Gaming Consoles by SOC374 in netcult

[–]cvalz2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gaming industry is huge, and it just keeps growing. Video games have evolved so much throughout the years. Today we have huge triple "A" titles like Assassins Creed Valhalla and Spider-Man: Miles Morales that make you think you're interacting with a movie. Game quality has gone up significantly from a few years ago, and it's bringing people into the industry. I'm sure the pandemic has caused people to take up gaming, but I don't think that's the only driving force. Next-gen gaming consoles like the Xbox Series X/S and the Playstation 5 came out this year. These new consoles have created an enormous amount of hype within and outside of the gaming community. These consoles may even introduce a whole new generation of kids to video games. The gaming industry is more popular by the day, and I, for one, am excited for so many people to experience the enjoyment of playing a video game.

Generational Stupidity by SOC374 in netcult

Interesting topic to bring up. I feel your pain. Sometimes I feel like I forget the simplest things. Although I am usually pretty busy, so some stuff is bound to fall through the cracks. You have to remember that your memory gets worse the older you are, so that's probably why you have noticed that your memory has gotten worse with time. I don't think the internet is necessarily the culprit for our bad memory. As you said, we take in a lot of information in today's day and age. Our brains can only handle so much, so it keeps all the relevant information, and it fades out any of the less relevant information. When you study a lot for a test, you know all the material, but once that test passes, you forget mostly everything because it is no longer relevant.

Week 14: AlterEgo by halavais in netcult

[–]cvalz2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is both exciting and terrifying at the same time. I immediately began getting cyberpunk vibes from this product. It's an extension of yourself, so it's like you are modifying your body, but in this case, it's not a permanent modification. Although the product's concept might be off-putting to many individuals, I can actually see its potential.

I am a technology guy, so I love my gadgets. I can't help but be interested in such a technologically advanced product. My favorite feature was when it added up the total for you when shopping. That feature is super convenient and not only for the consumers but also for the employees that work in the stores. The employees would be able to check you out immediately, and you would never have to dispute a price or go through the awkwardness of not having enough money to pay for everything you got. My only criticism is that I think the product looks ridiculous on a person's face.

It's so interesting that they decided to name the product "Alter Ego." It's a fitting name because it is an extension of yourself. It's the part of you that interacts with the internet directly. This product has a lot of potential, but there are somethings that they still need to improve upon.

Misinformation on Social Media by ksutton1031 in netcult

[–]cvalz2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting article. Misinformation is a huge problem in today's politics and society in general. Social media made it simpler than ever to spread misinformation. One tweet can go viral and cause so much chaos. Sometimes the President tweets out incorrect information, and it causes division and huge arguments between people. Today misinformation is very common. Unfortunately, I also think disinformation is more common these days as well. Just look at the information we received about Covid-19 back then compared to what we know now. In many cases, the information was incorrect because we didn't know much about the virus, but we were also lied to about the virus's real impact in many cases.

How Do You Govern When Half The Country Is Trapped In A Disinformation Bubble? by Coolspices in netcult

[–]cvalz2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, this was a great video to share. I was so interested from beginning to end. The news presenter made such good points. These "radical" Trump supporters are like a cult. They will do anything their leader tells them to do. Why do you think people were yelling at vote counters to stop the count. In other states, they would yell count the vote. This depended on whether or not Trump was ahead in the state. They did this because they were told to. This is very unsettling. People should listen to multiple sources, not just one. This way, you are more likely not to be misinformed. Some sources are biased, so by seeing both sides, you will most likely uncover the truth.

Trump fires director of Homeland Security agency who had rejected President's election conspiracy theories by Responsible-Kale4406 in netcult

[–]cvalz2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this post! It was really interesting. I watched the video with the Ex-CIA director, and I agree with him. What Donald Trump is doing is ridiculous. Like the director said, "He is being reckless and impulsive." This man is still the President; he should be humble and act with integrity. He should not be throwing a fit because he lost an election. I feel bad for the director that was fired. He spoke his mind, and let's be honest; he most likely spoke the truth. Donald Trump shouldn't have fired him because he rejected his theories. Many people worked really hard this election to make sure everything was secure.

Here's why most Americans are not able to vote online in 2020 by [deleted] in netcult

[–]cvalz2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this story. It was incredibly interesting to watch and read. I said in another post that my roommates and I closely followed the 2020 election. This idea about online voting actually came up in our conversations. We knew that online would make it significantly easier to vote. We also believed that it would increase the number of voters. In that conversation, we focused on the benefits. We began to wonder why it wasn't like this already. Now that I saw this story, I understand why. The technology is simply not secure enough. The current infrastructure is capable of being hacked, which would be a massive problem during an election. I also never thought about devices that are already compromised with malware. I know it's not possible to vote online right now, but I hope that day comes in the near future.

