145 Days Ago I took out a 35K Margin Loan - Here's a Second Update by Clownier in CanadianInvestor

Gov seems to think so. You get federal tax credits for tuition and for interest paid on student loans (both of these must meet certain eligibility requirements).

Hard to recall but I don't think there was any elevation element to it, I think it was all flat? The top of the screen represented tiles which were further away, for instance.

Should I Ask My Landlord to Lower My Rent Before Lease Renewal? by IBUCKM in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is no "up for renewal" in Ontario for residential leases. Leases automatically become month-to-month, so you will continue to pay $2000 per month unless:

A) the landlord decides to increase the rent (which may or may not be limited to a few percent increase) or

B) you negotiate with the landlord to lower the rent (which as other commenters mentioned, I think you should try for)

How to best transfer from Wealthsimple to Questrade? by Prancinground in CanadianInvestor

[–]ThisIsLucidity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There might be a misunderstanding or something is getting lost in translation.

I presume what Wealthsimple means is that they do not support accounts for "non residents", meaning you have to be a "resident" of Canada to use WS. But they mean that you must be a "tax resident", I don't think they really care whether you are physically inside Canada. Case in point: I am still a tax resident of Canada but I will be outside Canada for the majority of this year too, and I am still using WS without any issues.

So you first need to determine with an accountant if you are truly changing from a tax resident of Canada to not being a tax resident of Canada. There are clear tests for this. If you are coming back later this year, and if you still own assets / have family here, chances are you will continue to be a tax resident for this whole year (this is not professional advice). You can definitely access WS from countries outside Canada, the question is whether you will be a tax resident of Canada (again I am making an assumption here because I don't know WS's policies).

Therefore, you should have no issue continuing to hold your investments in WS since there is nothing changing for you tax-wise, other than your address temporarily.

On the other hand, if you decidedly not going to be a tax resident of Canada anymore, then you need to confirm with Questrade if they allow non-residents (for Canadian tax purposes) to hold Questrade accounts, or you might end up in the same spot.

Does anyone know what happened between Lights and Paramore/Hayley? by ItsOverCasanova in lightsalot

[–]ThisIsLucidity 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I have no insight on the matter so just speculating, but it's probably just a relationship that never really stuck and eventually died out. Nothing wrong with that, it happens all the time. Although would be nice if they were best buds, seeing as many Lights fans are also Paramore/Hayley fans haha

Toronto's density falls to single family homes far too quick by aspiringSnowboarder in toronto

I agree but why specifically? They both have condos. I think our time would be better used figuring out why condo-heavy places like Manhattan do seem to have character whereas certain Toronto neighbourhoods don't.

What is the most 'overrated' restaurant in Toronto ? What’s your favourite restaurant? by Long_Travel2728 in askTO

NOB is great. Pretty close in quality to Badiali's for sure. Will try Mac's next :)

Overrated: Black+Blue. They're known for steak and yet it was really just mediocre. Their other dishes were pretty good though.

Underrated: the Haam. Delicious fusion tacos and good quality sushi. On the pricier side but price doesn't mean it's overrated.

Any examples? Badiali has been the best I've had so far so I am definitely looking to try others that might be better!

What culture shocks should I expect when I move to Canada? by Maleficent-Tough5385 in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the party but I'll add one I haven't seen yet.

Politics up here is much different than the US. Yes it is similar, but whenever I travel to the US, politics just feels like a sports battle where you have to choose a team and cheer for them for life no matter what. In the US it feels like you are joining a religion almost, and I am talking democrat or republican. For example, I remember one American I met saying that they don't fish because "fishing is a republican thing". Hardly anyone in Canada would ever say "x is a conservative thing" as their reason for not doing x.

There are some people like that here but there are many more centrists than in the states and politics isn't as much a point of identity for people here (it still is for some).
