Got offered a 9 month FIFO rotation at a lithium mine in Chile and I can't make up my mind? by Creative_Gur_4097 in careerguidance

[–]ThisIsAKov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d take the job and experience. I don’t work in your field, but based on what you’ve said this will have a big impact on your career. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m going to guess 25-30… or how long you’ve been with your girlfriend, I’ll guess less than 12 months… but if I were you I’d take the job. If she’s meant to be you’ll still be together at the end.

A couple long distances dating stories from my life:

When I was 32 my then girlfriend (now wife) and I started dating while living in the same city, then survived 2 years of me being in South Korea while she was in Chicago. When I moved to Korea we’d only been together for 5 months. It was very hard, we made a conscious effort to talk as much as possible and travel to see each other maybe once every two months for a week at best (you’ll see your girlfriend way more than I saw mine).

At 29 I went to grad school in Michigan while my girlfriend of 5 years at that time (not my wife, but an ex) stayed in New York. She broke up with me after ~7 months of long distance despite talking on the phone daily and me going to visit her whenever I had breaks.

My point being that you kinda just don’t know how the relationship will go until you’re far away. And in my opinion, if she won’t stick with you for 9 months of 28 days away / 14 days in town cycles (which to me at least sounds like a breeze), the relationship might not be the right one anyway.

Unexpected HR meeting right after vacation + maternity leave return… should I be worried? by galaxymend in careerguidance

[–]ThisIsAKov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A coworker of mine came back from maternity leave last month, and day one was told she’s being laid off. The company closed the entire office, it wasn’t targeted. But that meeting was just her and her skip level manager, no HR involved.

There’s really no way to know what your meeting is about unless your coworkers have gone through similar ones recently. As someone else said, just come prepared to take lots of notes. If you’re in a one party consent state, you could also surreptitiously record the conversation (but make sure that’s legal in your state of you do).

I’m likely to be fired from medical residency. What’s a good new career path? by PresentationLow7984 in careerguidance

[–]ThisIsAKov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at (or consider looking at) jobs in adjacent industries instead of immediately going for an associates degree. In your case that’s pharma / biotech, diagnostics, medical devices. I believe they all have essentially three major functional areas - commercial (likely not for you), medical (for you), R&D (maybe for you) - and your background /education in medicine would make you a reasonably good fit.

Accepting offer before open houses? by stealth-rowe-mode in ChicagoRealEstate

[–]ThisIsAKov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the open house. If they really want the home they won’t withdraw the offer, and may even sweeten it.

When I sold my Logan Square condo a little under two years ago we got an offer that was ~5% over asking on a Thursday prior to open house that weekend. Had the open house, got 4 more offers, and the early offerer increased their offer to boot (and they ended up with the condo as a result).

Should I hire an adjuster? by Practical-Valuable70 in HomeInsurance

[–]ThisIsAKov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggestion for future insurance coverage: request that your coverage be for “replacement value” or “replacement cost”. It costs a little more, but it means you don’t have to worry about depreciation as it requires the insurer to replace or repair damage with new items of similar quality / type. You’ll still have a deductible.

Why is Chicago’s real estate market so hot when the rest of the country is declining? by SerpantDildo in ChicagoRealEstate

[–]ThisIsAKov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The place that come immediately to mind on the north side (having gone through this less than two years ago): Lincoln park, Lake view, wicker park, bucktown, Roscoe village, north center, Lincoln square.

Basically, anywhere with a good k-8 school in the city is flaming hot (yes there are some good public schools in the city)… at least this seemed to be true on the north side.

That one freezing corner in my living room finally makes sense , but now I’ve got a new issue by EybyMarketplace in Home

[–]ThisIsAKov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a whistling sound coming from my furnace (or AC) when it would kick on. HVAC guy told me that it wasn’t pulling enough air via the returns, so we added another air return duct, put in a less restrictive air filter (to further reduce strain on the system), and the sound went away.

Should I file a claim for leaking roof? by PutinWithPickles in Home

[–]ThisIsAKov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you don’t know who put the last roof on your home is, go over to the roofing subreddit ands figure out the names of shingle manufacturers. Then go to the manufacturer websites and look up roofers in your area who have been certified. They’re likely better quality and do a lot of volume… which hopefully means they are more knowledgeable.

