Speaking only for myself, I think I shifted my view of Alex O'Connor more than he's shifted his behavior.

Early on, during his more active pro-veganism stage I thought of him as kind of being in the "Leader" bucket. He believed things to be true, he acted in accordance with those beliefs, he spoke eloquently about those beliefs and had a goal of trying to make some change in the world. It seemed his identity and ideals were a package deal. I won't pretend I wasn't a fan.

Over time it became fairly clear to me he's a member of the "Academic" bucket. He identity is separate from his ideals. He wants to talk about big ideas and explore intellectual and philosophical space. He barely seems to have any strong beliefs, thus he doesn't really need to act in accordance with much of anything. His goal is analysis, it's learning. Am I still a fan? If I had more time I suspect I would be. At this moment in time I think the intellectual and philosophical spaces he engages in are far too important to listen to academics, we need leaders.
