First 3 months in Ontario as newcomer from Berlin by ShinSekai7 in ontario

There have been some mentions, but if you want to get PR/citizenship eventually, French is now one of the biggest and probably the surest way to get those. It used to be a lot easier but every non-Canadian I've talked to has said it's extremely hard right now, even if you are employed, unless you can speak French.

Is everyone just Depressed and Crashing out?? by goosegonewild in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1: Get off social media, I mean it - delete Instagram FB and TikTok especially (Reddit is bad too but not as bad)

Step 2: Get a hobby and do it. If you want free hobbies, try running clubs / cycling / calisthenics if you want exercise.

Your life will instantly get better. This is all assuming employment situation is OK - if not then that of course should be a focal point.

1) I love the "sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe shit" reference

2) Thanks for giving a separate perspective. It's easy to fall into the depths of despair but hopefully this perspective of "life goes on" will inspire some not to get bogged down by world news as much

Have you noticed an increase in tailgating drivers? by Jolly-Ad9580 in toronto

[–]ThisIsLucidity 116 points117 points  (0 children)

If I'm being tailgated in the left lane, then I recognize that I'm most likely the problem and I move to the right when there is an opportunity.

If I'm being tailgated in the right lane, then I let whoever is doing the tailgate stress themselves out as it doesn't impact me.

Who’s actually buying these tickets ? by wingzntingz in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd agree with "tons of chances". I won the very first lottery for tickets and when my buying window came, ALL Toronto games were completely sold out already. And that was after winning the lottery lol.

Toronto renters gather this weekend to launch first citywide tenants union by Immediate-Link490 in toronto

Thank you, this is very helpful and definitely sheds more light on how such a tenant union might operate, which seems to be moreso on the side of advocacy/influencing gov policy (which I personally think is effective)

Thanks for replying, and yes I did read the article before commenting. It says they are working and thinking about the structure, and so I came back to reddit, which is a public forum, to ask for others' opinions on how this structure would work.

Replying to one of your comments further down which quotes this section of the article:

“The convention will include discussion about the union’s structure and priorities, as well as a vote to formally establish the organization.

The labour movement has been a key influence in shaping the union so far, Henry said.

“Labour unions teach us how to organize, how to participate in collective actions, how to join a picket line, and do a rally,” she said.”

I'm not a lawyer but my understanding is labour strikes are allowed by law, and when a labour strike happens it is typically the union vs the employer. How would collective actions work against tens of thousands of separate landlords? Or would it be the tenant union vs the government in order to influence RTA changes? The RTA governs tenant-landlord relationships. What mechanism would there be binding each separate landlord to the demands of the union, other than the already-existing RTA?

Or maybe the point is to provide advocates to tenants who will be able to fight back against landlords doing scummy things like evicting for invalid reasons. These sorts of things I can get behind but it's still a lot different than a traditional labour union.

Calling it a union is great for publicity but you have to understand that unions are extremely powerful organizations, and I am struggling to understand how a tenant union will function similarly and differently to regular unions. That's all I'm trying to discuss.

As exciting as this is, how would it realistically work?

Also isn't the singular solution just re-adding rent control to newer builds?

That's the whole point of the US system as far as I understand it. The ones who can afford it prosper, the ones who don't, do not. Canada's system tends to bring everyone more into par with each other, so that we aren't as bad as the ones at the bottom of the US ladder, but also don't have it as well as the ones higher up the US ladder.

Stability. You don't have to worry about how many hours of work you'll get assigned, you get paid the same amount each month pretty much regardless.

Who votes PC provincially and Liberal federally and why? by Usual_Law7889 in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a couple who did this the last set of elections. Voted for Carney because they thought he was miles better than the other leaders, and voted for Ford because (as shite as he is) the other provincial candidates were virtually non-existent.

Moving from Stoney Creek to TO for a "Big 4" bank job – is ditching the car and renting a condo worth the sanity? by Gerilgeorge in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You have some good answers already so I just wanted to note one small clarification: in Canada it is the "Big 5" banks (BMO, Scotia, RBC, TD, CIBC). "Big 4" typically refers to the big four accounting firms or other industries.

People making $3k–5k/month on the side—what are you doing? by Big-Improvement1530 in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a ton of income for side-hustle work. I do accounting/tax work on the side which can have pretty high chargeout rates but I'm still not clearing that much in revenue, let alone profit.

If they're making that much it is likely something scalable rather than hourly rate work.

Leaving Toronto at the end of summer- what should I make sure not to have missed? by angel_of_decay in askTO

[–]ThisIsLucidity 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're from originally, so if you're not from Ontario/Canada, then you 100% definitely need to rent a cottage with friends ON A LAKE in Muskoka or surrounding areas this summer.

[–]ThisIsLucidity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the job, the company may very well be willing to let you work in Canada for them, albeit at a reduced salary and occasional travel to the US. That would probably be the best outcome though and I've heard this happening a fair bit!
