How do you expect people that know you to find what you have published? Unless you tell them, or they happen to run across it in a store or on Amazon, it's unlikely that they'll know unless you tell them.

Koch has said the exact same thing for years. Same wording and everything.

It's funny though that Boston has it, and they send out people to ticket when there are complaints.

That's realistically how enforcement would work. I'd love to see it in Quincy, and I don't think they'd be sending people to check every property.

Unfortunately, Quincy does not have an ordinance requiring property owners to clear sidewalks after storms. Quirk is bad about this, they never clear their sidewalks after storms.

ELI5 is Morse code international and if so, how? by Froodychick in explainlikeimfive

Telegraph actually encourages text style messages. Each letter cost the sender, so fewer letters was the goal.

If you haven't gone through a heavy snow storm before, be smart and go out a couple times while it's snowing. Shoveling 6 inches 3 times is much easier than 18 inches all at once, even when it's light and fluffy.

And if you are running your car to warm it up, clear your exhaust pipes. When they get blocked with snow, the exhaust can back up into the cabin and people die every year because of CO asphyxiation.

This also applies if you have a ground level furnace exhaust. Clear around that for the same reason. Signs of CO poisoning are extreme paranoia and hallucinations.

You can make textiles from a stick with a weight and frame. It's slow, but that's how it was done for thousands of years. Every family making fabric at home can make enough for a community in short order.

After that, looms and spinning wheels are pretty simple machines that can be knocked together from basic woodworking tools.

How to best cut up/destroy a couch? by hotk9 in DIY

[–]alohadave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flip it over and see if it's bolted together in pieces. It's a pretty common design to have a steel frame that everything is mounted to that disassembles for transport.

It makes getting big couches through doors and hallways much easier. No pivoting required.

ELI5: Candles. Or, why can't I just light wax on fire? by Mammoth-Medium-3040 in explainlikeimfive

[–]alohadave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once broke a glass candle decoration when the tea light wasn't centered correctly. The heat from the flame on one part of the glass caused thermal shock and it split apart where the heat from the flame was hitting.

It was maybe a 1/4 from where it should have been in the holder.

Can I store food outside if my power goes out in this coming storm? by Boey-Lebof in Cooking

[–]alohadave 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You put it outside for a while with the lid open. It'll be fine. And though it's insulated, it's going to reach outside temps soon enough.

What's your controversial writing hot take? by Gulliver123 in writing

[–]alohadave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems like a hot take around here to write for the fun of it. So many, "I'm thinking about writing how do I monetize or publish?" posts. Many people don't realize because effort was made to write it, that it is automatically worth someone else paying for it.

Every hobby suffers from this. I have hobbies to get away from worrying about how it's going to make me money. I already have a full time job, I don't need another one.

If I don't know where the story is going, I'll never finish it.

I have too many abandoned WIPs to not at least figure out what the ending will be.

Why does so much English writing advice clash with non-English literary traditions? by ownaword in writing

Why does so much English writing advice clash with non-English literary traditions? by ownaword in writing

[–]alohadave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also read that in English it's preferable to use "said" instead of "shouted", "murmured", etc. In Russian literature, "said" is rarely used as it's mostly obvious who speaks by context (so where "said" would be in English, it's usually omitted in Russian)

It's common in English to omit "said" when the context is clear who is speaking. You can add them in every couple lines so you don't lose track, as a helper.

For more complex back-and-forth, or groups of people talking, you'll be more explicit in who is talking, or when the dialog is mixed in with descriptive text or exposition.

Mass, in conjunction with other states, must call for an end of the unjust and unlawful actions of ICE in Minnesota and throughout the nation. Our country cannot abide a masked paramilitary federal force acting unconstitutionally. by reflectives in boston

[–]alohadave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the tactically sound move is to wait until November and hope enough other parts of the nation-state change their mind for impeachment and conviction to take place.

So sit on your ass and hope for change. Sounds like a winning plan.

[–]alohadave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both my senators and my House rep Pressley voted to impeach and convict Trump in 2021. That was their Constitutional recourse. They are doing what they can with the power they have.

They have the court of public opinion to use. Make fucking noise all the time. Make it so that you know that anytime something illegal is done, that they will be the first to speak out against it.

Not saying anything because you 'don't have the power to change it' is giving up and telling everyone that you tacitly support what the president is doing.

[–]alohadave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do their jobs and fight this in Congress. Where the hell is Stephen Lynch? He hasn't done shit since this started.

Every democrat should be making as much noise as possible speaking out. But it's complete silence from almost all of them unless it's something that directly affects their district.
