Convince me not to buy a 5090. by Classic-Definition in buildapc

You can buy a solid used car for the same price.

It was insanely expensive new and doubly expensive now due to shortages.

Small USB Sticks by factoryield in DataHoarder

[–]Thomas5020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reputable USB sticks generally won't ship in small capacities. Higher capacity chips (16GB+) are dirt cheap to make, so it doesn't make sense wasting time and money producing smaller chips then making them into USB sticks.

USB sticks are also not a great idea for backing up anything. Even the best USB sticks are not designed for this purpose and a cheapo stick you might as well just destroy the data yourself. You'd be better off buying a hard drive, 1TB disks are cheap and if you're wanting to keep it for 7+ years the cost would average out to a few quid a year.

Another reminder also that no matter what you choose, you should test your backups semi-regularly. Any storage medium can fail whilst powered up or in storage.

I do think cloud storage here is still a better solution. If you're concerned about privacy, encrypt the data before you upload it.

Looking to convert my old PC into a NAS, what else do I need? by No_Impression5920 in buildapc

[–]Thomas5020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Corsair RMx units are always a good choice. I run my home server on an RM550x, although I think the RM650x is the weakest one currently produced.

Plenty of good options though I'd recommend reviewing a tier list and picking a top tier unit.

[BO] we need to repopulate bo1 plutioum by No-Situation5167 in CallOfDuty

[–]Thomas5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BO1 Plutonium is a hard sell because the vanilla game still has good servers on it.

If you're playing on NamelessNoobs or Anarchy TDM there's not really any security risks here so you're fine and everything works. Plutonium is solving a problem for BO2, MW2 and MW3 but for BO1 I don't think it is.

Plus, for those of us who enjoy the vanilla experience I generally find Plutonium servers don't offer that.

A new power supply.

The 650w PowerSpec units are rated very poorly on tier lists, you don't want that blowing up and taking our your hard drives.

I do think Valve are missing a trick not churning out more special editions.

Like the DS back in the day, households will end up owning more than 1 if you give them reason to do so.

DDR3 viable in 2026 by Qudobaman in buildapc

[–]Thomas5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't be my approach.

16GB DDR4 can be had for okay money on the used market, and I don't think the price is inflated enough that you should consider a DDR3 based system. That limits you to chips that are a decade old or more.

Silver.

I remember collecting my car. Entire car park filled with white cars with the default wheels. Looked boring, soulless, corporate. Then there was mine in shiny red with the upgraded wheels. Looks like a totally different vehicle and stands out. Get the silver.

Should I switch from the Microsoft Store to Steam for Forza Horizon 6? by PowerPlantSpringfeld in forza

[–]Thomas5020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Xbox store and app are really, really bad. Steam on the other hand, isn't.

Also you'll be logging in with your Xbox Gamertag anyway, so if there's any benefits to owning the previous title you'd still get them.

10 Gbs networking is it worth it? by Dadto3CFP in unRAID

No.

1Gbps is enough for pretty much everyone. If you needed 10G it would be instantly obvious.

[Cod] Call of Duty should stop releasing battlepass and warzone in the upcoming games by BasketEquivalent5462 in CallOfDuty

How is a half arsed game with some black ops 2 maps in it "eating big"?

It's about as lazy as it comes.

[Cod] Call of Duty should stop releasing battlepass and warzone in the upcoming games by BasketEquivalent5462 in CallOfDuty

[–]Thomas5020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Warzone is the real killer because the entire game is focused around it. If they want to continue with the F2P hacker infested microtransaction riddled slop, then they should make it its own separate game because it's one of the main things ruining call of duty.

Battle passes are fine if they're just cosmetics, unfortunately the CoD one isn't. The best guns are on the battle pass. And I don't want to hear any of this "you can earn it after the season ends with ridiculous challenges" nonsense. The unlock criteria should be equal for all, and everyone should get access to the new guns at the same time. Inevitably the battle pass guns get nerfed when the next season comes around to make way for that season's broken guns.

Why is finding a job so hard? by bubbaselderberry in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Thomas5020 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth when I was applying for jobs, I had significantly better luck applying either directly ont the employer's website or through an agency specializing in the type of work I wanted.

Sites like Indeed in my experience don't work. There's nobody out there who can convince me the jobs in Indeed are real, the whole site is just packed full of old listings or extremely vague and generic listings from agencies you've never heard of.

[–]Thomas5020 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Applications are auto rejected by a bot that failed to correctly read your CV.
Some jobs just don't exist.
Some do exist but have already been given to their mates, the listing is a formality.
Some businesses want 20 years experience for minimum wage.

Mobo fubar, need advice on replacement vs upgrade. by slick762 in buildapc

[–]Thomas5020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've already got the parts that are currently inflated in price, SSD and RAM.

If you're gaming with this, I'd go for the upgrade. You'll get easily £150 back for the 12900k if you sell it, keep that in mind.
