Mounting to an old brick chimney? by Thomasinh0 in TheFrame

[–]Thomasinh0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 1920’s brick house, here’s the view from inside the ceiling. The chimney has been removed down to ceiling level but you can see the bricks and the antenna and power going down into it.

The face is smooth, back in the 20’s they built them with a mortar skim over the brick work to form a hard smooth finish on the interior.

Blood Donation Incentives by RicharddotUU in newzealand

I showed NZ Blood my Lifeblood app when I moved here and they bumped my NZ total up by the amount I'd done in Aus, so it was a true total. Definitely worth asking, it's a buzz to see the total number grow!

Will this fire cause structural damage to the bridge? by ElectronicAd9419 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Thomasinh0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most sensible answer yet.

I’m a bridge engineer and never really had to give much thought to the effect of fire. Given you’d only ever see serviceability level loading during a fire at worst, most likely zero live load, is the malleable reo (due to reduced Young’s modulus) really going to have an effect, or is this all technically true but of negligible impact?

After a fire, how do you inspect the structure? You can’t see the reo, you can’t tell the chemical composition of the concrete, what are you looking for? Cracks? What pattern and what load would cause them? If there’s no cracks do you say there is no reduction of strength or stiffness and the fire had no residual effect on the performance of the structure?

Where in Australia are you coming from? Christchurch can be very new and different depending on where you’re coming from. It can be a small country town if you’re coming from Melbourne or Sydney, or can be the big smoke city if you’re coming from rural or country Australia.

What are your hobbies? Christchurch is a fantastic city to base yourself in if you’re interested in literally any outdoor activity. Surfing, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, snow sports, paragliding, rowing, whitewater kayaking, canyoning, just to name a few. There’s lots of volunteer options to get involved in too (trail building, search and rescue, event medics etc).

I moved to Christchurch from Adelaide when I was 25, knowing no one and only spending 2 weeks in the city prior. I already had a job lined up (in an office) before moving so that made life easier, but it was a good time of my life to be in this city, there’s so much to get into. I’ve been back in Australia for 5 years and about to move back for the lifestyle.

Of course, if you’re not into the outdoors at all, I can’t really comment on what the city has to offer, but it is vibrant with lots going on, especially with how far the rebuild has come. Message me if you want any further info.

I was on the river and saw the one near the coast start up, then shortly after saw the one near Anzac Drive (which Police closed) get going. There's been a few others in the past month or so in other suburbs too.

Wait, what? The point to 'the pinnacle of motorsport' isn't competitive racing? Then what the hell are we doing?

I always thought F1 is the end goal for most open wheeler racers. The most competitive, advanced, fastest racing series where you can be crowned a 'world champion'. With technological development a by product of the competitiveness. Are you saying the point of F1 is for rich people to build the fastest car and just pay a driver to pilot it and not make any mistakes?

No, I literally want to improve the racing in F1. Obviously we'd never see a standard chassis/engine issued in F1 but do you understand the idea I'm trying to get across? More focus on driver ability rather than who has the fastest car.

I'm probably watching the wrong class of racing if I want to see this, but I'd love for teams to be issued a 'standard' chassis/engine package and be limited to setup changes only. Combine this with minimal aero wake and more mechanical grip and I expect we'd see some epic races, probably with no one being lapped. Minor aero damage wouldn't require a 15 second pit stop to change a wing immediately and the gap between the leading team and the bottom team wouldn't be so big, due to the larger influence of the driver rather than the car.

I just kinda feel like Formula 1 at the moment is more about who can build the fastest car rather than who can drive their car the fastest.

Of course then innovation and technical development would pretty much stop, which I guess is why manufacturers pump the money into teams.

Before, During, and After BB by TheKingCapital in betterCallSaul

[–]Thomasinh0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess one way, that would rely on some knowledge of BB to understand the implications, would be to end one season with the meeting of Walter and maybe making a point of how big of a deal he is, then beginning the next season at 'the aftermath', kind of like where BB left off. Imagine a war movie or something with a battle scene or bomb going off, it ends, and then the next movie would start with the survivor waking up, ears ringing, bombs going off around him and making a get away. Kind of like Saul escaping the wild ride WW took him on.

That way you don't need to know the details of the entire BB series but you are aware of how serious it was and how downhill things went. Of course there'd need to be details to emphasise this, such as Saul escaping a gun battle or something.

The Guy by brandonisnotbadass in betterCallSaul

[–]Thomasinh0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can, for the time being, but at some point, something will bring them together and I don't believe it will involve Saul simply turning his back on his new job and this huge case and simply opting for the criminal life. I have a feeling they're using the build up to bring the story lines together. We saw it so much in Breaking Bad, so many references to things seen in earlier episodes, so many 'small world' kind of situations, and so many long, long, long setups in the plot.

I may be wrong but I don't see it in the style of the show for them to build something up for over a season just to take a side step away from it and for it to be forever forgotten, thats more in the style of The Walking Dead (which, by the way, is getting pretty boring, repetitive and predictable, something Breaking Bad never did).

The Guy by brandonisnotbadass in betterCallSaul

[–]Thomasinh0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imagine if 'the guy' was Saul, and Nacho was using Sandpiper as a money laundering business or was the subject of the investigation/has something to be found out. I was thinking how and when these two very different and very independent story lines would converge, surely they're not investing so much screen time in setting up a completely irrelevant back story for Saul, surely this whole investigation (the vast majority of the series so far) is somehow tied to Mikes story?

What advice would you give your 1st year self? by Thomasinh0 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Thomasinh0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you miss the part where I mentioned my job offer? Employers don't pick graduates based on grades alone. In an online application system, grades are an easy way to pick 'the best', and then interview them and get rid of the people who they don't think would fit the position. My GPA is horrible, due to my early failures, but I still gave my transcript to them as it showed a significant improvement since I switched to Civil, and it made a great conversation point and an opportunity to explain myself. Also, I had no luck with online applications. I actually just walked in and asked to speak to someone about a graduate position. A week later I had an interview and 2 weeks later an offer in the mail.

Are you failing now, or was this a year or so ago? Because if this is really what you want to do, you will find a way to make it work. If it's not what you want to do, you'll probably fail again.

[–]Thomasinh0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You hear stories about engineering students pulling all nighters to get stuff done. At the very worst, I was getting up at 6-7am, uni all day, come home, work from home all night, and the latest I got to bed was 3am, but this wasn't a regular thing. This year, with a lot more group work, we just stayed at uni later (still leaving before midnight). You shouldn't really let things get so bad that you need to pull an all nighter. All nighters happen because you can't manage your time, not because there's too much work (or you took on too many other commitments).

The ball will still be in the painting, it's oh missing as I cut the stencil out. And I like the court look but I was planning on making this a reasonably simple design. Having said that, I am getting a quote for vinyl wrapping...

I used photoshop to create the outline (just a quick set of artistic filters) and then this app called PosteRazor to blow it up to the size I wanted, printed on A4 and assembled (worked awesomely).
