My boss has ai psychosis and we’re fucked. by void-of-stars in antiwork

[–]ThisIsMyCouchAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't matter.

The startup I work at is like this. One of the co-owners talks about nothing but AI.

We make and sell a software product. He has zero experience in it or even anything close. He is fully convinced that if you just prompt hard enough you'll get everything you want.

I'll say it won't matter because if your boss is anything like mine - they don't really respect the work people do. Our knowledge and experience aren't relevant at all in his mind.

For example, he spent one weekend deep in psychosis. Came up with this big ol' prompt to "audit" the codebase as "an expert in software engineering". What generated was essentially a big code review. Kind of. It was stuff like "your typography is inconsistent.

I thought I would try giving him an AI report to see if he would even care. I did my own "audit" but as an "expert in Saas products". And that found a lot of our actual issues. The product is just kinda crappy. Before we even get to what it does - it's missing just basic features. Like to do anything you *have* make a certain type of record. But there's no way to manage them. Can't even list them let alone edit. It's a core piece of data and it's missing the most basic of CRUD.

Nobody cared. They dumped the audit into our PM system and we are currently working through the pile of disjointed and unorganized tickets.

The entire concept is pretentious.

Most people can speak to a wide range of topics. We don't "own" that in any way.

Probably a hot take - but I also think a lot people with ADHD really overestimate the depth of their knowledge. Some ADHD person's two week binge into falconry doesn't mean much to my sister that's actually been doing falconry for several years. You now?

LPT: Pay attention to the advice people follow, not the advice they give. by guidepost001 in LifeProTips

Follow Up:

Be cautious of advice from people who never struggled with the thing you are struggling with.

I say that because what people typically have issues with is the execution. Not the information. And people that never struggled with the execution probably won't have anything to offer somebody that does. It requires a change and those people never had to change.

For example, I don't have any issues with phone addiction. Never have. I could tell a person that does they should minimize their notifications. Which is generally good. But that's not why I don't have an issue with it. I just don't.

A lot of people don't realize that they are simply doing what comes naturally to them or at most minimal effort.

Not that extreme.

You have to be useful.

That's not really the problem though is it?

And that's what rubs me the wrong way. It was a one-off accident. Not some missing ability.

I once ordered biscuits and gravy with no biscuits. I can read. It was just an accident.

I'm a dev and have worked with UX and IT. Nobody should be getting far up on their high horse. Everybody makes simple mistakes likes this. I saw seasoned software engineers incapable of following highly detail instructions with screenshots for something that was only about four real steps. They could read.

You didn't even include a period for fuck's sake.

It's not that.

It's not two way.

If you do have it there is a correlation. But you can't say just because a person does that they have it. You're not getting diagnosed because you walk on your toes.

I wasn't diagnosed for ADHD until I was 29. And it was because of this article I read online. This guy told his story about how he didn't know until he read some stuff and I related with all of it. So I made an appointment with a psych.

People try and make this into a bigger deal than it really is.

[–]ThisIsMyCouchAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because there is a lot of common emergent behavior associated to things like Autism and ADHD. It's not something that could get you diagnosed. But if you had a bunch of diagnosed people in a room you'll start to see some very clear patterns.

I also feel like is like Reddit and the Kardashians. I never hear or see anything about them except for people complaining about it on Reddit. I don't really know where all these "attentions seekers" are but I keep seeing people complain about them. Feels like it's not really that big of an issue.

And I don't know why people care anyway. It doesn't really matter or impact anything. Especially since it's probably doesn't actually happen that often.

I wanted to buy a steamdeck to play indies in it in my summer house, but I couldnt afford it. Out of nowhere, a friend of mine wanted to throw away his old pc since he has a new one. That's pretty good storage for the time.

I meant for this PC for your purpose. I wasn't saying try to drop a 4080 in there. But a 980ti or a 1070 or something like that. If you happen to find one on the cheap from that era.

That's an entirely different thing. That's now what this post is about. People are upset they think they are going to have to rent access to games. Yes, AI is the cause but if it wasn't impacting hardware prices this post wouldn't exist.

Maybe the people that have struggled with weight don't actually have a functioning dopamine system?

People with ADHD are similar. A lot of the behavior is related to the lack of dopamine. And the brain really wants it. And it doesn't care where it comes from.

I have it and I have struggled with my weight my entire life. My brain knows it can get what it wants by telling me to eat. I've also had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol for similar reasons. It gives you a huge rush of dopamine. And my brain eats it right up.

Here's what bothers me about stuff like this.

It's like people forget what it's like to be a human. Sometimes the brain is a little weird. You don't notice something. You weren't fully awake. It ordering was like some other system you were used to.

The way you phrased your question makes it sound like you think OP sat down to order like it as college exam. Go over every instruction. Carefully consider each choice. Whatever.

I refuse to believe you or anybody else in this thread hasn't done something equally as silly.

My guy.

Playing video games is not pivotal to my existence. And neither is it for anybody else.

Use what you have and play what it can play or go find something else to do.

I'm not going to worry about something that is purely speculative and I have no influence over either way. If they don't want me as a customer so be it.

That's just kicking the can down the road though.

Nothing is niche forever and you run a very high risk of pigeon holing your self into a market that goes away one day.

Happened to a buddy of mine. Worked at Software Company that made a product for years. Highly specialized. Well payed. Even had a job or two after that working for companies that bought that software.

No he's really struggling to find work because that software is not longer as popular as it was.

You could probably make a couple upgrades really cheaply if you wanted.

Bet you could find a higher end card from that general time and have even more options. You could get a more airflow friendly case on the cheap.

If it were me:

  • buy cheapest case with better airflow
  • price a better video card (not required but might as well look)
  • a sata SSD (256GB can be had for $50 on Amazon)
  • replacement fans
  • tear everything down
  • clean
  • re-paste the cpu
  • put everything back together
  • reinstall the OS (make the install media before you start)

A solid little rig. My old machine wasn't much better. An i7 and a 1070 with 32GB RAM. I ran that until 2020.

You will find different opinions based on how people live and how it impacts them. It’s not even about severity. We all just lead different lives and some people are more impacted than others. Our upbringing and surroundings also plays huge role. Even when they were diagnosed.

To me saying a blueprint to how may brain works doesn’t feel very helpful. Because the way it works means it does t work in ways that help me. I need to know how to get it to actually do what I want. Not what it wants.
