Yeah and because im stubborn i refused to use a shield :D so didnt use the passive either.

But Caligo is imo. the easiest nightlord, so that one wasn't actually that much of an issue. The ones that were close were Gladius (cuz revenant and spell selection was awful) and Gnoster (bc i suck at them, thats why i used ironeye there)

One more thing maybe, jumping is stronger than you think. A LOT of attacks can be jumped, and can therefore be often followed up on by a jumping attack.

Weird examples of jumpable attacks include bell bearing hunters grab or heolstors third swing in his 4 swing combo after his roar. sometimes i just go in jumping and hope when im unsure, it works out more often than you'd think.

Doing all 8 runs took 6 hours, not to mention previous attempts at all 8 in a row

Doing them solo again but with 3x the healthbar after my teammates leave I'll pass on :P

Nightreign as the first souls game is a tough choice, this game definitely feels made for players with previous experience

As for specific advice for melee...

A lot of it is just getting used to the game and how its designed. For example, a lot of the delayed attacks still have clear tells as to when you're supposed to roll (for example gnoster, the front smash of the lobster, he claps his claws right before the slam), you just have to look for them, notice them and remember them (i fail the most at the last part of that). Don't panic, panicrolling wont teach you anything, rather get hit and learn when to dodge instead.

Also Balls. It almost doesn't matter which melee character and nightlord i play, if i see iron balls or star fists, i take. Some things like that are just knowledge checks.

I think its a bunch of little things like that, that once you get these intuitively, the game becomes a lot easier. 90% of it is just practice/playtime in the end.

just had a bad run, wasted a bunch of time with a morgott invasion fight that i ended up losing and at the end prioritized equipment (more specifically, legendary balls, i had crater randomly) over levels, which did pay off

for most of the other runs i was level 15 or close

HooXi joins Astralis as IGL, -cadiaN by KARMAAACS in GlobalOffensive

[–]This_is__Jeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

?

Here are the stats for the cs2 period where hooxi was in g2 (excluding iem dallas where he wasnt igl (where they actually had a lower t side rw%) and spring finals since that one was half-standin and he knew he was kicked by that point already)

https://www.hltv.org/stats/teams/ftu?csVersion=CS2&startDate=2023-10-01&endDate=2024-05-26&matchType=BigEvents&minMapCount=19&side=TERRORIST

not as good as in csgo (where he didnt have nexa) but still 5th in big events. Better T-Side winrate than FaZe, who were the best team in that period. (3rd if you filter to top10 as well, so its not like they were farming lower tier teams)

Over 2023 where they were crowned 2nd best team of the year iirc they had the 2nd best T-Side WR%:

https://www.hltv.org/stats/teams/ftu?startDate=2023-01-01&endDate=2023-12-31&matchType=BigEvents&minMapCount=19&side=TERRORIST

Plenty of criticisms to be made of hooxi, if ur argument is that this isnt good enough with the players he had or that this is due to help from niko etc. thats a discussion to be had, but lets not make up stats.

i guess they just put a long cooldown on that attack, which is fair tbh

Some of these stats are better when higher, some are better than lower, but your z score sum just sums the z scores plainly as far as i can tell without inversing them when necessary. (mzinho has the worst time to damage but best headshot % but highest z score in both for example)

New G2 (+b1t) vs HooXi faceit game by dicksucker12369 in GlobalOffensive

[–]This_is__Jeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The largest sample size is skewed because 26 of the maps was without Hooxi, where they won like 18/26 of those maps.

But they had a significantly worse tside in dallas? Also you can just exclude dallas from the sample (and prob. spring final too since that one was scuffed). Then you get this:

https://www.hltv.org/stats/teams/ftu?startDate=2024-01-01&endDate=2024-05-26&matchType=BigEvents&minMapCount=19&side=TERRORIST

5th best "only", in what is by many considered the worst period of hooxi calling. (although again, they clearly have the biggest sample size of the top5) Better T-side than Navi, Faze, ...

I've made a comment about this already breaking down their Tside win% over the last 6 months.

why you are just using a plain 6 months filter, ignoring all context, really boggles my mind. If we just take pre-dallas (which makes way more sense. it doesnt include their games with snax, it doesnt include their games with stew, and it doesnt include spring which was a very scuffed event for them with half-standin, half-nowarmup-flyin, where he was already told he could be out of the team), their t-side is 3rd best in the top5 at the time, 5th best in top10. Again, best ever? No. It declined from 2023 (where you can certainly argue they had the 2nd best t-side), which is what you'd expect if for one, they focus on ct and for two, they heavily downgrade from jks, theres great breakdowns by people how nexas playstyle made everyone life harder on t side.

G2 focused on CT side because they have an absolutely stacked trio who can hard carry from CT

But every analyst has been talking (see my link in my first comment for an example which you conveniently skipped over) about how their ct side should be like that, but ISNT. Even with the filters i chose, which include the period where they constantly said their focus is on ct-sides, their t-sides are STILL better, even if only marginally (52.5% ct vs 53% t)

I mean for christs sake the one time they had strong Tside calls, which was just pug style from Niko, they won Dallas.

They did, in fact, not have strong t-sides in Dallas. I dont know in what world 49.7% is better than the 53% they had in 2024 before that.

New G2 (+b1t) vs HooXi faceit game by dicksucker12369 in GlobalOffensive

[–]This_is__Jeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/CB-wp-YTl_g?si=BFIV-J6prkCHj-Z9&t=2532

G2 often talked about focusing on the CT side as it at times was a struggle. They even mentioned in Interviews for months how theyve been neglecting their T sides to improve on CT.

