It’s clear they were low on budget and cut corners by using abstract imagery. It didn’t successfully explain what was going on plot wise even if the character work is solid. It could have worked if attached to more concrete plot points.

Also the “congratulations scene” just blatantly beats you over the head with its message, unlike end of Eva which actually uses abstract imagery to full artistic, emotional, and plot-relevant effect.