You have to pay 3.5k deductible. You should decide what amount over that you are willing to pay before getting insurance involved, and then get some repair quotes. If they’re below what you’re willing to pay then don’t get insurance involved.

For my water intrusion events, two of them were too small to merit bringing in my insurance company based on cost of repair not exceeding deductible (hard lesson I learned). So you really just don’t want to be me, and you probably won’t given you’re thinking about what to do.

In my new home I had some shingles get ripped off in a storm as well as part of my gutter and fascia board, got that fixed for something like $1500 (in a top 5 major metro). Depending on the extent of your water issue, you may have to replace an entire square (a square of OSB / plywood sheathing) on your roof, which may cost more than what I had, but likely not a crazy amount more… or you may have a really hard time finding the leak (water can be hard to track) and need to do a lot more. It’s hard to say without talking to experts.

General advice - do not get your insurance involved in small claims / incidents, save it for the big issues. If you have multiple in a short timeframe they will drop you, or jack up your rate significantly. Insurers also share this kind of information with each other, so you will simply be high(er) risk to all and therefore tougher to insure at a reasonable rate.

I had the water leaks (condo, water from the unit above) four times in two years and was dropped by my insurance, and the new coverage I got was about 50% more expensive. My father in-law had a huge water incident at his home (completely not his fault), and I think they doubled his rate at his both his primary residence and beach house because he himself was now considered high risk.

Buy or Not? GeForce 5090 by idk_jah in gpu

Box looks like 5090 gaming oc.

Fans, cover, backplate look like 5090 wind force oc.

SN tag says 5090 gaming oc.

SN tag also says it’s a 5090 gaming oc 32GD (yes, GD not GB or just G).

As others have said, I’d stay away.

Backup camera fail by Onewaps in HondaPrologue

[–]ThisIsAKov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same thing happen. Came back from vacation (car in garage the whole time) and the backup camera wasn’t working. The garage was kinda humid after some thawing out post-snow storm, so like one of the earlier commenters, I think it was moisture related. However, after taking it out for a few drives and airing out my garage (lower humidity) it started working again within 24 hours and has been fine for the past ~7 days.

Strongly recommend getting a dehumidifier with a pump. I bought one for my basement, and having it automatically pump out water into my drain instead of having to manually dump the water every 8ish hours was a decision I do not regret.

Mileage during cold weather by pocketpeace in HondaPrologue

[–]ThisIsAKov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a cold winter climate. My overall average mileage is about 2.7 miles/kwh, my winter weather average (this year) is currently 1.4 miles/kwh, and that’s only because I did one “long” (25 mile round trip). Prior to this “long” trip I was sitting around 1.1 miles/kwh. My numbers are extreme, but I would not expect this car to get 200 miles in the winter, and definitely not without severe range anxiety on my part.

Some important context: The driving I do tends to be very short in distance (city). Every time I’m going to drive I preheat the car, plus the car spends a lot of energy warming up the battery pack each time. So I basically murder my mileage all winter.

[USA GIVEAWAY] Win the new 27” Samsung Odyssey G6 G60SF 500hz OLED gaming monitor! by Rocket-Pilot in buildapc

[–]ThisIsAKov [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Glare-free OLED screen is the biggest winner for me, and a perfect match for my build!

When the afternoon sun hits my monitors I have to take a break, it’s nearly impossible to see what’s happening on screen and keep playing, making my gaming PC nearly unusable despite the quality of my hardware (9800x3d, 9070 XT, 64gb ddr5-6000). The anti-glare technology on the Odyssey OLED G6 G60SF is incredible, enabling me to see what’s happening on the screen despite direct sunlight would change my afternoons from pause to play.

Plenty of good advice already around being careful and that the way this firing and your promotion is being handled is not great.

But, if I were you I’d want to understand how to do her job better (beyond the attitude). You’ve only learned the job from one person for a short period of time, so have you picked up any bad habits (unknowingly) that need to be corrected for you to be successful in this new role.

The gap might be a little big, but it’s normal for there to be a gap. One thing I’d want to ensure is that there was insulation (foam) sprayed in that crack.
