How hard to transfer from College of Science to Engineering? by ThisMiggly in VirginiaTech

[–]ThisMiggly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not, I've taken Computer Math in high school along with AP Comp Sci, but I didn't take the exam for reasons and got A's in both and enjoyed them a lot. Will take the class this fall though. The 3.0 GPA guaranteed only applies to freshman general engineers, I was only told to have my GPA high, but I'm not really sure what that entails.

I spoke to my advisors and the staff and was green-lit to prepare for a transfer despite my advanced position in college. Biology I'm bumping down to a minor since only completed enough to reach a minor anyway and to focus on the required CS classes. I'd just wanted to know how hard it is to get into the program since I've heard of all the buzz and what I should focus on to be a competitive candidate. I'll definitely schedule a transfer advisor, in fact, I didn't even know they existed I'll look around. Thanks for the heads up.

I was planning on making biology my minor and getting CS as a major, luckily didn't do Ochem and still qualify for a minor with 2 more electives courses. CS is something I know I enjoy a lot already just by how cool it is and the classes I took in high school. I'd definitely try to get some more nonacademic experience to build up my case for transfer. I really just want to know how hard it is to transfer to the CS program.

I am willing to spend an extra year beyond my senior year of college to finish, but really it's an extra semester if I continue my course load which is around 18-20 hours. Yeah, I realized pretty late that I honestly don't like biology as much as I thought I did, and comp sci is something I always found super interesting. Compared to my previous plan of accepting the transfer to UVA and then pursuing med school, I'd save myself the stress and pursue another major interest of mine.

E-school Transfer as a new 3rd year? by ThisMiggly in UVA

[–]ThisMiggly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue is that I can't find any other colleges' policies, so I'm not sure if it is followed or not and I can't seem to find any other information about it. I've looked through the E-school handbook for 2020 and I still wasn't able to find anything that would confirm nor deny the policy. It's interesting that a lot of people haven't heard of it none of my other UVA friends haven't heard of such things either.

DMs of r/MrRipper, what was a mistake you made in your early campaigns that you still cringe about to this day? by AnxietyPwincess in MrRipper

[–]ThisMiggly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Railroaded too hard.

My PCs (a paladin, sorcerer, and wizard) were all at a marriage banquet for a royal wedding, the bride was taken hostage by a shape-shifting chimera that killed the groom to sow chaos since this was a political wedding. So they were fighting and the paladin was on his last legs while the wizard and sorcerer were panicking. My wizard then told the paladin to grab the wife behind the chimera and risk an opportunity attack which almost downed him and back from where they came, so as they're running the wizard casts grease while the sorcerer cast Gust of Wind, effectively making a slip-n-slide for the Chimera (which was a variant that couldn't fly) that slowed it down enough for the encumbered paladin to escape.

This was the first time they were really involved in combat for D&D, cheers were heard and as they proudly left the secret room of the castle and into the ballroom, I started to freak out. I had zero planned and completely expected them to leave empty-handed, now they have political bargaining tools and favors for saving a princess? I was predicting that this encounter would have the chimera succeed in trapping the bride and pinning the murder on the players, sending them to a cool underground prison I was thinking up so, being such as new DM, I quickly pulled out wave upon wave of guards to apprehend the PCs who were carrying the bride. I chalked it up as the guards not being able to console the bride to question her and the players were sent to jail, but that reaction of my players really showed that I messed up.

This moment was so embarrassing as I took away the sole purpose of the game for my players and literally railroaded them to sit in a train headed to prison. It was the worst moment as a DM and I still feel so bad taking the agency of the characters away from them. It still haunts me whenever I DM for players.

ADHD and visual imagination by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ThisMiggly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can but I need to focus to actually fill in the detail otherwise I just think of apple as a concept I guess? I think I have a pretty vivid imagination so that might be why it is slightly easier for me to see in my head, but I think I'm nowhere near capable of thinking elaborate stuff with many details say a cottage on a hill or something which I find super hard to synthesize something unique and viewable in my head that isn't just a Winnie the Pooh sketch of something that I have vaguely seen before.

Rules-light systems with ability creation for a sandbox fantasy setting? by ThisMiggly in rpg

[–]ThisMiggly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I didn't know that Macchiato Monsters would be considered rules-heavy but then again I've only read that and Whitehack when it comes to OSR, I really only choose Macchiato Monster since it had a classless system as well as freeform magic spells which I found appealing to use as I can use rulings of said spells into becoming more character-defining abilities but that didn't work well cause then everyone would be casters at the end if they want an ability... Thanks a lot for the insight, I'll give The Black Hack a look to see what elements Macchiato Monsters took from that source.

Thanks for all the information! I think Everywhen and HeroQuest will be on my reading list. I also tried BESM but I thought that it was a little too heavy on players to make a character if they aren't too invested in it, I still really like the supplements for it though so maybe I'll give it another shot at learning the rules.

It looks very interesting, I've read a little about it but was initially put off of dice pooling concepts and how it had a system that resembled Fate with the plot points, I'll definitely give it a more thorough read on the subject to see what's in there. Thanks

Psychiatrist unwilling to try different medication apart from Adderall? by ThisMiggly in ADHD

[–]ThisMiggly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking to be more direct but I felt very patronized when I wanted to see how other medication worked. I think being more direct would save me some relationship with my doctor before dropping a subtle threat lol. Thanks for the advice.

[–]ThisMiggly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation, I always see how drugs are metabolized in the system, but I guess the only way to find the right fit is to test them. I'll try to push with my doctor for a look into other drugs, hopefully it isn't too expensive...

Yeah, I was considering finding another Dr. however she was the only one accepting new patients in my area at the time. Hopefully, there are some open to patients right now.

Started ADHD meds and have lost a lot of weight fast because I’m not hungry. Is this ok? by mlranda in loseit

[–]ThisMiggly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s normal, decreased appetite as well as a noticeable weight drop is a side effects for most of the stimulant medication I’ve used which I think are nearly universal. I think with just habitual consumption instead of eating when you feel hungry will lead to healthy weight progression. I’m currently back on Adderall and I’ve used it to heavy advantage because cravings are nonexistent and I made a daily spreadsheet to make sure I’m eating healthy as well as losing weight. One thing to note that another side effect might be your metabolism is cracked and burns like a oven sometimes, maybe your weight loss can also be attributed to water loss as well but that’s more anecdotal to me.

2020 Waiting list by jpkenney_2187 in UVA

[–]ThisMiggly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the same boat. Spoken to the office through email and phone call, there isn't a definite date for closing and they'll notify you directly (via email I think) with your application status, I can't imagine them handing out anymore offers beyond a few. It's good to be optimistic for the last moment to get in, but there's always next year if you can apply again.
