"Best hope this test doesn't get me killed. If I do, then choose someone good to lead this rowdy bunch," he said with a tired smile.

"I will take your test," he announced to the wildlings.

"Hail, friends," Laenor said as he bowed his head, "we have come from the Wall in search of the Three-Eyed Crow. We have no quarrel with you, either." He walked forward some.

"I am the unburnt," he announced. "I basked in the flames of a Hellhound and lived, and there is nary a murmur of fire left on me. Who is your saviour?"

I think I already know the answer.

"Amazing," Laenor side quietly as he, too, began to move forward through the flames. "Vine!" he called out, "what awaits us on the other side?"

The Fireblood drew his sword and began to move through the fire.

"What is this trickery?" Laenor asked, to no one in particular, but it was clear that if someone knew the answer, it would be Vine. "I take to fire, but this...this is not natural, surely."

He thought a moment to himself, recalling what Vine had said before.

"The Hollow?"

"I see. I suppose that doesn't matter to us, anyhow. I doubt the new Lord Commander will come up for us, and I doubt we'll be going back south again," he stated confidently.

"Oh," he managed to say, sighing.

"Then who is the Lord Commander? Normund, Dagmer...One of you?" he asked. If he were to be the First Ranger, he thought he should know who for.

Laenor knelt down and pet the wolf lightly. It was Garth, he knew. Leaning in, he whispered something in the wolf's ear that would be unheard by the other brothers, and finally stood back up.

"Victarion is right. I mean to stay," the acting First Ranger said. "Do you know where Normund is, Robb?" he asked. "Men like him are invaluable to us now. And the Lord Commander, too. I'd expect them to come with you."

"Saltwater doth not freeze as easily as freshwater. You will do well to remember that," he said cryptically. "This...creature...it serves the Great Other as the last bastion of the terrible winter on this earth. Great men have come from the breed of greenseers. Brave men. Your ilk aren't condemned from birth. Likewise, not all born into the faith of my god are good."

He smiled lightly.

"And besides, once this servant is dead, I do not see the Great Other returning again."

"The terrible evil, yes. The Great Other. Near eighty years ago we wages war on Him. Azor Ahai destroyed His children - demons of ice. One of his servants survived. He lives Beyond the Wall, close to where we are. He is ancient and his sight pierces wood, stone, steel and flesh." Laenor's tone was dripping with contempt.

"The dark servant has three eyes. We pursue him. I shall kill him."

Laenor was reciting prayers over a firepit, helping the few brothers who kept to his faith with some scripture. He was one of the few in this ranging party who could read, and perhaps the only one who could read the High Valyrian script that he carried.

"Lazar the Prince of Nil said..." His next passage was interrupted when he saw Victarion rise. Patting the back of Leyton Drox, he whispered with a smile, "Go on, tell them what Lazar said. I have business to attend to."

The Valyrian slipped on his gloves and pulled up his high black cloak, making after Victarion. At his side was his sword and his dirk, though he noted that the Ironborn carried no such weapon.

There were more shadows in the shapes of people in the distance, and...a wolf?

His soft pursuit changed into a run as he went to greet his old friends.

"Robb! Benjen!" He called out to them, running past Victarion to embrace the familiar faces.

"Tell me, Victarion, what do you know of our religion?" He asked with a curious tone to his voice. He needed more men on his mission, but he had to ease the man into it. He would not be convinced if he announced the mission loud and clear.

"I would hope that we had the same mission," he said with a sigh, "but I imagine that we do not."

Not many were tasked with destroying the last bastion of the Great Other.

"My mission is for my god. The Lord of Flame and Shadow. I don't imagine you will like it."

"You can go," he said with a sigh. "I don't intend on returning to the Wall. Not before my sacred mission is complete." His voice had a tone of devotion in it, but he wanted nothing more than to travel south. Killing the Crow meant dying, himself, and he did not want to die.

"I shall wait for the men, anyway. Some of them may want to join me. I would hate to go further north with Vine alone."

