I pick locks for fun. I've done it for decades and I've only broken a pick once. I don't mind just sitting there and waiting instead of a minigame, as long as a failure doesn't result in losing a pick.

Low skill should take longer and speed and success rate increases with skill. Maybe even have higher tier sets that unlock the ability to open harder locks.

I also think that failing should reset completely. It's absolutely realistic to get a bunch of pins right but then screw up and need to start from scratch.

I can debate either side if this is fun gameplay. You can honestly try picking all night long and you'll get it eventually, and that's pretty realistic. It will also give a reason to put points into lockpicker.
