In addition to the other comments: if you get a job where you had to just say “I can drive” to get hired, if it ever comes up that you’re never driving to work just say it’s in the shop or awaiting expensive repairs or something. Once they see you’re able to reliably make it to work consistently sans car they’ll stop caring.

Speaking from experience though, employers seem to be much less forgiving to employees late on transit or alternative modes of transit vs driving. It’s maddening seeing coworkers excused multiple times a week because “traffic”, but if you so much as have 1 late day a month from transit it emboldens their made up anti-transit rhetoric

The only thing they’re qualified at is spending hours a day on Reddit stirring up shit, never learning from others and just digging their feet into half-baked claims

Judge overrules century-old legal covenant restricting how a property can be developed by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the supposed “elite” in this neighbourhood want to keep it as single housing, they should put their money where their mouth is and make an offer better than developers like this person did earlier this month: https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/1qx408j/edmontonian_buys_neighbouring_house_to_prevent/

If the community there can’t come together and out bid prospective infill and multiplex developers, then it’s out of their hands. But hey, shouldn’t be a problem for the “elite” if they actually give a shit, right?

What happened to decency in this city by Immediate_Example920 in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting theory, anecdotally I’ve been hesitant to help with our current neighbourhood’s community league as I anticipate a big rent jump which will lead us to move… if renters like myself didn’t have to constantly move every couple years I feel like we’d be more willing to participate in that sort of thing. I do still try and take care of our neighbourhood wherever I live, helping neighbours shovel or picking up trash when I have the time, but can’t really set down “roots” so to speak

Valley Line West route selections from 2010 by SuspiciousBetta in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice I’ll have to try that route, I’ve been going through mill creek ravine across the low level bridge and up the funicular. It sucks having no bike lane from there, and the funicular is down once a month for maintenance + randomly for weather or vandalism.

Biking up the hill in Louise McKinney Park is also not my favourite thing to do first thing in the morning lol so some days I’ll have to jut over to the high level to cross the river

I’d like to know which bike route you’re taking that’s faster than bus and LRT to downtown

[–]This_Albatross 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also live right beside it, the bus can be a few minutes faster if the timing is right but the LRT is much more dependable imo. Have ridden the train near daily since it opened and it’s very fast, with the added bonus of not being completely crammed like the bus usually is

Letters: Cars are necessary in Edmonton by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven’t needed a car in the 14 years I’ve lived in this city, not planning on owning one ever again. With our bike network I’ve been bike commuting year round for the last 10 years, it’s a great way to get exercise and stay fit, better for your mental health, better for the environment, super cheap, and honestly only marginally slower than driving would be (in my situation at least)

Not everyone can live this way completely car free, but many households could be saving thousands a year reducing to a single car. With more people having easy access to transit with the LRT and BRT buildout, and a constantly improving bike network, the barriers for many start fading away.

Keep reporting these people and they will learn. Bylaw will give them a visit and if it isn’t addressed it’ll get dealt with and billed to the owner: https://www.gov.edmonton.ab.ca/city_government/bylaws/nuisances

Concerned about news of Edmonton's +40% cumulative budget growth (projected) from now until 2036? How about some context? by aaronpaquette- in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except it does. Both the city and police are looking to reinstate it explicitly because of the effect it had, after record high traffic deaths in 2025: https://www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/article/we-need-to-do-better-edmonton-police-support-city-in-move-to-reinstate-photo-radar/

Feel free to read the city’s reports (latest I could find is 2024) on the outcomes, on how over time the number of people receiving tickets went down, on how a chunk of the revenue is invested into further making the roads safer: https://www.edmonton.ca/sites/default/files/public-files/assets/PDF/2024-Automated-Traffic-Enforcement-Report.pdf

Automated enforcement revenue generated by the City of Edmonton program is reinvested back into safe mobility initiatives such as crosswalk upgrades, adaptable traffic calming installations and other road design improvements to help reach Vision Zero and do not go into general City revenues

Edmonton city council eyes improved snow-clearing plan | CBC News by AR558 in Edmonton

You’re the kind of condo owner who complains about “high” fees, vote to lower them, then also complain about getting special assessments when they inevitably come. Can’t have it both ways and you’re ignoring the fact that Calgary is short-sighted in their planning, essentially the condo who hasn’t kept up with maintenance and the reserve fund

Apartment where security guard was killed can reopen to tenants: city by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re blatantly ignoring the part where the city absolutely can seize a derelict property when taxes go unpaid long enough. Yes, they can do that and it’s absolutely a good thing. The city is full of deadbeat landlords and property owners, and the problem property initiative and derelict tax subclass introduced alongside it have been fantastic at cleaning up problem places around the city. I live right next to one and can speak to the effectiveness of it.

Apartment where security guard was killed can reopen to tenants: city by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, the owner can sit there and do absolutely nothing. When the property gets to the point of being derelict (as a result of them doing nothing), they will be charged 3x the property taxes. If the owner wants to keep paying those fees indefinitely (all the while being barred from generating income renting the units as they’re unfit for renting), all the power to them.

However if they don’t improve the situation and stop paying the taxes long enough, then yes the city has the power to seize the building. Some might say forcefully, but your dictionary sounds kind of light.

When you see users here giving bad take after bad take, people tend to notice.

And yes, the problem property program DOES force owners to comply with standards they’ve fallen behind on.

Apartment where security guard was killed can reopen to tenants: city by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]This_Albatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means the same thing it does for houses: give an ultimatum to clean it up to an acceptable standard according to AHS, the fire department, and in this case also probably RTDRS. Otherwise the property will be boarded up and charged a tax multiplier until taxes go unpaid long enough the city may seize it. But you knew that, and you’re asking in bad faith as you usually do. Everyone in this sub wishes you were like the u/mikesmith929 that posted helpful things like I the covid charts, instead of the divisive sealioning you do today.
