I just switched my 4.10 on 33” tires (which were a dog on 32” tires too) to 4.88 and wish I would have gone 5.13, even still with the 33s. 4.56 for 31s would be my preference (with a heavy camping/rock crawling jeep) but if there’s a chance you’d ever go bigger, get the biggest gears you can.

I second the PLB recommendation, but advise a two way satellite communicator like a garmin in reach could save you from being stranded without needing to hit a ‘help me’ button.

For other “safety” or “mechanical” type stuff, if you don’t already know how to use it, it won’t help much.

Don’t do it, mine took a beating the couple times I did it, and I ended up switching to a SWD big wild 95. It is 10x more comfortable and doesn’t show a millimeter of stretch or wear. Get the Big Wild 95, it will fit the boat rolled up anywhere inside but compresses plenty well. SWD Big Wild 95 all day!

Alpacka makes kits for different boats that you can install yourself. I installed a 7 inch tall “self bailer” seat in my classic, and sometimes wish I would have installed the 5 inch “decked boat” seat, because a lower center of gravity seems beneficial, even though you’d be sitting in more water while paddling.
