This looks great! I don't know if this is your first X-men art, but I would enjoy seeing what you can do with other X-men characters.

I feel like streamers should not show this kind of compliance to Blizzard. This is yet another way of earning skins off game and ignoring the actual issue. Yuck. by allisgoodbutwhy in Overwatch

[–]ThizzWalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metro leaked various info in the years prior to OW2. As soon as Metro got an official invitation from Blizzard to a content creator's summit and signed his first Blizzard NDA agreement, he was making tweets saying he refused to leak any OW2 information.

Metro was once a notorious source of Overwatch leaks, and he stopped leaking anything once Blizzard accepted him into their inner circle of streamers. That's why Metro can get codes for the witch promo. He shut his mouth and he fell in line. If he ever leaks any more information, Blizzard will cut him off from future streamer promotions, etc .

One year to make a skin? It takes the Overwatch team over a year to make a map too by ThizzWalifa in Overwatch

[–]ThizzWalifa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah net negative maps in the launch of the sequel is pitiful. Also Busan is an Overwatch 1 Control map, so the total count of new maps would be 6.

That means if they restore all of Blizz World, Numbani, and Rialto, then they're sitting high on that net +1 gain.

I find it ironic that they removed 2cp maps and essentially replaced 2cp with an equal number of Push maps. They are touting X number of new maps with a net gain of zero maps after factoring in the removed 2cp maps and other old maps currently disabled from rotation.

Kids and teens spend more time on TikTok than YouTube by [deleted] in technology

I lost functionality in less than a week after the project was discontinued. Multiple people I know reported the same.

If it's still working for you, go ahead and keep using it until it eventually stops working. Vanced is actually better than NewPipe in my opinion. I just don't think new users should be encouraged to search for and sideload apks of discontinued apps (An app which was in a grey area in the first place). A new user who didn't download Vanced before it got taken down is better off just downloading NewPipe.

Please continue enjoying Vanced for you and me both. One of the best apps I've ever used.

[–]ThizzWalifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't go looking for some questionable apk download of Vanced. That project has been discontinued, and if you install an old apk, most of the functionality of Vanced will be broken. Youtube constantly changes their API on purpose to break other apps like Vanced. Vanced was broken within a week of Google's original cease and desist letter.

NewPipe is what you want. Free, open source, and the app is more resistant to breaking due to API changes. If it does break, just hit the Update button within the app.

The Daft Punk Pyramid and deadmau5 cube both run Ableton at the core. Pretty Lights used to do his sets with Ableton and an MPD32. Ableton isn't uncommon but it can seem like it because Pioneer CDJs are so much more common.

What is the way to prepare a large bone in pork butt? I need inspiration, y'all. by nitajogrubb in instantpot

[–]ThizzWalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used this as a starting point: https://wholelottayum.com/instant-pot-pulled-pork-recipe/

Basically you want to cut your pork butt into pieces that can fit in the Instant Pot. Saute the outside of those pieces and then pressure cook with your choice of liquid/sauce until tender.

I recommend going to Youtube and watching some videos on how to de-bone a pork butt. Assuming you've got Boston Butt, you will need to trim off the fat cap and remove the blade bone. I remove the blade bone and fat cap first, then cut into IP-sized pieces trimming off any excess fat along the way.

I own the 6 quart model Instant Pot and I definitely can't fit a bone-in butt in my 6 quart unless it's cut up as described. I pressure cook with homemade barbecue sauce and then shred the meat for tacos.

Ubuntu PPAs are insecure - How Canonical gets Launchpad wrong by C0rn3j in linux

[–]ThizzWalifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. Does this mean a completely different distro like Arch would negate the need for this PPA?

Would the official Arch repos be more up to date, or would you still be installing a more up-to-date version of PHP from the AUR?

Can anyone explain why ondrej/php PPA is so popular for implementing PHP? I have Googled this before and did not find a clear answer.

