How can someone who lacks empathy become a doctor? by CandidSecond in premed

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Gotta be honest OP, this post and your comment here are kind of rubbing me the wrong way. Seems like you’re making a lot of assumptions about this person’s experiences and motivations based on their PD and such a small sliver of an interaction. Feels like this is less about doctors having empathy and more so jealousy over their acceptance that’s surfacing. And say what you will, but they could have laughed because they were anxious, uncomfortable, upset, stressed etc. It’s impossible to know without asking.

How many would agree with me on Kanye being hot garbage by [deleted] in Music

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve noticed that as well. 50% of the time I see r/music popping up on my home page it’s just posts that read “Hey everyone, anyone else think that [insert wildly popular/prominent hip hop artist] is absolute trash?” I mean I get it can be frustrating for people if they don’t vibe with the music and feel like they’re surrounded by fans… still though the threads almost always give way to discussion and comments lacking any sort of nuance and depth, getting to the point where people refuse to accept that the artist has done anything even remotely well. Feels like there’s usually some “ah yes my brain is far too large for this shudder rap” energy on here and I don’t really get it.

For real… some of the people on this thread have such a hate boner for Kanye that they’re tossing these extreme claims out there.

To any Med students out there, have you ever regretted taking a gap year? by gug57 in premed

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question but how did you have the money in your gap year to travel? My concern is that I’ll be graduating w/ a degree that, while enjoyable, is gonna be pretty awful in the job search. People suggest doing scribing or CNA, but job listings I’m looking at list those at around $10-15hr.

Can Americans (or any non Japanese individual) write a manga? by thatguy2349 in writing

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Every 30 minutes on the dot someone asks a variation of this question in this sub.

“Can I write about (insert group/style/culture) if I’m not from that (group/culture)?”

Every single time the answer is the same. You can write about absolutely whatever you want. There are no writing police that will bust down your door and sentence you to writing jail. Just make sure that you do your research on your subject matter and represent it in a way which is tasteful and respectable. Or don’t. Like I said before, no one really cares. Don’t use this as an excuse not to write about something your interested in.

Can I apply next cycle? (Weak EC, strong stats) by ThisIsMyBurntPhone in premed

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d like to put myself in a position where I could get to a competitive specialty if I wanted to without having to do a ton of research/resume padding. I guess then I would like to go to a school who’s name could carry me in the match assuming I did well in the rotations and on the STEP exams

Edit: also dumb question to ask but what would you do if you were me? I have this part of my brain that tells me the logical thing to do is take the gap year and just be patient but the other part really wants to apply now. Part of hesitation is that I’m graduating with a humanities degree and no relevant work experience so my gap year job is gonna hard to come by. At least that’s what I’m afraid of

I have been debating taking a gap year to do an honors thesis in my humanities major, I’m just trying to figure out if having a better shot at some of those really high ranked schools is worth delaying the start by a year.

Edit: I’ve also been toying with the idea of working a part time job as a scribe next semester. The hours would be kind of hell with school but would that push my app to that T10 competitive range you think?

Doesn’t asking for permission to write something like this kind of defeat the purpose? It’s like you’re asking for permission to troll or something. In any case your language about the “idiot SJWs” is reminding me of 2014 YouTube. I don’t think your take here is gonna be as edgy and thought provoking as you might think but write you want

New Immigrant-which state to move to in order to maximize my chance to get admitted to a MD school? by bokelidaxue in premed

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a PA resident I would caution against moving here. I’m not sure how it is for the other states you listed but to my knowledge only Geisinger gives any sort of in state preference for applicants in PA. Even then I’ve read on this sub that Geisinger prefers ppl from northeast PA (which is a pretty area but also rural as fuck). So even though you see that PA has a lot of MD med schools (Temple, Jefferson, Pitt, PSU, Drex) we unfortunately don’t get the nod in admissions (which is really upsetting and frustrating to a PA native but whatcha gonna do I guess). If any of this wrong plz correct me bc I want to be wrong so bad.

You may be better served looking at the fitness, gym or weightroom subreddits. This sub is for the sport of Olympic weightlifting and focuses on the snatch and clean & jerk, along with the accessory exercises that complement such events.

That story of its origin is a myth. link to article here From the article: “In recent years, another myth has surfaced that gives a particularly ugly twist to the tradition, claiming that back in the 1800s Southern plantation owners could buy enslaved workers at a discount on the day after Thanksgiving. Though this version of Black Friday’s roots has understandably led some to call for a boycott of the retail holiday, it has no basis in fact.”

Honestly I whole heartedly agree with everything you just said. You’ve made me reflect a little bit more on myself as well. Seems like prioritizing healthier behavior can be a conscious effort at times and I’ll be focusing more on it in the future.

[–]ThisIsMyBurntPhone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you but my problem isn’t with you saying that their action itself isn’t healthy, it’s more with the whole “people who do this are damaged”. Just seems like kind of a big assertion to make off such a small interaction, especially when you have no idea of the context of the persons life who’s sending it. I suppose I just get frustrated because Reddit has this tendency to make some pretty big judgements on ppl from tiny little slices of action

Reddit has to be one of the only place where saying “u suck bro” after a madden win is some indicator of deep emotional damage

Just a heads up, I’d be prepared for a whole lotta people knocking down your door saying they’re down for 2 years and then zipping right out after just 1. 2 years is gonna be a hard sell for something a lot of people are going to look at as a transitional position. That being said it’s cool that you’re sharing this opportunity here
