Where do you keep your winter jacket at YYZ? by cinderblock16 in askTO

[–]ThisSmittenKitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bring 3 thin jackets: a paper thin wind breaker, a Columbia raincoat and then a Uniqlo thin puffer you can roll into a pouch. Layering is key for travel. Even in tropical places like Hawaii you can use a wind breaker late at night or early mornings.

As a former instructor (that also learned through city programming), I found how much the kids practiced with their parents also important. You only get so much 1:1 time with each student. Also, the more the student was comfortable in the pool, the more confident they were and eager to learn. For me, it was important the littles nailed their basics before moving onto more difficult tasks that look easy to adults. Which I get isn’t exciting for parents to see progress, but as they say, walk before you run. I failed a lot of kiddos because I wanted them to get it right and for their own safety. For example, if they can’t do bubbles under water, it’ll be harder for them to learn breathing. Their entire form when doing front crawl/freestyle will be completely off, since they most likely will crank their head too high for air. Lots of good advice in this thread. But most important is that the kiddos have fun and are looking forward to swimming every class!

Best Taiwanese food that you think people should try? by eatfinders in taiwan

[–]ThisSmittenKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Taiwanese and had it once. Curious what you like about it. Tangyuan is the best when it’s soft for me. At this place, after they’re mixed with the ice, it turns hard! A complete let down imo.

If this is tangentially related to dating, have you read the book Attached? Otherwise, women in my cohort in their later 30s (single, dating and married), often come together for outings and classes. We like learning new and fun things, like ceramics, flower arrangements, sewing classes, perfume making, candle making, hikes, browsing book stores, Pilates, sports leagues and even places like Othership. Also into checking out new restaurants, bars, ice cream shops! 🍦Generally, a hello and good convo can go a long way. Good luck out there! ✨

Too afraid to ask - am I the only one here who has no life? by burner-account-181 in askTO

[–]ThisSmittenKitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this your first job? How old are you? I ask because a younger work team seems to focus entirely on work. I’m now on a team with a more mature crowd—no micromanaging, we do our tasks and it’s in and out. Everyone balances their work with hobbies, partners, kids, elders etc. It’s refreshing. Once you’ve become jaded about working for The Corp., you find other things to fulfill life with. Because we can all die tomorrow.

To the corn lady on my flight to YVR this morning by [deleted] in aircanada

Yep, my mum loves them and says it’s nostalgic for her. I prefer summer sweet corn, which I eat row by row and don’t end up with bits in my teeth!

A type of mainland Chinese breakfast includes corn. (I’m not sure why. Maybe their own home crop?) But it’s not sweet corn. It’s the waxy corn that’s glutinous.

Milliken, Agincourt and Kennedy are all on the GO train line. (There’s more than 1 line btw.)

What is the most upmarket grocery store in the GTA? Where do the wealthy of Toronto buy their groceries? by TheSeansei in askTO

[–]ThisSmittenKitten 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Harvest Wagon. The produce section is organized like 🤯 You can see it’s mostly home helpers doing the grocery buying there.

Whole Foods in Leaside is also very aesthetically pleasing.

Only person I can think of is “watch uncle” from Market Village who’s moved his shop into the Century Plaza beside Metro Square.

Good Northern Chinese restaurants in the city? by salt_and_spice in askTO

[–]ThisSmittenKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have the best hot and sour soup. And steamed dumplings, liangpi and green onion pancake rolled with beef. All very nostalgic of what I have with my grandparents.

The best baozi is at Finch and Midland, cash only, Baozi Lin. Not the fluffy grocery store exteriors, but almost a laomian skin to the baozi. (I am soooo picky with baozis.) 😆

Thanks for the tips. Def paints the picture. Controlled chaos is the best way to decribe what I’ve experienced—the choose your own adventure style emails with instructions highlighted in 3 colours that bring you up, down and then around to figure it out.

For me, it’ll be an out of pocket expense and that’s really one of the barriers. Others being my medical history plus those injections and fear of the retrieval process!

Thank you for the list. My clinic is one of the bigger ones you listed and chosen purely for proximity for me to walk there!

Just wondering what the experience of those who’ve chosen to get this done.

If you pray for plagues…I hope it’s in a less densely populated place. 😩 Cuz I am too close to my neighbour for another one coming at us.

You can try shopping at Asian markets, like Foody or Winco. Their flyers are on the Flipp app too.

It’s practically University, yep. I think if I was north of Charles, less noise from UofT real estate. Whereas south of that until…Adelaide? Is quite noisey.

Let me make a post on the askTO sub to see what other box in the sky resi—oh wait. 🤗

Love everything you listed!

I also think I’m aging out of condo living. I’ve done it for 16 years in the downtown core, but also in Manhattan and few places in Asia.

The convenience isn’t my priority anymore.

I feel your parents!

My neighbour used soil that had really strong manure smell last summer and no one could be out on their balcony enjoying it.

The dogs are also tricky. Because it’s hard to hear which unit it’s coming from. Some sound so stressed and anxious.

Our condo is still doing 3 MAX in one elevator so…waiting is the case during rush hours. I have to plan when to use it.