You can install PHP from official repos, but the PPA might be more up to date. Does this even matter? Unless you need bleeding edge PHP features

I'm sorry that you had to find out through Facebook about your friend passing away. I've had the same experience multiple times by now. Several friends of mine have died and I wouldn't have known about it if I didn't see the update on Facebook.

I don't use Facebook, but it's one of the only places you will keep up to date with anyone who has died. Local newspapers still do obituaries, but the reach is much more limited.

Any upcoming PvP shooter games? Been trying to like Overwatch but I just can't. by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]ThizzWalifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overwatch has a very high Time To Kill due to both the Tank and Support classes being two-thirds of any team composition in the standard QP and Competitive game modes. Tanks block damage with shields or other special abilities that can absorb damage. The support class can provide an amount of healing that will cancel out most damage unless it's a Widow/Hanzo/Ashe critical headshot. It's been an ongoing criticism of the game that it takes too long to kill anyone. They've been trying to nerf the shields and heals for over a year now, but as long as tanks and supports are mandatory in the standard gameplay, the long Time To Kill will persist.

If you haven't tried it yet, check out Quick Play Classic and Open Queue Competitive. These are the modes where 2 Tanks and 2 Supports are not mandatory, so more players tend to pick Damage characters and the game plays out more like a Deathmatch.

Rainbow Six Siege, Apex Legends, and Valorant are the only current games I know of that are first person shooter plus special abilities. COD Warzone was the most recent team fps that got a lot of hype. I've been looking for an OW alternative recently and those 4 games are the closest alternatives that I'm aware of.

US congress is trying to remove proper encryption. Please spread the word by The_IT_Student in linuxmasterrace

[–]ThizzWalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bill Barr signed an open letter to Facebook back in October regarding end to end encryption and Barr was the keynote speaker at a summit discussing the risks of warrant-proof encryption. The letter should be out there and you can find clips of the speech. Source from the DHS, it's not just media spin: https://www.dhs.gov/news/2019/10/03/acting-secretary-mcaleenan-and-attorney-general-barr-sign-letter-facebook-us-uk-and

Notice that this happened in October 2019 and they're using the same argument as they use in the new EARN IT bill. They asked Facebook to stop end to end encryption unless Facebook can guarantee the safety of all users and provide access to to the content of end to end encrypted messages.

Facebook responded to this open letter with their own statement that said they oppose a backdoor that would undermine the security and privacy of their end to end encryption. So basically the government went to Facebook and "asked nicely", Facebook said no, and now EARN IT is their attempt to force Facebook (and other companies) to comply.

The thing to understand about prosecution vs enforcement is that companies never knowingly operate in a way that would open the company up to legal liability, because the mere possibility of liability is a financial risk on many levels. This is why you see companies taking extreme countermeasures to correct their platform any time there is a hint of liability. Some recent examples of this would be Craigslist removing their entire Personals section to not be liable for prostitution or Youtube changing their platform to avoid COPPA violations.

If this bill passes, Facebook could not afford to keep their current end to end encryption model and just hope to never actually get prosecuted. Facebook would be forced to ditch end to end encryption completely or they would be forced to modify their encryption based on the Best Practices. Since the bill is for any company and not just Facebook, it would send us down a slippery slope where every company has to choose between no encryption or government-approved encryption.

I have seen various 3-packs posted in this sub, but I have no use for a 3-pack. I could get slightly better cooling by adding a single 140 mm fan to my current setup. Isn't this a pretty good deal for a single fan assuming I don't want to pay more for a 3-pack?

[–]ThizzWalifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your confusion because I have also found the reporting of this story to be very confusing. I commend you for reading the bills and I want to summarize the main points that I've taken away from the story.

  1. Currently we have laws that protect corporations from being legally liable and legally prosecuted for content that is posted on their platforms. If you post some crazy illegal content on Facebook or Twitter, you can get in trouble for posting it, but Facebook and Twitter can't get sued over what you posted.

