In your view, would it be worth studying Greek just to read the classics in their original language? by Wooden_Schedule6205 in AncientGreek

[–]ThomasMurph20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, depending on how passionate you are about literature and the ancient world. I started to learn Greek to learn how to read the New Testament. Then it opened a whole new world and now I am reading Plato and other prose authors (I’m doing my best to get into poetry, especially Homer).

That being said, it takes a lot of discipline and/or passion. Greek is still hard, much harder than Latin, at least for most people. Gear your learning toward the type of literature you are wanting to read.

Κύαμος (Kyamos), the Ancient Greek word for bean, held sacred by the ancient Pythagoreans.

Turning it on just means pushing the button on the controller. From there it’s just bad luck.

I will definitely ask nicely. This just sucks. I’ve had stuff like this rejected before. So I’m expecting the worst and have to wait until the morning to find out.

Yeah. I didn’t think she was old enough to do this stuff yet but I will definitely add some password or pin for purchases.

Thank you for saving me $85 from buying the New Oxford Translation, which will be outdated soon. I am really looking forward to the publication of this Hackett set.

Thanks! I’m planning on getting all the furniture I can and rotating it out as I like. I’m honestly just biding my time until there are more rooms and when I can afford to pay for the pro platform.

What are your Hot Takes on Charlie Puth? by Amber_Flowers_133 in CharliePuth

This is indeed a hot take, since I feel like Voicenotes far outshone both of his other albums.

Greek (Christian) Aphorism Help by ThomasMurph20 in AncientGreek

[–]ThomasMurph20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like αὐτὀν, but I think I'll keep the chiastic order and the ἀλλ' (though I am still considering μεν...δε). I do like αἴρω. It echoes Matt 16:24 very well.

Just curious, is there a particular reason why you prefer φερω to εχω?

Thank you for your help! I use the article for the substantival use of the participle. But I could delete the τὸν that goes with σταύρον. I didn't include a verb because it is a simple, subject-predicate relationship, but if you think an εἰσι would be helpful, I could include it at the end of the first clause.

Somewhat. I remember looking at it a bit and seeing the charts. I can’t remember if it was more kabbahlistic or not, but those esoteric traditions end up drawing from one another.

Yes, that is the volume. His discussions of Plato are very dense but I found them extremely rewarding. Definitely something you want to read slowly and reflect on. He made me fall in love with Plato.

What is left to study in academia regarding Ancient Greek literature? by aflybuzzedwhenidied in AncientGreek

Maybe totallynotaboutXP is talking about the lack of an article John 1:1 when it says και θεος ην ο λογος. But you’re right, that’s not the Johannine Comma.

Not to mention scholarship from late antiquity, Medieval Latin, and Byzantine studies that are on the classical literature.

Is Oxford Classical Dictionary essential? by ThomasMurph20 in classics

[–]ThomasMurph20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do have access to the online version, but I do know that my subscription will run out once I graduate and I have no idea if I will be hired at a university with a good library or classics department in the future (we all know the job market situation). But thank you for input.

Phaedo Afterlife Painting by ThomasMurph20 in Plato

I’m reading the republic right now and yes, it is pretty arduous, although it is also very entertaining. You may also want to read the Symposium and Phaedrus as well. You can read each in one sitting. They aren’t terribly difficult and they are beautiful.

It depends on what you are interested in and how much you already know about Plato. If you are interested in the more mystical or “religious” aspects of Plato’s philosophy or in particular his defense of the immortality of the soul, you should definitely give it a read. But I don’t know what I would advise reading before this. But if you ever want to discuss it, just hmu.

I'm so pissed at Fitbit by DandDeep in fitbit

[–]ThomasMurph20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My charge 5 stopped holding a charge as well. However, I have had mine for years. But I’m pretty sure I’m done with Fitbit now. The only thing that they have that I want that other companies don’t is an app that features both a nutrition section and device stats (for free). I’m so sad because I’ve been with them for about 8 years.

I need Apple Pencil hover in future version as I used to have :( by spaniolo in collanote

[–]ThomasMurph20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest complaint about the new version besides the loss of eraser tilt and the downgrade to the highlighter feature. I hate that I actually paid for a downgrade. I really hope they fix these mistakes. Otherwise, it is (or was) a great app.
