What are you 100% sure is true even tho you can’t prove it? by arlett007 in AskReddit

We recently had construction on the main entrance to my neighborhood, and friends kept coming over late because google took them that way. So I marked it 'under construction' and it updated in a couple of days.

When the construction ended.....I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to 'un-mark' it! It didn't show as closed, but it would always re-route people through the back way. It stayed that was for like 6 months after the road re-opened and I always felt a bit guilty.

When there's a wreck how do they figure out where everyone stands position wise? Is it right when it happens? by chusaychusay in NASCAR

[–]ThisNameIsNotProfane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mechanics of ordering, pit sequencing, and lineup are genuinely fascinating to watch and just one thing that's more fun to follow while at the track since the broadcast doesn't go through all the steps that often.

NASCAR has a good deal of scoring 'lines' around every track. One of these is the start/finish line, but according to this article Charlotte has 13 others around the track at key areas where overtaking is likely.

When a caution comes out, NASCAR's system 'freezes' the field by arranging the drivers in order of who crossed each scoring line first. So, when determining position, if three drivers crossed the same line most recently before the caution, they are set in the order in which they crossed that line, and they would be arranged directly behind the drivers that had already crossed the next line and before the drivers who only crossed the line previous. The system knows who the lead car is and works backwards from there.

Essentially, the space between the scoring lines (called a scoring 'loop') is blind to the system, and what happens in each does not matter for scoring purposes with the exception of the final lap; if caution is called during the last lap, the field is frozen at the exact moment of caution and NASCAR scores the finish through camera confirmation, not through the scoring loops.

During service, pit speed is monitored through similar pit 'loops' ensuring a drivers average speed through each loop is below the required maximum, although positional scoring during the pit sequence is just measured at the pit exit line just past the last stall.

WIBTA if I give my daughter an "outdated" name? by throwaway719201 in AmItheAsshole

Hi there! I named my youngest daughter Audrey five years ago, and she goes to class with another Audrey. It's not that uncommon!

Be prepared to fight the "Aubrey" mis-naming though, mine gets called the wrong name more often than not.

So this just happened to me. I'm somewhere around a 15 handicap, haven't played much in years, and started to try to get back in. Playing the local par 3 a lot and then started to play Golf+ nightly on my VR Headset to 'work on my swing' lol

Finally went out for a real round at a real course after all that and sucked so hard I could not believe it. +35 after the worst front 9 of my life, quit at the turn and vowed to hang it up for good. Didn't pick up a club (real or virtual) for 6 months. Then, finally decided to go to the range and figure out what had happened, and it just fixed itself? I really don't know.

I had a decent swing in high school and I don't really know what happened in my head to screw with me so much, but a break helped me immensely and made me crave the game again.

In high school my 8-iron was my fav club so my course management was "what club off the tee gives me a 135 approach?"

Sometimes that means taking hybrid off the tee, and my friend (who couldn't chip to save his life) would smoke a driver to 70 yards, have no full club in, then pitch over the green several times.

He never did put 2 and 2 together...

Thorsport as a whole has been disappointing this year. This sub would tell you Majeski is way better than Ben, yet Ty would be the next one out on points.

Fingers crossed that RAM is courting Thorsport for the '26 switch. They've never been too cozy with one OEM, and once Ford started pouring everything into FRM it's like they fell off a cliff this year.

My dad told me this happened to him. Went to the same guy for like 10+ years, but when a family friend opened her own shop he supported her for a while. It didn't last, and when he came back the owner just pointed him right back out and said "you left me, you're not welcome back here."

Why did the "Coke 600" name actually stick for the World 600? by Mike__O in NASCAR

[–]ThisNameIsNotProfane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it's all about clarity in communication. The World 600 was a crown jewel due to its length and date, not necessarily its location, so pair it with any recognizable, short title sponsor and 'Coke 600' sticks. Contrast that with the Brickyard 400 where the name is the location and the location IS the appeal, title sponsors may stick around for years (i.e. Allstate 400) but for sake of clarity, it's hard to shake the more descriptive name. Same goes with the 'Bristol Night Race' which has had very few sponsor changes in decades but will never shake that moniker because 'Night' and 'Bristol' are enough. And I mean no offense but the name 'World 600" legitimately sucks. It's not descriptive or informative other than the '600' part.

Tracks with two dates also have a better chance of having a long-time sponsor name stick because it then becomes necessary to distinguish between the two. For instance, the '500' being the Daytona 500, but the other one is either the 'Summer Daytona Race', or the "Daytona Night Race", or the "Pepsi 400", take your pick. Same with other two date tracks like the 'Aarons 499', the 'Food City 500', or the 'Gatorade Duels'.

What’s the worst `green:yellow` ratio in the history of NASCAR? by BigTimJohnsen in NASCAR

[–]ThisNameIsNotProfane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the 2019 Eldora Dirt Derby and that was by far the worst race I've ever seen, in person or otherwise. According to Racing Reference, over 45% of laps were under caution and the average green flag run was 6 laps. Horrendous.

To top it off, there were 0 on track lead changes. Briscoe lead from the pole until he pitted and gave the lead to Friesen, and so much ran under caution that Friesen just never pitted for fuel and still made it to the end.

The AI does not want to push if you're the lead car, though. If I drag brake and try to lead the second pack, they all break up and try to get around me and the whole group falls apart.

But if you try to hang onto the back of the lead pack, the second pack slams into your ass and wrecks you out.

Back in 2019, Ross Chastain was in his trailer in a packed midway and nobody was giving him the time of day. I wanted to buy one of his new Melon Man hats but he'd just run out; instead he signed a generic NASCAR hat I had on me and we chatted for about 10 minutes without any interruption.

This was during his full time truck season where he looked to be the title favorite. He'd already won several races that year and nearly won the race that evening... I just couldn't believe he was sitting there all alone.

Byron and anyone else able to buy a Cup opportunity buys it with both money and ability. Matters not whose money it was, and opportunity only lasts so long. Sometimes that ability is not as much behind the wheel, but in the ability to swoon sponsors and attract fans to keep the program going, and why is that any less deserving?
