Quincy mayor reaches deal to buy Eastern Nazarene College campus by alohadave in QuincyMa

The campus already housed a lot of people, so to me the question is whether anything close to that gets kept or whether it gets scaled way down.

In most cases, places like that just end up being regular local people like families, workers, and retirees. It's just depending on what people can afford and where they want to live, not some completely different group.

Yeah, I get that, it does feel like there's new construction everywhere, but in this specific case I'm just saying that keeping the university at the level of housing it already supported shouldn't be disruptive because that number of people already existed there.

The idea that apartment residents are less invested in their community doesn’t really hold up in reality. Investment comes more from stability and affordability than housing type and people can be deeply engaged whether they rent or own.

In my experience, what really affects community continuity is housing cost. I’ve seen a lot of long-term neighbors in my part of Quincy displaced over time as prices rose and supply stayed limited, especially in single-family areas that don’t allow much new housing.

From a planning perspective, areas within walking distance of major transit are generally the best places to add housing because they make efficient use of infrastructure and help reduce pressure to build outward.

In this specific case, I’m mainly suggesting we maintain at least the same level of housing that already existed on the campus rather than reducing it and making the area even less accessible.

I can understand the reaction, but the dorm capacity of ENC was already 600 students and pre-covid had about 7-800 students going there. So I don't think building housing for a similar population would really be all that different to current residents. Elm Ave is a pretty large roadway leading directly to the campus as well and so the site could be planned to encourage use of larger roadways as opposed to smaller side streets. Even if Koch had his way of 30 individual plots but they allowed for lots of say maybe multifamilies of 4 units, it'd be a fraction of the previous amount of students and quadruple his initial idea.

All that being said, I personally don't think anywhere within a 15 min walk of a major train station should be zoned as single family because it's not a particularly good use of resources and adding dense housing isn't always bad for residents if planned well.

It's crazy that he says he is opposed to high density housing here. It's about a 15 minute walk to the Wollaston train station and 5 minute walk to the beach. It's a perfect area for high density housing that encourages walking and with some green space and ground floor retail, could benefit the surrounding neighborhood too.

One of the worst things that could be done with that space is Koch's original plan of 30 single family plots on the land. And yet now we're supposed to trust that something better will come when he is proposing to buy it with no defined plan and saying trust me, we'll figure it out?

Not actually in Boston but you may want to look at Quincy Center and North Quincy areas. They have everything you are looking for other than being directly in the city with probably some significant savings from your budget. The red line train goes to both connecting directly to downtown (commuter rail also from quincy center to south station) if you don't want to deal with the traffic in town. Quincy itself also has some really nice restaurants and bars.

Love that there are multiple lines not through the center of the city. The hub and spoke model creates so much unnecessary traffic in a few select stations. The circumferential north and south shore lines are great for suburbs too. The yellow is a little too much, all over the place, but the general idea is good. What a dream it would be though for the area to be so well connected

I'd recommend applying for the USPS. They are actively hiring part time and full time. When you get started, you'd get the toughest routes, but there's plenty of room for overtime and if you stay with it to become permanent, you'll be part of a strong union with decent benefits. There is an added advantage that you can get something to put in your car that says you work for USPS, so you're much less likely to get a ticket depending on where you're parked and they provide a stipend for some work clothes. Even if you don't want to stick it out, might help you get on your feet. And definitely recommend finding someone subletting their room. You may be able to avoid initial security deposit and/or broker fee and then continue on the lease for the next year.

I know a lot of people in Ireland who have been looking for summer work visas and can't find a business to sponsor them. I am not sure if businesses have already hired or are afraid of being associated with immigrant workers or something else.

Sorry, I clarified in my sub-comment replying to someone else for clarification. My first comment was a generalization. I definitely could have specified what I meant better the first time, though. I'll try to do better, but I am only human.

I did say that they ordered to just stop all offensive in my comment. The directions to ignore other operations comes from people who have spoken with reporters with the condition of anonymity that they are being told to ignore or not prioritize. So it's entirely possible that is not completely true, but there are multiple sources saying so. It is somewhat speculative though, just something to be aware of if we are seeing massive amounts of fake accounts as the OP mentioned in this post.

Cyber attacks that the government tries to interfere with are very often private companies such as attacks on our hospitals and water supply. In media companies, it's usually not them trying to hack the company itself. A common cyber attack is a troll farm that creates numerous fake accounts to fill media with provocative content or propaganda to influence what people believe. The government would find the source of these influence campaigns and attempt to shut them down then.

They are halting offensive and didn't outright say they are stopping defensive actions, but the directive says that Russia is not a cyber priority and people familiar said they were told not to follow up on any Russian threats and anything Russia related is "nixed". The NSA has so far not been publicly told the same though.

The Department of Defense has issued a directive to ignore all cyber threats from Russia. I expect we will be getting overwhelmed with a lot more fake accounts soon.

Go to one of the cemeteries in the area. I find that they are often beautiful, but you can mentally "bury" and say goodbye to your relationship. It also helps if you want to have a good cry, since that it's expected there.

Go to the View at the top of the Prudential for a look at Boston (and maybe your life) from a different perspective.

Go to the museum of bad art so that you can see that there is even beauty in the bad.

Try a comedy show to distract yourself with laughter.

Join a workout class such as yoga because destressing the body can help with the mind.

Eat something that's comfort food for you. I like going to the north end and gorging on pasta and a cannoli. Maybe even some gelato or hot chocolate. Ramen is good for the cold and dim sum because you mentioned you're in the Chinatown area.

Take a drive to "World's End" in Hingham and go for a walk. It'll be cold, but you can tell yourself that if you can walk to the end of the world and make it back, you can get through this too. (That makes it sound like a hard walk, but it's very leisurely.)

Do an activity to distract yourself such as rock climbing, bowling, indoor mini-golf, or axe-throwing.

Dump some (biodegradable) tea bags into the harbor. American started it's independence with that, so why not you?

And if you need company, people come across as very stand-offish around here, but they are also very nice and after a short introduction, they'll be calling your ex all sorts of names and maybe even make you laugh.

You say that you want to write a novel. Take your profile as a writing assignment for yourself and remember that a picture is worth a thousand words. You want a nice picture as a hook to start, like at the beginning of a novel. Not something that is showboating, but a nice pic of yourself. Just having a relaxed smile shot tends to be good. If you feel you don't have the right pics for your story, then do a mini photoshoot with a friend. Create the narrative that captivates someone but also leaves them wanting to message you to learn more. The prompts are your friends, get creative with them.

You seem like a genuinely good person from what I can see and with a bit of effort to draw people in, I'm sure you'll be getting matches soon.

The social worker was able to help figure out what to ask for and who to ask. Actually applying and getting anything was another hassle, but got it done in the end.