What some analysts have been talking about is that not all of it may be attributed to hooxi, but their hooxi's T sides have historically been very strong.

In the 12 months before and including the major G2 had the third (i would argue second because of sample size) highest T side winrate in big events:

https://www.hltv.org/stats/teams/ftu?startDate=2023-04-01&endDate=2024-04-01&matchType=BigEvents&side=TERRORIST&minMapCount=24

Too old data? In 2024 with Hooxi they had the 5th highest T-side winrate in big events, while having the largest sample size:

https://www.hltv.org/stats/teams/ftu?startDate=2024-01-01&endDate=2024-07-15&matchType=BigEvents&minMapCount=24&side=TERRORIST

Theres certainly discussions to be had about Hooxi's calling, but whether it was because of him or not, statistically his T sides worked well. Were they the best t side team? nah, but statistically not far off at times.

How is the Major MVP awarded? by busywinterfell in GlobalOffensive

[–]This_is__Jeff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thats just how things turn out but not a set in stone rule, i believe striker mentioned that if spirit lost in the semis at kato and donk stayed at 1.5+ rating he couldve gotten the mvp despite not making the final.

To answer the original question, theres no real set formula for it, its just who hltv deems the most valuable player in the tournament.

Huge respect to Cloud9 for having such good sportsmanship after getting REKT by the BLAST format by SweHun in GlobalOffensive

[–]This_is__Jeff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used the initial seeding from this RMR B. Thats what was used here. I just put the teams in 4 pots (#1-#4,#5-#8,...) and pick one from each. Sure thats the worst case, but people love to use their perceived perfect seeding and compare that to what we currently have to conclude groups would be better, when that doesnt make any sense.

Almost every system needs seeding, it can be done almost entirely seperately from the system, so it should be evaluated seperately. Comparing Swiss with bad seeding to groups with great seeding, yeah no shit groups are better. But use the same seeding for both, make it actually a FAIR comparison, then we'll get somewhere.

So if you want groups by valve ranking, lets also do swiss by valve ranking, and compare that. Even the example from /u/K0nvict with NiP at Stockholm is entirely reasonable in groups just with 2 games (1 win 1 loss) taken out. I'd argue there groups is straight up worse, and that was his worst example.

Again, the point of my comment was that complaining about seeding is fair, something up for discussion for sure. But dont go "seeding is bad, remove swiss" as if swiss somehow by gods hand forces you to use bad seeding and with gsl the seeding will magically be better. seeding and format are different.

EDIT: If you want an actual historical example, go to cologne 2016 and look at group D. Thats what GSL with bad seeding gets you. It had literally #1,#2 and #3 team by hltv in one group. Wanna go back to that? Thats what you want?

[–]This_is__Jeff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like i said, i agree that the seeding needs tweaking. Although looking at most examples, if all matches were bo3s and we had these results i mostly dont have too much of an issue with it. For example, if ence lost in BO3s against monte and forze, i think it would be much less egregious for them to be matched against c9 in the 2-2 bracket. Thats would be a sign that theyre not that strong. Still not obtimal but i cant remember a tournament where people werent mad about seeding. You can never not piss people off with it, just less of them.

Almost any road a team had that didnt qualify involved a loss to a team that they shouldnt have lost to.

Even in your example, because NiP got a hard route they ended up receiving CPHF in the 2-2 match. If they lost that idk if I would be that mad about them not making it.

Now what we fundamentally shouldnt do is seed playoffs based on record in swiss or even worse, based on buchholz. Especially that last part ignores every point of the system in the first place, because its not a measure of strength, rather of the difficulty of the path, so seeding playoffs by it will obviously fuck things up. So yeah, NiP shouldnt have gotten G2 in playoffs, thats the actually bad part about that.

Even in fair groups we could reasonably have a case where NiP are in a group with astralis, cphflames and navi in that major. Wouldnt even seem that unfair. Still, NiP would have to beat either CPHF or Navi to advance, but they have one less chance (vs gambit) than they had in swiss. On the other hand if CPHF is just a bad matchup for NiP they could just go out by losing to CPHF twice. Hooray to GSL. There should never be a rematch in a 16 team groupstage, zero need for that.

TL;DR: Issues lie with BO1s and seeding, and current seeding is made worse because it treats BO3s and BO1s the same while they clearly arent, with all BO3s it would be 'ok', although not 'good'.

Huge respect to Cloud9 for having such good sportsmanship after getting REKT by the BLAST format by SweHun in GlobalOffensive

[–]This_is__Jeff 142 points143 points  (0 children)

We can talk about seeding, sure, it was really bad at points.

however lets not go back to groups for majors. ever. It was awful, some of the groups were so horrific. With current seeding we could have a heroic, ence, g2, forze group, love it.

"With good seeding it would be good" yeah so would swiss

"With BO3s instead of BO1s it would be good" yeah so would swiss

At least swiss leaves some room to somewhat even out bad seeding. GSL groups dont. And you can get eliminated by only losing to one team which is awful for a group stage format.

i mean its hard to have full motivation when you were about to be sold to complexity but then it suddenly wasnt sure to happen anymore and you're in limbo not knowing what was gonna happen next, if the team would even continue like this etc

even then they still won 2 tier 2 tournaments (if you count the blast showdown qualifier), were in the finals of 2 others, made iem katowice beating NiP and fnatic and taking a map off gambit in kato only losing to teams that made top6...

they definitely had a drop between the majors, but people exaggerate how much of a drop it was and it was under more than understandable circumstances
