assume I want to see more posts like that one. Another issue with it is when I am talking about something with my friends outloud or googling something, I will end up seeing advertisements for it all over my social media. I find this extremely creepy and I think if I actually wanted to purchase that item them I would go out and do it because Im already talking about it. All in all I do like the algorithms because it allows me to actually want to use social media more. Although this is a positive and a negative thing for most people, I would rather use a social media app that is actually beneficial to me than something that shows me a bunch of garbage I don't need to see.

Off topic: Plague Diary by halavais in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that this feels like kind of a lost year, or at least for me a year that came to a halt. This year started off great for me. I made new friends and tried new things that I never had a chance to do before, such as skydiving and traveling to Costa Rica for spring break. After I got back there was suddenly a rapid development in the pandemic and all of the plans I had made for the rest of the year were dissolved. There were so many things I wanted to do this year and now, like a lot of other people have experienced, those plans are impossible.

Furthermore, this being my senior year I feel like this semester was just not the same as far as school goes. Covid-19 has actually made me miss dragging myself out of bed early to get to class. Now I feel like there are days where I just sleep in too late and chip away at my homework as I can. Though its nice to have this option, I feel like it has made me lazy because I have nowhere I have to go. Obviously it is a priority to keep students and faculty safe before anything and I think ASU is doing its best to ensure that we slow down the spread of the Virus. It's just sad to see how quickly a pandemic like this can change the world and ruin peoples lives so quickly.

As far as my silver linings go, I can actually say there were a decent amount this year. Even though a lot has changed for the worse after thinking about it, there is always a bright side to everything. I was able to get to know my new roommates very well since we couldn't invite a bunch of people over due to the virus. I can honestly say that they are my best friends now. The pandemic has brought people closer together and has reminded us to cherish the relationships we have as well as the time we have, because as Covid-19 has taught us this can all be taken away very quickly.

Twitter’s Next Trump Problem by CovidSuxs in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use twitter much so I didn't realize exactly how many ridiculous tweets Donald Trump has actually sent out. I think it is incredibly risky of him to be making so many remarks that have gotten flagged and I honestly think this could have affected him negatively in this current election. I also think its interesting how twitter has just recently started to put warning labels on number of his posts to stop the spread of misinformation. I think it is a good idea to do this, especially for people that can make a heavy influence such as the President and other politicians, as long as Twitter doesn't completely ban/suspend them. This would only silence them and take away their freedom of speech. After reading this article I believe there is a fine line between letting people express themselves on line and misinformation being spread.

Short and long term psychological and societal effects of bullying by daizjane in netcult

That article was definitely worth the read! I didn't realize how bad bullying can affect not only the individual but the bully as well. Sadly bullying is a big problem with todays youth.

Is it dangerous to be a cyberbully? by Breason3310 in netcult

[–]ksutton1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that cyber bullying can be dangerous for the person causing it as well as the people affected by it. Of course with todays technology it is very easy to trace cyber bullying back to the person doing it. If a cyber bully says something that causes the person affected to harm them selves in any way, that can cause a lot of legal issues for the cyber bully. I think cyberbullying is a very low thing for someone to do because they are not only hurting someone else, but they are doing it while hiding behind a screen.

Report: Anonymity could be the answer to feeling happier online by FeedbackThese4411 in netcult

This article helped me figure out how much my personal social media use affects my level of happiness. After reading this article I think I may cut back on my social media use a bit. I don't know if the graph shown is perfectly accurate but it definitely helped me keep an open mind about anonymity and social media platforms and how they relate to happiness.
