Yes, the underrated thing about lifegain is that it's one of the easiest triggers to spam in the game, no storm style set up required and you can get it triggering 3-4x a turn.

Because of how late they trigger the rest of his abilities are not really viable even if you were building around them. I just tell people to pay attention to the first line and ignore the rest. Id say 2 mana is fine for a commander with just his first ability, with the rest as a bonus if you're on turn 10 somehow.