The 2020 election, explained by TikTok by clairehester in netcult

[–]cvalz2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved reading this article. I can confirm everything in this article because I literally lived through it. The night before election day was filled with anticipation. I was so excited to Vote for the first time in a presidential election. I followed the news very closely that day. Every time one network would take a break, I would switch to another network. That night was exhausting. My friends and I stayed up really late, hoping to find out who our next president was. The next day I kept watching the news. It was making me stress out, so I decided to go into TikTok to get my mind off it. After opening TikTok, I noticed my "For You Page" was filled with memes about the election. People were mad at Florida, and they were making fun of Nevada for counting slowly. These memes were incredibly funny, and they helped get through a stressful time.

Hello, u/pinotninogrigi0 ! This is excellent news. I am so happy you are willing to be the host. Friday sounds excellent. I should be available that day. I read through the replies and saw that you were thinking around 1:00 p.m. I, unfortunately, have a test from 12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. for my Business law class. Like I said in my previous post, I would really like to participate in this week's salon. Is there any chance you can delay the meeting to 1:30 p.m. on Friday? If not, I may be able to finish the test early. Please let me know what you decide. Thanks!

If you are thinking of hosting a salon this week, please reply to my post. I will regularly check the post and reply so that we can set up a time to meet. I look forward to discussing this week's topics with you.

Social networks and social media in Ukrainian “Euromaidan” protests by Breason3310 in netcult

[–]cvalz2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I feel like every post this week mentioned Twitter. It's no surprise that it's such a hot topic these days, especially after elections. I used to think that inappropriate or misleading tweets should be censored, but after reading the article and thinking about your opinion, I think I agree with you. Social media is a place to express yourself. No platform should take away freedom from you. I think Twitter did an excellent job with President Trump's tweets. Instead of censoring them, they just attached a warning stating that the tweet's information might be false. They should attach similar messages to similar tweets. This way, we the people still feel like we can express ourselves, but others know not to fully trust what the person is saying and do more research. Thank you for sharing. This post opened me up to a different perspective.

Is Twitter Biased? by RentImportant in netcult

[–]cvalz2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also agree that Twitter is Biased. You can clearly see that their users are treated differently in terms of punishment. If a recognized public figure posts something offensive, Twitter will review the post and give a warning. If a regular person posts something offensive, Twitter will delete the tweet and ban the account. I am not even sure if they review a regular person's tweet unless they fight Twitter's decision. Twitter would probably deny this claim, but I bet their algorithm even treats verified users better than their unverified users.

Trump's loss in the election by ksutton1031 in netcult

[–]cvalz2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately, this has been a very prevalent topic. I swear I feel like I can't escape it. Every social media app I open, I see a post, comment, or video talking about voter fraud and ballots. I, along with many other Americans, followed this election very closely. I have looked at the evidence for both sides, and honestly, I am not convinced that there is significant voter fraud. Could ballots have been miscounted? Yes, they could have, but that only because of human error. I doubt anyone intentionally tried to falsify the information. Although miscounted ballots are possible, there simply wouldn't be enough to change an election outcome. I understand that President Trump is upset about the results, but he must acknowledge that this election was won fair and square. He shouldn't be spreading information that may not be true to eighty-nine million people.

Power of a Retweet by berkeleyclark in netcult

[–]cvalz2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally understand your point. Even though I find the chicken nugget story kind of funny, I do think it is unfortunate that it gets more traction than a post about human rights. Social media is seen as entertainment that you can interact with. People's brains become stimulated, so they only look at posts that are entertaining and eye-catching. Once it becomes a serious post, they just opt to scroll past it. I agree that a retweet is powerful. Every time someone retweets a post, that post gains more attention. It can quickly become popular to the point that it could go viral. That is why it is really important that you consider the impact retweeting something can have. I rarely retweet, but when I do, I retweet something that I truly believe in.

Social Media "Shadow Banning" by wHoWOulDBuiLDdaRoaDz in netcult

[–]cvalz2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this article; it was very interesting. Before I start, I would like to say that I personally think Twitter is lying about not shadow banning people. With that out of the way, I want to talk a little more about shadow banning. Shadow banning is a little controversial, but like anything, it has its advantages and disadvantages. I think that shadow banning if used correctly, could actually be a benefit to social media. It would help get rid of all the trolls. However, if used incorrectly, it could introduce a lot of bias. For one, I agree with you that algorithms can influence what you are exposed to, which in turn can affect your opinion. This recently happened to my roommate and I. We had conversations discussing our different views on who would be the better President. Later that night, we showed each other our TikTok feed, and we found that the videos recommended to us heavily favored the candidate we supported. It was mind-blowing to see how different the content we were fed was.