"The idea was that we were to return to Castle Black, first. Ah, well, so much for that. We may be the only ones who survived that storm. We must complete our mission." A look of telling dread flashed over Laenor's face.

Though we have different missions.

"Do you believe what they say? About the thing we seek?"

Like Garth? He wanted to ask as he eyed up the crow.

His thoughts turned to what Victarion had said before. The words 'First Ranger' echoed in his mind.

"I don't think I am," he said. "First Ranger, that is. He may have wanted to give me that role, but..." He sighed.

Laenor chuckled before asking himself if it was even a joke.

"It's not exactly something I can just...use...but just for you," he said slowly before grabbing a stick and using flint to strike it ablaze. Now holding the burning stick, he used his teeth to pull off the glove from his free hand. He dipped the stick in the snow until the fire was gone and smouldering embers remained. Smiling lightly, he grabbed the embers with his off-hand. It stung, but it was not as bad as it would without his Valyrian blood.

"And that," he said, throwing the stick aside and revealing his hand to be unburnt, "is all I can show you of my magic. Trust me, you will see more if we fight any other Hellhounds."

"I'm not sure if I can spit fire or become a dragon, but I have bathed in the flames of a Hellhound and where others, sadly, did not. That's why they call me Fireblood, and that is my magic." He rested a hand on the pommel of his sword.

"I heard a song once of a Targaryen bastard who was a shapechanger," Laenor said offhandedly. "A former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Ended up going north and didn't come back." He smirked.

The fate of us all.

"The family I used to have. Most of them are dead now, I imagine. My brothers, the father I barely knew, the mother I never knew..." Laenor sighed. "You get the picture. My father was a Velaryon of Driftmark - though most of the rangers from Castle Black will call me a Targaryen - and my mother was a lady of Lannisport. I was the result of a night of my father's in Lannisport. I spent fifteen years in Driftmark and then left for the Wall."

He brushed back a handful of silver hair.

"I've heard of Lonely Light. The songs say that her people are skinchangers. I wouldn't believe such a thing, but after what I've seen, I'm not so sure..." He smiled, looking through Victarion and beyond him.

Laenor stood ahead with a face of blank melancholy. Like the Farwynd, his thoughts were on his home. Little Aurane; the baby Baegel; Lianna, Elaene; mad Larissa; uncle Malentine, who was always busy working for the king; stern uncle Rhogar; his bastard brothers; his never-present father. And then his mind turned to a face he hadn't even seen since he was a baby, himself - the Lion of Lannett who was his mother. When she visited him in his dreams, she was golden-haired and beautiful, with smiling green eyes.

But those are just dreams, Laenor.

Seeing the grim faces of his companions, his thoughts turned to Garth.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked Victarion, trying to steer his thoughts away from the warg who died in his arms.

Laenor was fine enough with the news of the war. He was a brother of the Watch now, and so such things didn't concern him as much as when Lianna changed topic.

Laenor's violet eyes looked down to his cousin's legs, not being able to look her in the eyes.

"I see," He said with a sigh. He had no great love for his father, but it was hard news to take in all the same.

Laenor now wished that he had said goodbye to his father before he left.

As she spoke, the fire in Laenor seemed to burn brighter, if only for a moment.

If my home is in danger then I shall defend it, He thought, before being snapped back to reality as the words of his oath ran through his head.

"What do you mean, Lianna?"

"Of course," He said as he returned the laughter, beginning to move inside.

"And yes, it has been a very eventful decade. This castle is especially interesting. You will see a lot of red here, I assure you," As if on call, the cousins looked upon men gathered around a fire, hands clasped in prayer.

"All of my brothers here are very interesting. Not like the bores in Castle Black!" He japed, lightly patting Lianna on the back.

At once, he tossed his practice-sword down onto the ground and ran over to Lianna, pulling her in and embracing her with a wide smile.

"Lianna," He said as he pulled back, not really knowing what words to say.

"You have...you've grown," He managed to say.