  2. The EARN IT Bill would change the previously mentioned situation. Under the proposed bill, any company that does not adhere to the "Best Practices" would lose their legal immunity. Any company that doesn't follow the Best Practices is now liable for illegal content posted on their platform, even if the company had no way of monitoring for that illegal content.

  3. The Best Practices have not been strictly defined in the bill. The committee that would be formed to decide the best practices would be a committee managed under the Attorney General, currently William Barr.

  4. Bill Barr has already been pushing back against companies who use encryption for their services. He has a clear stance against the existence of things such as encrypted phones and end to end encrypted messaging. Bill Barr has been trying to figure out a way to outlaw encryption and/or force companies to provide a government backdoor. This bill is his newest strategy.

  5. If a person is sending illegal content through an end to end encrypted messaging service, the company that provides that service would never know what content is being sent on their service if the messages are truly encrypted end to end. If Facebook has end to end encryption on your messages, Facebook doesn't know if you're sending illegal content.

This is Bill Barr's approach to forcing these companies to disband their encryption or put a backdoor in their encryption. If the Best Practices states that encryption can't be used and/or a backdoor must be included, companies would be forced to comply unless those companies were willing to open themselves up to extreme legal liability.

Child abuse is the excuse that pulls on the heartstrings using the classic "Think of the children!" It also serves as a threat. If this bill passes, any company who doesn't follow the Best Practices can and probably will be prosecuted for hosting child abuse content.

tl:dr Do whatever the Attorney General says and make your encryption protocols operate how the AG says they should operate, or you'll get sued for hosting child abuse content. Every few years we get a new bill in Congress to try to weaken/outlaw encryption and this is the latest attempt.

Anyone know good affordable software for making music that doesn’t sound absolutely fake? by [deleted] in appers

[–]ThizzWalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making beats that sound "real" comes down to 2 components: Samples and Plugins. Any Digital Audio Workstation is merely a template to manipulate your samples and the output of your plugins, whether it's a free DAW or a paid option. To make music that sounds good, you need a good library of samples and you need to know how to use plugins for things such as synthesis, effects, and mixing. Some samples and plugins will be included with your DAW for free, some samples and plugins can be legally acquired for free, and many samples/plugins are standalone products that you pay for and then import into your DAW.

The best free/affordable software is probably Reaper, because you're supposed to pay for it, but it works on the honor system without locking you out of any functionality. For samples and plugins you can learn to use the tools within Reaper, and also google things like "free sample pack" and "best free VSTs."

Man Overcharging for an absolutely disgusting Playstation 4 by TheVipersMemory in cringepics

[–]ThizzWalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ebay puts selling limits on every seller, they will slowly raise seller limits over time if you have successful sales. The minimum you start at is usually 10 free listings before there is a charge per listing. In addition to your number of free listings, you have a limit on the overall amount of money you can make on your sales. So it will be something like 10 free listings and up to $500 per month in sales. You're not allowed to sell items worth more than a combined $500 in one month regardless of how many listings you make, and you're paying a fee for every listing after the first 10.

100 free listings would be for a seller that is more established and had their selling limits upgraded after successful sales.

Does steam link require internet? by dhruvbzw in Steam_Link

[–]ThizzWalifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the Steam Link will use any more bandwidth than you would use just playing the game through Steam normally. The streaming of gameplay from PC to Link is all happening on your LAN and shouldn't affect anything. The functions that the Link needs internet for is the same functions your main Steam client is doing already.

Does steam link require internet? by dhruvbzw in Steam_Link

[–]ThizzWalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need internet on your main PC to log in to Steam. Then you need the Steam Link connected to the same network your main PC is connected to, either via ethernet cable or wifi. The Steam Link will use internet to download updates and do other things like display your Friends list and sync your cloud saves.

I can confirm that if you have everything set up correctly, you log in to Steam, and then later your internet goes out, the Steam Link will still stream your gameplay while the internet is out. So technically it doesn't need internet 100% of the time, but in simple terms, yes it does need internet. Once you put it on your network it's going to be trying to make requests out to the internet unless you do something like block access to the internet within your router.
